The move to pick up Bembry’s option is a chance for the guard/forward to unlock his potential. Bembry, the No. 21 overall pick in 2016, has been injured for much of his two seasons. He has averaged 3.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 64 career games. He appeared in 38 games as a rookie and 26 games last season. He was also slowed this offseason due to injury. Bembry will earn $2.6 million for the option year.

I'm not surprised. He had an injuty riddled 2nd season and his tantalizing defensive ability made it an easy call. Didn't hurt that his 3pt shot looked decent in preseason.

Congradz, he played well in preseason.

I wouldn't be surprised if his shooting was a make or break for this decision. He's been in the league a year longer than Dorsey but there is a big difference between the two. Especially on the defensive end.

Lloyd Pierce said that Bembry has been at the practice facility since the Hawks tabbed Pierce to be their head coach this summer.

"Dre' showed up with his mom," Pierce said of the press conference that announced his hiring.  "From that day moving forward, he and (assistant coach Chris) Jent have been in the gym, if not five days a week, then six days a week.

Pierce noted that Bembry shot the ball well from the field in the preseason, flashing a nicely-improved jump shot.

"He's done it in a very efficient manner: 46 percent from three and over 50 percent overall," Pierce said. "He's just playing good basketball. He's one of those guys who we have to keep under control with the turnover issue, but I think that he has been great for us. He provides us with two-way opportunities. He is able to guard the best perimeter players. He is able to slash and get to the rim."

Bembry had high praise for his tutor, who once won an NBA Championship with the Houston Rockets in 1994.

"He's a great shooter

," Bembry said of Jent, who spent most of his 10-year pro career in Europe. "I switched up a few minor adjustments to my jump shot. Now I feel a lot more comfortable and confident.

:D

We learn who our shooting coach is and we are thankful for our health leader, Chelsea Lane and what she brings to our injured Hawk players!

It's a pity Bembry was injured so much last year. Jent would have done wonders for him and he'd maybe further along wirh his shooting. Hopefully what we say in preseason holds.
He was 1/4 in first game.

16 rebounds?!!

When Bembry is PG, it's usually him going to the rim or running the motion offense.

It works OK but certainly could get better.

This is a nice piece, if slightly clunky to read.

DeAndre Bembry’s reintroduction to Atlanta

Image

Only a couple of day before the regular season began, the Hawks announced that Bembry would be included in the young trio of Taurean Prince and John Collins of getting his $2.6 million option picked up for a fourth year. Two weeks into the new season, the former first round pick has played in the most consistent rotational role of his professional career.

“[I] was just trying to get my body right,” Bembry said of his most recent offseason’s routine. “Staying in the gym. When we got a new coach with Lloyd [Pierce], I’ve been with him since day one with the summer league team. Just getting my body right and working out, and I feel like it’s working so far.”

Bembry is currently averaging 8.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists a night, but his main impact hasn’t been displayed through the typical stat line.

The energy that the 6-foot-6 wing has brought on both sides of the ball is [undeniable].

“I think DeAndre’s spirit and his energy has been great,” Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce said during last Saturday’s post-game press conference against the Chicago Bulls. “We put him all over the place defensively. He’s guarding a lot of guys, being one of the guys tonight, but I think he’s given us what he has. He’s a competitor, he’s an athlete, he’s an attacker. I love what he’s been doing since this season has started.”

“It’s a different type of feel,” Bembry said. “I’ve been on older teams before, so seeing all of these younger guys I definitely feel like I can help, but we also have a couple of older guys like Vince [Carter] and Jeremy Lin that can help us, as well. I mean, we’re still young ourselves.”

Bembry said that he will continue to work on his core and his jump shot on the court. Off the court, he said that his family has continued to support him through his ups and downs during his first couple of seasons.

Good read on how his finishing at the rim still needs work. I would surmise part of that is his freethrow shooting 60% currently. He Doesn't like the freethrow line much...

Haha. No. Unless we sell high! I'm glad to be wrong on that one although i don't think the question marks on shooting have been erased yet. Still Bembry really is the one guy who seems to understand what bringing it means. And honestly his ballhandling has really improved.

Of course it wasn't so much his play that hampered him the first 2 years.

It's a make or break season for Brembry, so if he wants to continue buying $300 bottles of rosé, he better show out.

Bembry has been such a surprise this season - he has been healthy for the season. Can't wait for him to start the offseason healthy so he can focus on 3 point shooting (29%) and freethrow shooting (63%).
He has gotten his TOs somewhat under control and he has gotten so much better at finishing at the rim with moves like these:

I wouldn't be surprised if we look to move Bembry this offseason.

Everything I said about him two seasons ago remains true. Still can't shoot at all from deep, still has sloppy handles, still loves throwing himself into traffic for bad shots. He is a league-average defender who does nothing else at a starting or core rotation level.
