Re: 2018 Postseason Thread
again, good location for that last fastball. good job managing the damage. now let's go. the HR kid has been sitting for awhile, and while his arm is colder, his heart must be pumping at 100 mph. aim for location mistakes on his fastballs early, but don't deviate from the pre-selected zone until 2 strikes.

The Big Game Pitcher ship has sailed.
The Bums, Schillings, Becketts, and Lesters are a different breed. None of them have EVER been the best pitcher in baseball. They just have IT in October.

if so, then do you want him back at the price tag he comes at?
We’ve curbed his level of influence on our team to where his choking doesn’t bother me as much.
I believe the team, like me, is kind of over the idea of making him into some big game pitcher. I don’t even think a showing like today will deflate the team....while specific starts like Game 6 2013 NLCS in St. Louis, Game 1 2014 NLDS against STL at home, Game 4 2014 NLDS in St. Louis, Game 6 2016 NLCS Cubs all seemed debilitating to him, the team, the fans, etc. etc. You could tell a big narrative around him and the team was getting him over his demons and it crushed us.
We expect this from him and we’ve sort of built around it.
I think overall, I don’t want him around because I think the choking in the locker room permeates to everyone....but if his level of influence stays down, he can stay. He has loyalists that will go kamikaze and never forgive the FO for letting him go even if we won 5 WSs in a row in his absence.

Grandal then lets the ball go by him, which is further compounded by Kershaw missing the backup. This battery is a joke right now.

I’m actually worried he wont opt out.
$90 mill until 2021 and ask LAD for an extension or opt out and ask for 7-8 years at something less than $30 Ms. I doubt anyone gives him 30 Ms. maybe 25 Ms.

he is in decline phase. the question is if he has done enough for us to have retirement contract from us or with his hometown team Texas Rangers. I say let him go home. he will have a hero's welcome and his declining skills will still be good enough to be their ace for the next few years, then become the mentor to younger guys as he age and collect free money.

Kershaw's Impending Free Agency
I want to retain Kershaw, but I agree with Quake's call for less of an influence on the team. Like Neddy said, he's in the decline phase so he's not worth a large commitment. However, our team is still built around starting pitching and we still need him until we have suitable replacements.

Agreed.
It’s time for LAD to have their time in the sun. We have been the little engine that could our entire existence. The surprise pitching and defense team that FINALLY shocked the Yankees/ did the improbable etc. etc.
We deserve a time of dominance. A back to back. A three peat.
Not dragging this guy to his FIRST ring with his bad postseason starts.

Tentative pitching and bad defense.

that's exactly it. we are built on starting pitchers, and we have a ton of them as is. I say Kershaw can easily command another 170 million or whatever in the open market, but we can sign Ryu for say, 40 mil for 3 years? that's easily a mid-tear offer that is cheaper than what costed us Brandon McCarthy or Scott Kazmir. he can be the elder statesman at the top of the rotation, then followed by
Walker - Urias - Wood - Maeda - Stripling - Santana and not too far down the line, Dustin May is also lurking in the back ground. then there is probable signings of a Japanese or a Korean import we always shop around, then the pending free agency.
the point is to get under the cap, erase the years of tax escalation, and be prepared as our cheap babies become arbitration eligible and eventually commanding big contracts.
ehhhhh f it.

Frontline Starting Pitching
Neddy wrote:that's exactly it. we are built on starting pitchers, and we have a ton of them as is. With all due respect to Ryu, his health and fitness has been an issue and will continue to be a concern for me. I'm not really interested in mid-tier options. They're important to consider, sure, but my primary concern is and has been frontline starting pitching. We've had plenty of mid-tier pitching options to the point of surplus. Now there has been some benefit to that given our depth, but the reason we haven't really won a ring in over 30 years has been because we haven't gotten topnotch performance in the postseason from our starters whether it's Kershaw's inconsistencies or the likes of Darvish's lily-liveredness.
I've wanted to sell the farm for the likes of Noah Syndergaard and I still do. I'm relieved that we were able to retain May in the Machado trade since he's a valuable commodity on the trade market. In year's past, we've been searching for a premier #2 starter but now we'd need 2 frontline pitchers if Kershaw leaves even with Buehler's ascension.
I've already previously acknowledged that Kershaw is more like a #3 starter for us now and Buehler is practically our ace right now.
I'm hoping the Mets will be open to selling Thor this coming off-season. I'd rather go after Syndergaard but I'd "settle" for Jacob deGrom at this point. I only say "settle" because deGrom is already 30 years-old. If Kershaw leaves, we'll need a premier southpaw to replace him. I can't count on Urias filling the role just yet.
