Miami Heat forward Justise Winslow has agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension, league sources told ESPN.

The extension for Winslow, 22, underscores the Heat's continued belief that he can be a key player on an Eastern Conference contender.

Welcome to a new NBA season full of new looks, new courts and the full force of LockerVision.

Lowe's early NBA predictions: Who gets an extension?
Zach Lowe predicts which 2015 first-round picks will agree to new deals before Monday's deadline.

Roc Nation completed the deal with Heat president Pat Riley and general manager Andy Elisburg on Friday afternoon, league sources said. Miami holds a team option in the third year of the deal, sources said.

Winslow was eligible for his rookie extension as part of the NBA's draft Class of 2015 and faced a Monday deadline to complete an extension. Without an extension, those players can enter restricted free agency on July 1.

Current teams can match offer sheets and retain restricted free agents.

The signing of Winslow's extension comes with short-term financial implications in any trade scenario that would make it extremely difficult for Miami to include Winslow into an outgoing deal.

After surgery to repair a torn shoulder labrum shortened what had began as a promising 2016-17 season, Winslow played 68 games a season ago and averaged 7.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists for the Heat.

He was a second-team NBA All-Rookie selection in 2016, and a member of Duke's national championship team in 2015. He was the 10th overall pick in the NBA draft.

Winslow is the third member of the NBA draft's Class of 2015 to agree to a rookie extension. Minnesota's Karl-Anthony Towns (five-year, $190 million) and Phoenix's Devin Booker (five-year, $158 million) signed max extensions.

Give it time, he'll become as good as Jimmy Butler or Paul George in no time.

Now you're paying Winslow 13 million a year? You sure love your role players.

Should be noted that the 3rd year is a Team option. Slight overpay those first two years to be able to control that 3rd.

It's steep but it could have been much worse if it was a longer deal. Definitely gives Miami a lot of flexibility to get out of it after 2 years.

Perfect deal. No long commitment, give Miami some time to see what they have. Winslow the opportunity to bet on himself by securing good money upfront. If he kills it his cap hold would be 13 mill on team option, team can pick up all the big FA, then relinquish team option and sign new contract with bird rights (I think) for true max. Flexibility here is huge

i dont get it,according to riley we are in a logjam due to the heat overpaying players and the heat knowing this they extend the contract of a player that might or not be to big bucks?

say what,****? :o :o this does NOT compute unless they are planning or know that the heat is going to threadmil for quite awhile....

I guess why not? Heat wouldn't be players in Free agency in 2019 or 2020 even before this contract. only way they can shake up the roster is through a trade and Winslow could be an attractive trade piece with a somewhat reasonable contract if he continues to improve. the james johnson, tyler johnson, Dion waiters and kelly O contracts really are killing this club. Those are 4 radioactive contracts. Who would take them back in a trade?

I think KO's contract is reasonable. I like his game.

I was expecting a long-term deal around 9 mil per annum. Looks like the management is still really high on him.

I wouldn't have been surprised to see a J-Rich+ contract like 5 years 72 mill or something so I'm glad this contract lets us retain him with minimal impact to our long term strategy and cap space. We need to move some other wings though. If Jimmy came for Dion and J-Rich, that would be a great way to improve at a position by combining two wings for 1. I'd still probably want to move TJ, ideally for a 1 year contract or to a team with a bit of cap space for a lower contract over 2 years. Quality of returning player irrelevant. Not sure if Sacramento would want TJ for garbage - they only have 27 mill committed for next season and I can't imagine 80 mill of quality Free agents joining Sac? Seems too lopsided in our favour though

Paying Josh Richardson early paid huge dividends. I like this move. I'm still high on Justise's upside.

It's unfair to call a 22 year old who has considerable upside a "role player". He is a role player now, doesn't mean he'll always be. Jimmy Butler was still a role player when he was 23 and was a very similar player.

That would have been some plus! JRich only got 4-yr/$42M.

True - that may be too plus...

But just saying I would not have been surprised to see Miami go all in, but this is effectively a 2 year 26 mill if the third is a team option.

Isn't the salary cap going up to 109M and with that the MLE should be around 4/40ish. So you are paying him 3M per year more than the MLE, which doesn't sound super bad.

This forum regularly undervalues contracts. I'm not surprised it is a higher number than expected. In my opinion, the team option is what's important. We can jettison a lot of dead weight in 2 years.
