Wow. Patriots are having it rough.
Belichick is gonna rip them a new one, this week.

Re: General Boston Sports Thread
Same things I said earlier in the JG discussion. Not a Pats fan nor a Lions fan. The defense lacks speed. Brady lacks weapons. Also, probably an unpopular opinion around here, but I think the reason they wanted to trade Gronk is because this is the beginning of his decline. He's still going to pop off a few times and having a deep threat would help him immensely. But he moves laterally like a 40 year old tight end. The injuries are starting to catch up to him imo. He still has a few seasons left in him if there is a credible deep threat, but there's only a year or two left for him being an elite tight end. Also, there were a few passes Brady underthrew. He's 40 and is the most accomplished QB playing the game. He's still elite, but he can no longer lift scrubs above their value. He needs weapons.

Why him?
Brady has almost no weapons and defense was missing three key starters.
This seems worse than their normal September struggles, but really, reinforcements are coming soon, and the team has done this like 17 years in a row.

It's not just the long passing game killing Gronk, it's the lack of the short passing game too. Edelman is basically their #1 RB. Teams can double Gronk without consequence right now. Whatever else happens, that'll change.

Re: General Boston Sports Thread
I still have faith the Pats can get it together later on. They look BAD lately, but the only real AFC contender that looks decent in 3 games is probably the Chiefs.
This game was eerily similar to that game maybe in 2010 or 2011 when the Mangini led Browns demolished the Patriots. Sometimes these ex Pats coaches can get their revenge too.
I think the only reason people feel nervous at times is Brady is over 40 and nobody wants to see him get his time wasted after blowing a SB defensively to Nick freaking Foles.

Throwing Brady to the Wolves with 3 WR3s is Belichick's fault. Having an unatheltic defense that can't tackle in open space or stop first down conversions on numerous 3rd and longs is a Belichick problem.
I'm not particularly optimistic in hoping for a 32 year old WR recovering from a torn ACL or a dude who's one failed drug test away from permanent suspension.

Re: General Boston Sports Thread
I was expecting Cordarelle Patterson to play a much bigger role in our offense. He has size and playmaking ability and in the preseason it sounded like he was picking up the offense and developing a rhythm with Brady. I thought he was next in line behind Troy Brown, Welker, Edelman, etc. I drafted him in all my fantasy leagues and he has made me look kinda bad.
That said, between Gronk, Hollister, Dorsett, James White etc - we have sufficient weapons. Saying otherwise is a cop out.

Because he is responsible for roster construction. Pats lack talent on both sides of the ball

I'm really not all that concerned about the offense, but the construction of the defense is pretty flawed IMO. I'm a borderline homer about the Patriots, and I told people last night that dismissing this team would be foolish.
That said, the lack of speed on defense is a serious issue, and outside of Flowers, Gilmore, and hopefully Wise they don't really have any big impact defenders. This is one of those years where i think they have to go out and trade for a good defensive player, like when they dealt for Talib. There are too many people overreacting today, but it's pretty ugly right now.

Not saying Belichick is beyond reproach, but worth noting that the people who have questioned him are like 0 for 10,000 at this point. Not even hyperbole. We do this every September, and his haters eat humungous buckets of **** each and every time.

No, they absolutely do not. Just not factual whatsoever. Tons of high picks on the defensive side, plus GOATs at QB, and possibly TE. With a top 10 WR and a 1st round RB, and a top 5 o-line. They have made the Super Bowl 3 of the last 4 years and nearly all 4 of them. Usually after starting slow due to how complicated their schemes are. They got poached hard this offseason because salary cap era, but every one of those guys they let go was a good decision (Butler, Solder, Amendola, Lewis).

Since forever ago, they have built for the red zone and situational football, over playing to win between the 20s.
Pretty sure that is working out better than anything ever has for anyone else in the history of the sport.
Not sure they will turn it around to elite level this year, but it is incredible and unprecedented that it would even take this long just to fall off to wild card status.

Oh, I think the decline will be more rapid than that. Edelman will help a little, but Brady's age is clearly showing. On top of that, the Lions absolutely gashed the Patriots' front seven, which was a step or two slow to the ball all night.

You have a top QB and TE for sure, after that it falls off a cliff. Same for your defense, after McCourty and Gilmore, the talent falls off a cliff severely. This is the most shallow patriots roster I’ve seen in a long time

They aren't AS stacked as they were last year, but I think some Pats fans are just spoiled. For starters, pure folly to judge any Pats team before Week 6 or so, as proven countless times over nearly an entire generation.
On defense, the secondary is probably top 5. Three of their four starters in the secondary are top notch, plus some solid subs and young CB prospects. LB corps is solid as well. DL getting pushed around, but not for a lack of "talent", per se. Trey Flowers is a fantastic player. Brown and Shelton are hardly lacking talent. Wise is playing very well.
Special teams elite, as always.
Offense, GOAT QB, possible GOAT TE, top 5 o-line, better RB talent than we have had in forever, WR corps was like the deepest position on the team until like a minute ago.
In sum, sure, lacking some depth right now, but also injured, and also early in the season. Not untalented by any stretch.

Not a Pats fan, a giants fan, but I don’t hate the pats and watch them because I am in New England.
One thing I think is finally coming to haunt them is they get a little too arrogant in their talent acquisition.
They look like toast the last two weeks

I didn't blame Belichick for Edelman getting suspended? And even if Chung and Flowers played, we probably would've still lost to the Lions.
And in terms of questioning Belichick, the defense was questioned last year and we lost the super bowl because of the **** defense. I guess we are 1 for 10,000 then. And I get it, holding Belichick to super bowl or bust might be unfair, but if we crown him as the GOAT coach, these are the expectations.
In the end, he hasn't been drafting well over the last few years and anyone who can't see that just doesn't want to see it.

It's true that Brady lacks weapons at the moment, but Brady himself does not look sharp. They need to draft the next Garoppolo.
