Same old Otto; same old Wizards ... mail the season in

Post#1 » by Gig18 » Fri Oct 19, 2018 5:00 pm

Annnnnnnd, the season is over. So damn disheartening. Otto Porter is probably a GREAT person, the kind of guy you'd want to hang out with, or be buds with. But damn. He is NOT what you want in your third franchise player.
After an ENTIRE offseason of talking about how he HAS to be more assertive offensively --- INCLUDING a huge Washington Post story about it the DAY of the game --- he gives us 7 shots in four quarters, 9 points and not a single assist.
This team desperately NEEDS a third scorer. Wall and Beal can't do it alone. Defense is important; team play is essential. But winning basketball is about scoring more points than the other team. I think Otto would lose playing a game of 21 one-on-one because he would only take 3 shots.
When we were a threat, we had Webber, Howard and Strickland; or Gilbert, Jamison and Hughes; or Gilbert, Jamison and Caron.
Wall gave us 26; Beal gave us 20. Otto took fewer than 2 shots per quarter.
Even in pick-up basketball that doesn't work. I think he's traded before season's end.

Dude, they scored 112 points without Howard and a passive Otto. Dwight is good for 14-16 points if he's healthy so there's your third or fourth option. If you think the main reason we lost was due to Otto's lack of touches or shots, I think your BB IQ is right up there with Oubre's. :noway:

Porter led the team in rebounds, steals and blocks. He committed 0 turnovers and had just 1 foul. Yes, he was invisible offensively, but let's not act like he was hurting the team out there or something. He still spread the floor on offense because he is a threat to shoot, and he was our most impactful defensive player.

The day they trade Otto before the other overrated franchise players on this team is the day I finally stop rooting for Terd's Wizards.

I do believe that Porter is on the wrong team/system, he is the odd man out in the Trio. Otto would be very successful elsewhere, not sure he would get paid $26 million per year though.

Yes, we needed more offensively from Otto last night...and for the rest of the season. But, while OP is often far too passive on offense, I'm not going to put all the blame on him. This team--the coaches, Wall & Beal and other Otto himself--needs to figure out how to get Otto more shoots. He's too good of a shooter to take just 7 shots. OP needs to average at least 14-15 shots a game.

Loved what Otto did in other aspects of the game last night, especially on the boards. But, damn, he needs to shoot more...a lot more.

Yup. Its clear this team needs to get Oubre starting and sliding Otto to the 4. Otto cant get the separation from 3's, but he'd run 4's ragged.
Also, Oubre as a starter would feel less pressure to take shots and create offensively. Because he comes in now and tries to do too much on that end.
The first 10 shots of the game should be split 2/4/4 for Wall/Beal/Otto... then adjust accordingly.

Wall and Beal are tremendously overrated.

The Wizards have a bad coach.

I agree with you on Porter, who is a very good and unselfish player

Porter is good--don't think he's 26,27,28 million dollars a year good. I'd certainly rather have Covington at 11, 12, and 12.9 million a year. I think Porter's on/off defensive contributions look better due to the absolute knucklehead that is Oubre coming in to replace him. I'm not particularly impressed by Porter defensively. For every good move on a passing lane and rebound, there's the absolute reality that he can't guard penetration from a guard on a switch---an absolute necessity for your 3/4 today in the modern NBA. His great rebounding numbers also come at an obvious cost--his tendency to over help and crash the boards early instead of committing to stay on his man until the possession is truly dead, though that's a team wide issue.

My #1 issue is Brooks right now. He's killing us.

The whole team is overrated but only by some of the fan base. No one outside the Wiz organization takes this team serious. Can't really call that overrated.

And does it even matter no one is beating the Warriors anytime soon anyways.
