When is deadline for picking up 3rd or 4th year options for guys on rookie contracts?

I'm sure some of you know. I couldn't find it in a quick google search, but didn't take a lot of time. Also is today the deadline for cutting regular roster to 15 or is that tomorrow?

It was historically 10/31, not sure if that changed with the new CBA that some of these deals were signed under when the scale went up. The 2016 guys (Simmons, Ingram ect.) are definitely 10/31, unclear about last year's class.

It's probably all 10/31.

I thought I had originally heard 10/29 but then it seems like I saw posts of people indicating it was today. But perhaps that was roster cuts to get down to 15.

Seems like the date to pick it up should be more like March or April. If you don't pick it up in October it kind of makes zero sense to help further develop the guy....because if you do it well, I believe other teams can offer him more than you can, and of course at that point he'd probably rather go elsewhere.

It is still 10/31.

Monday, 10/15 (tomorrow) is the deadline for two things. At 5:00 PM EST all teams must be down to a maximum of 15 standard contracts and 2 Two-Way contracts.

Then 6:00 PM EST is the deadline to reach an agreement for rookie scale extensions.

This says it's still 10/31.

That's for team options.

Another question. Can you convert a non guaranteed contract into a 2 way contract or do you have to cut him and allow him to go through the waiver process?

Oh, and one more. If you got a disabled player exception, does that player still count as a roster spot? And if so, can you waive that player after getting the exception (and if so, still use the exception)?

Don't know about turning non-guaranteed into 2-way but with the disabled player exception, the player does not count as a roster spot. Because the exception is only given to a player who will not appear in a game in the upcoming season due to injury, there is no need to waive the player as they can not play. Instead, it just acts like a 16th roster spot due to some bad luck.

In the case of Darrell Arthur (which I'm guessing is why you brought this up), he will most likely not get the DPE because PHX traded for him while knowing he was already injured. In this case, we can still waive him but the 7.4 mil will count against our cap. Although, in the unlikely case the DPE is granted, we will only have to cut 1 player instead of 2 to get down to 16 players on the official roster.

Edit: Actually I am wrong. I looked it up some more it opens some salary to fill the spot but the player still counts towards 15

1. Only if the contract is structured to be able to do so. I assume you are talking about Alfonzo McKinnie? He was converted to a Two-Way. Then he was signed from his Two-Way to a two-year deal. It was smart maneuvering from the Warriors.

1A. And the player has to be eligible for a Two-Way contract as well. Meaning, he has to have 3 years or less of service, as well as have a convertible contract.

2. This is a little tricky. There are parts.

2A. Yes. He counts against the roster. The DPE is an exception, not a roster exemption. It's similar to the Taxpayer or Non-Taxpayer, in that it allows you to exceed the cap to sign a player. But you must have a roster spot for that player.

2B. You can waive the player you got the DPE and still use the DPE. But, you have to do it after the DPE is granted. If you waive the player before, you know longer have him to be granted a DPE for.

As an aside, there is a good chance the NBA denies the Suns petition. There is a belief that Arthur isn't actually injured and out for the duration of the season. Many think the NBA will find that he's not and deny the petition.

This is incorrect. A team is not granted an additional roster spot.

It seems the Suns should just waive Arthur then, and I don't know if they can convert Canaan or Harrison into a 2 way, but if not, they might clear waivers and they could do it then. I hope they don't cut Reed.

Neither Canaan nor Harrison is eligible to be converted to a Two-Way deal. My guess is they cut Arthur and probably Canaan. The former is a somewhat easy decision. The latter is tough, especially with the lack of PGs on the roster.

Why is Harrison not? I thought the requirement was less than four years of NBA service and he has 1?

He's not on a convertible contract from what I understand. More goes into it than just years of service.

So because he is on a guaranteed contract, he is unable to be waived, go unclaimed, and be re-signed on a 2-way?

Or are you just saying you can't convert it from a guaranteed to a 2-way because I know you can't do that but I thought you could convert to a 2-way through the waiver process?

No, I'm almost certain if he gets waived and clears waivers we can sign him to a 2 way...because he's just a free agent. We just can't convert him while under a current contract.
