2018-19 Offseason Thread

Post#1 » by Schad » Fri Oct 12, 2018 11:13 pm

MLBtr released the arb projections for their model, so I figured it's time for this.

Blue Jays (11)

Marcus Stroman – $7.2MM
Ken Giles – $6.6MM
Yangervis Solarte – $5.9MM (has a $5.5MM club option)
Kevin Pillar – $5.3MM
Randal Grichuk – $4.8MM
Aaron Sanchez – $3.8MM
Devon Travis – $2.4MM
Jake Petricka – $1.7MM
Ryan Tepera – $1.7MM
Brandon Drury – $1.4MM
Joe Biagini – $1.0MM

Assuming that Solarte gets non-tendered ($750k buyout), that would mean $98.6m committed to 15 players, not including those who are still pre-arb.

Tough spot. Some big decisions for the rebuild. Need to jettison so much, and commit to a very few.

I'm pretty well done with,,,,, Stro, Solarte, Pillar, Travis...Any of the other low-salary dudes seem irrelevant. (Go Drury!?). I'm also very neutral on Grichuk. Our stable is really really bare.

When we are winning in 2022/23, you will see literally none of these names. (or maybe just Sanchez)

Correct, none of those names that will all be free agents after the 2020 season be on the roster in 2022 or 2023.

Even as somebody who wants to see a competitive team in 2020, I don't know that keeping all of the contracts that will expire in that year is a good idea. For one, we'll be wasting the 2019 season when it's not likely we'll be very good. And two, it's a risk to gamble on how good a pitcher will be two years from now. Stro, Sanchez, Giles... these are guys we should be trading. Solarte is just dead weight, we might not even pick up his option. And we have other options than Pillar, there's no need to keep him around. Grichuk can handle CF and we have tons of options for the corners. Unfortunately none of these guys had a very good season, but I think it's a mistake to hold guys hoping for a bounce-back. We're not the only ones who know what Stro is like when he's on his game. It's not like people see him as a 5.54 ERA guy. A team looking for a starter that can help in the near term would still pay a good price for him. Especially a team with an elite infield defense that could take advantage of his ground-ball tendencies, like the Angels, Cardinals, or D'Backs.

Yeah, I think that's the thing: there's actual value in moving a number of those 2020 FAs. It's not just to jettison them. Maybe not superstar packages, but there are parallels between the Stromans and Gileses and Smoaks and the guys the Indians were trading that returned, like, half the roster in their WS appearance. Shipping Pillar out this offseason and moving Grichuk to CF has the dual value of potentially enhancing Grichuk's trade value, as well. We can wait on Giles, but I'd imagine that he rebuilt some of his market with his strong final six weeks.

Sanchez is the only one I might disagree on, but that's solely because I'd be trading Giles and slotting Sanchez into the closer's role for the first half of 2019, where I suspect that he'd excel, and excelling in that role would return some of his mystique (including for teams that might still envision him as a starter).

Sanchez should 100% go to the pen. Has proved he isn’t durable enough to be a starter. He can regain some huge value and trade him. I’d keep Giles. Set up a 8-9 inning combo of Sanchez and Giles and move both at the deadline.

Paying Tulo $14 million in 2020 is going to be such a treat.

Im tired of seeing Pillar and would like to see him moved.

Im hoping Jays eat some of the contract of Martin and Tulo and trade them but thats wishful thinking.

But this offseason will be interesting. New manager, alot of guys might be traded this winter and cant wait for vladdy

I predict Martin traded to the Dodgers for nothing of real face value and the Jays retaining at least 15M likely more.

Grandal is a FA and the Dodgers likely can’t re-sign him with their financial situation and likely don’t want to do they can save money for other free agents. Plus they have a top catching prospect in Ruiz in AA, one year of Martin should give him enough time.

Jays clear a spot for their catchers with multiple years of control and roll with Jansen and Maile with McGuire in Buffalo and the abundance of catching depth behind him.

Manny Machado: When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong.

If ever there was a time to spend 30 days going on a publicity tour to convince people you have good character, it was October 2018. First time on the national stage, out of Baltimore and into LA, in the World Series, immediately prior to reaching the free agent market for the first time in his 8 year pro career. Kudos to him for his honesty, I guess. But you have to think that if it doesn't reduce the amount of money certain teams are willing to pay him, it probably reduces the likelihood that certain teams will make an offer at all. They take a $300M risk on him and his new team stumbles through the first season with more high-profile laziness and jackassery, and the GM that made the decision to bring him in might feel a little less comfortable in his chair. Chances of a fanbase looking back and saying "hey why didn't we spend $300M on that guy?" are pretty slim, no matter how good he is.

Danny Jansen 2.2 fwar projection would put him just outside the top 10 in MLB catchers. Many we're injured last year or didn't play as much as usual. Most playoff teams used both catchers plenty.

Russell projects for 0.5 fwar with a 100 wrc+.

The hiring of a new manager in Charlie Montoyo and some 40-man roster housecleaning behind them, the Toronto Blue Jays fully dive into the business of the off-season this week during the General Managers Meetings in Carlsbad, Calif.

With a team in rebuild mode after aggressively transitioning the roster during a trying 73-89 season, GM Ross Atkins isn’t necessarily working from as defined a shopping list as in previous years.

Certainly adding to the club’s pitching staff – ideally by reallocating some of the position-player surplus, but also through value free-agent buys – will be a priority. But even as they shift into the integration phase of a rebuild, talent accumulation, no matter the position, will still take precedence.

Without doubt the biggest year-to-year addition Atkins will make is an internal one with the looming debut of top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – who’ll be up no later than late April once the team secures another year of control on him, if not sooner. Others are sure to follow him, and a desire to give opportunities to their in-house talent means the Blue Jays won’t be seeking any substantial free-agent adds.

The likelihood is Atkins will try to be most active on the trade market, and how bold he gets in terms of using the in-house assets at his disposal will be one of many things this off-season that will be intriguing to watch.

Sucks that we are losing Harold Ramiez after a pretty good season in Double A, but I guess we would have lost in Rule 5 draft anyways:

Harold Ramirez, a corner outfielder initially acquired by the Blue Jays at the 2016 trade deadline, has elected free agency.

Ramirez spent the 2018 season with Toronto’s New Hampshire affiliate, hitting .320/.365/.471 with 11 home runs and 37 doubles in his third season at double-A. A right-handed hitter, Ramirez stolen 16 bases in 18 attempts.
