President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

I assume Milwaukee needed some incentive considering they're waiving Jodie.

Because we saved 10.4M in salary and Lux tax.

I'll wait to see what the pick is though..might be some top 50 protected nonsense to which I wont really care about as much.

Another thing is, Meeks makes 3.4M this year in salary, but remember his suspension for 19 games.
His 3.4M actually counts 3.1M against the Cap and 2.65M in actual cash.

So Anything over 2.65M in cash to the Bucks is just sweetener. aannnndddd also, His salary is paid out over the year, while the cash is a single transfer (I believe)
That helps from a cash flow standpoint for the organization / business.

Hopefully it's a heavily protected pick, otherwise I'm just gonna facepalm. Why not dump Smith instead somewhere and save even more $$$? Then just sign Tyler Zeller and dump Meeks at the deadline.

I think you just removed the protections on the 2020 2nd round pick you owed us. Might be wrong.

Because Jason Smith makes 2M more than Meeks... and no one has an exception (Yet) for that amount.
Better to pay his salary throughout the year and revisit in January

I just noticed that exception, you're right about that. Sacramento has cap space but already 15 guys. Well, anyways, I'm not happy trading a pick to dump a contract this early in the season. Shouldn't be a surprise though knowing Ernie's relationship with 2nd rounders.

On a small scale this is YET another EG clean-up, Meeks & Smith should NEVER had gotten the player option.

Interesting. If this is right, it might merely be a pick swap where Milwaukee has the right to our pick if it's higher than theirs.

If that's the case, then it's really a good deal. Ted saves a net of $7M and all it costs him is a few slots in the 2nd round.

Here is what happened. You owed us a 2020 top 55 protected (from 2015). Now, we owe you a 2020 top 55 protected (flip), and you owe us a 2020 unprotected (as per this).

Essentially, we got an unprotected 2nd (and money) to go ahead with the deal and get him on our cap. This was a win-win, since you save a lot more due to your cap situation (around $10M) and we managed to use our Monroe exception which would have expired in three weeks.

So, in other words. We got a 2nd round pick that will never happen for a second round pick that will happen. Brilliant Ernie. Save a few drachma for Ted and start your vacation earlier because you don’t have to scout second rounders anymore.

Ehhh. Not a fan, but we did save 10.5M so far... and I assume we are making a two year run with this group, which means that pick is in the low 50's.
As I mentioned with PIF. The whole picture of the Meeks transaction looks terrible and EG should clearly be gone, but this is actually decent value.
It really depends on if this is the 1st step in a bigger trade to get under the tax.

Yeah, Ernie actually isn't bad at cleaning up messes. He got relatively reasonable value getting out of the Nicholson deal, too. His problem is that he's somewhere between average and absolutely terrible at doing anything besides making messes and then cleaning them up. And he makes so many messes that he's generally just biding his time for an opportunity to clean them up. The itch that he gets to give multi-year contracts to veterans who clearly aren't going to help that much is a problem, as is his inability to really build a glut of younger bench talent (think 4 or 5 players that all develop at the same time) behind whatever veterans he might sign or trade for - part of that is because he's using those picks to clean up his messes, and another part is that he really hasn't shown much interest in developing players beyond one at a time.

I see. So if we view all those top 55 protected 2nds as meaningless, then essentially, we traded away our unprotected 2nd round pick to dump Meeks. We even sent the cash to pay his salary but at least we got $7M in luxtax fees off the books.

From Milwaukee's perspective, they spent literally nothing to get back a 2nd round pick. The only asset they spent was luxtax flexibility (meaning they probably can't do a similar deal again this year), but there was no actual cost to ownership and no sacrifice in meaningful future picks.

From our perspective, we traded a 2nd round pick to save Ted $7M in luxtax fees. It is a win-win, but one would hope that they could convince Milwaukee to give up something for that pick.

Correction. I doubt we saved $10.5M because I'm assuming the cash we included in the transaction was the $3.5M to pay for Meeks' salary. (Maybe we only sent about $2.7M to pay the pro-rated remainder after his suspension.)

Correct. Net Savings assuming no further transaction and converting Robinson the roster will be about 5M. Still, not bad.
Biggest thing is this needs to be a part of a bigger plan to get under tax.

Are there any potential targets for that TPE?

If EG ever bought 2nd round picks I would rate this as a very good move. Especially if Meeks is being moved to make space for a young guy on the roster.
