But if you use the top of your pen a lot (Hader, Jeffress, etc) that means you've been winning the majority of those first 5 games.

If we get down 5-1 tomorrow, Guerra is coming in to mop up for 5 innings.

The only way it goes south is if you use Hader, Knebel, etc. in tie games or they choke away a lead. Then you're tied or losing the series AND you've tired out your bullpen. At that point you just tip your cap.

Cant believe we're still only in the 5th inning.

if the Packers were playing tonight, Jimmy Graham and MVS would have 3 TDs each and the Pack would be up by 50.

You can't shy away from your strengths out of fear of distance. You have to use your strengths. Our strength IS the bullpen. Our SP is touch and go. But, I would propose we really don't have a weakness in that pen. We have 3 long guys if you need who have all performed admirably over the course of the last couple months - Guerra, Woody, and Peralta. Then, you have lights out stuff from four guys - Hader, Soria, Knebel, and Jeffress. Then you have real solid stuff in Burnes who may just becoming dominant. Toss in a situational lefty in Cedeno to eat an out here and there when arms aren't available. Gio is an extension of the bullpen right now. He's essentially in the Guerra/Woody/Peralta group. Chacin is your hopeful 4-5 inning guy. You maybe get that from Miley. BUT you have 3 other guys to spot fill. It's a beautiful thing right now.

If our pen is gassed by then we'll have been in a position to win the majority of the games and if we haven't closed out the series then the Dodgers probably will deserve to win. I'm not worried about that aspect at all.

Might have an interesting decision coming with Hader here depending on what Arcia does.

Smoltz also hates the idea of heavy bullpen use so he's a little biased.

Long way to go. I'm still nervous
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

We could be up 12-1 with a 3-0 series lead and my mind would be convincing itself that there's a path for the Dodgers to come back.

Eh, Arcia has already done his job so far for the game. Asking him to get anther RBI would be asking him too much.

It's not even so much that they're gassed but if you see the same pitchers 3-4-5 times in a week you're going to have a much better chance of success against them.

Yeah, it's not a perfect choice. You have downsides of burning your pen for extra innings or having what you say be an issue...but I guess the logic is you throw the most innings with your best pitchers with the best matchups and hope the rest of the chips fall into place.

I don't see how this is avoidable in a best of 7 series for any team. You're going to see the same guys multiple times.

I swear Pina gets absolutely bludgeoned by balls or bats at least twice each game. What a warrior.
