Basketball is a contact sport. It's not as violent as football or hockey, but there has always been contact. It's always been a defensive tactic to grab and hold great off ball players to slow them down a little. You see it at every level from grade school to the pros. A little grabbing and holding is allowed. These guys aren't mugged. Go watch prime Shaq in the post to see a mugging. He was mugged plenty. The league just wants to give offensive players an even bigger advantage especially when coupled with illegal screens.

Even if you want to classify it as a 'contact sport' (as if that means anything, it's an ambiguous term more than anything), does it justify players mugging and pulling other players off-ball when they've been beat? That's not basketball, and to pretend otherwise is odd.

They aren't mugged. That's extreme. They are grabbed and held. A little grabbing and holding has always been allowed. It is a tactic to slow them down a little bit while they run you through screen after screen after screen. You see it at every level. Players grab and hold all the time. You just can't get caught with arms extended and a hand full of jersey.

And I'm sure if it's "just a little grabbing" then this change won't mean anything at all.

The real comparison is style of play. If you run around on the perimeter, this rule will apply. If you play in the post, it won't. Especially if you are big.

Guaranteed this rule gets called differently depending on the size of the guy getting held, and also relative to the size of the guy doing the holding.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

As is for every single rule already in the rule book.

Just one more step to the one dimensional league. And a pretty big one, too.

You're right, we should definitely allow plays to get mugged, hand-checked and clotheslined. That's REAL basketball.

I actually agree with you. Holding sucks. Hand checking isn't so bad. Hard fouls that aim to do more than prevent a shot aren't basketball.

I just want it called evenly. The big picture here is dynamic fast moving guards (who travel to catch the ball and gather, who can't be touched, or even invaded) and slow plodding bigs (who get mugged far worse, get whistled for the slightest foot shuffle, and now get fewer second per offensive rebound :D ). It all adds up to a much different game. And I think it's a much worse game, the further we go from balance.

I’m so tired of people making comments like this. Basketball is a contact sport dude. Do you want them to remove touching period?

If someone is quicker than you but you’re stronger, why can’t you use your advantage the same way that he is trying to use his?

Basketball when made was a non contact sport. Intentionally impeding someone is against the essence of the game. Contact in the post, rebounding, blocking is different then holding someone just cause you can do it. Its like saying if a power-lifter can stop a sprinter in a sprint by holding him cause he can. Thats plain wrong.

Its not ice-hockey

The issue arises from the fact that the constant moving screens from players like Draymond, Lee, Bogut, Zaza, etc, over the years is a big reason WHY they get grabbed. It's impossible to play defense when this is happening all throughout the game.

Not to mention when Klay and Steph consistently do this before they run their route to get open.

So yes, it's a little annoying that one rule is getting heavily enforced while the league turns a blind eye to the others.

Illegal screens, push-offs by players are all fouls, atleast they were when i was learning the game. Just because referees are not calling them doesnt mean you allow stronger players to hold faster players. Thats just doesn't make sense.

Haha traction on the NFL? Not in the US. NFL earns about 3 times more revenue than the NBA with way less games and its just really popular in the US.

NFL is just built better because of competition and balance in the league(due to a hard cap and no max contracts)

That's true. But why the focus on only one side of things?

NBA won't stop until every game has scores like the All Star game.

Seriously though, the league doesn't want players to play defense.

Almost every rule added since the 90s is to favor the offensive side of the ball.

And only the small version of offense.

Bigs get it worse and worse on both sides.

Lmao. Basketball isn’t a contact sport?

Dude I’m not even gonna dignify that with a response. Just silly, similar to most of your posts.

The Warriors have probably gotten away with the most off-ball fouls, defensively & offensively, in the entire league over the past couple years. Especially with these small ball lineups they would throw out there.

Again, depends on your definition of 'contact sport'. If contact sport means that defenders should be allowed to mug, pull and hold off-ball players, then no, that isn't basketball. You can find any goon off the street to do that for you.

I’m just saying, it seems like every year they create another rule to curtail defenses.

Then they allow offenses to get away with blatant moving screens, travels, carrying, double-dribbles, 3/4 step gathers, hooking, jumping into defenders to draw fouls, grabbing arms around screens (Harden/Lou Will move), rip thru moves (the defender has his hands STATIONARY & the offense SWINGS his arms into the defender), not allowing off-ball fouls on bad FT shooters, etc...

You’re not allowed to play defense UNLESS you’re guarding a big man, in which case, you’re allowed to maul them around the basket.
