There are so many home reno shows it's hard to keep track, but this one will be memorable. LaMarcus is participating in a new such program with a kindhearted twist:

Aldridge to appear on home renovation TV show

Spurs All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge will be the focus of episode two of the CBS Television Network's "Superstar Renovation," a one-hour show that features sports celebrities giving the gift of a home makeover to people who have played a special role in their lives.

Aldridge will return to Dallas to surprise his high school coach with a home renovation. The air-date of the episode has not yet been announced, according to a press release from JUMA Entertainment, the producers of "Superstar Renovation."

Aldridge's choice was Robert Allen, his coach at Seagoville High School in the Dallas sub-urb.

"It's a cool show," Aldridge said. "Just helping give back to someone you care about or you feel was important to you getting where you are. I did my high school coach because he was definitely a huge influence on me, changing my path of where I was going to where I am now. We did some cool things to his house."

Aldridge's episode is scheduled to run as the second installment of the series. A spokesperson for JUMA Entertainment, which produces the series, said the date of the episode has not been announced yet.

Spurs Youth Basketball League has been garnering more attention recently with an auction (ending October 10 at 10pm) and District 4 City Councilman Rey Saldaña's Spurs Story about how it affected his life. Spurs’ youth league has lifted children from streets to NBA

The odds of going from the Spurs Youth Basketball League to the Spurs’ NBA roster are about as good as sinking an eyes-closed, behind-the-back shot from halfcourt. But Devin Brown enjoyed an eight-year NBA career and was a member of the Spurs’ championship teams in 2003 and 2005. He grew up on the South Side and played for the youth league when it was introduced nearly 30 years ago as the Spurs Drug-Free Basketball League.

“It’s a great experience,” he said. “Even if you don’t go on to play in the NBA and have some kind of storied career, being in that league is going to teach you about how to approach life the right way.”

The Spurs Youth Basketball League, which serves about 10,000 South Texas kids annually and is geared toward low-income families and communities, is a beneficiary of the Spurs’ nonprofit partner, Silver & Black Give Back. The latter organization is holding an online tipoff auction, which began Sept. 24 and closes at 10 p.m. Oct. 10....

All proceeds benefit the youth league, which receives about $125,000 annually from SBGB, according to youth sports coordinator Amanda Fite. She said SBGB provides free jerseys to all players and coaches in the low-cost youth league, as well as on- and off-court training for its volunteer coaches.

The organization also helps sponsor three annual youth clinics involving Spurs players and provides nearly 1,500 tickets to Spurs games for youth players and their families.

The league, co-founded by Popovich when he was a Spurs assistant, partners with 25 different youth organizations in San Antonio, Austin, Laredo and the Corpus Christi area. Its alumni include Brown; current NBA player Jordan Clarkson; and Marcus Keene, who played professionally in Italy last year.

Keene’s father, Ivan Keene, who coached his son in the youth league, said it helps keep some area kids away from dangerous influences and lifestyles. Jeremy Martinez, a premium account executive for the Spurs, played in the youth league while growing up on the West Side.

“The league really helped me find a way to have extracurricular activities and just keep me out of trouble and strengthen my friendships with my friends,” Martinez said. “I still talk to those people today.”

The mission of WINGS is to bridge the gap between diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, providing comprehensive breast health services to women in Central and South Texas who are uninsured…because everyone deserves a lifetime.

What We Do

WINGS is designed to fill the gap that exists between breast cancer detection and treatment. For many Central and South Texas uninsured women, WINGS is their only option for what is hoped to be life-saving care and treatment. WINGS utilizes a network of physicians and treatment centers to give these women a real chance at fighting this deadly disease. Beyond treatment, WINGS works in concert with organizations dedicated to education and outreach.

OUR STORY

WINGS was founded in 1999 by two women, a breast cancer patient and her breast surgeon. They both knew firsthand the struggles women face even if they are insured. They realized many women have no insurance at all, and no fighting chance to beat this horrible disease. That was unacceptable. So, they decided to become Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving and Sharing – WINGS! WINGS gives uninsured women in South and Central Texas a fighting chance to beat breast cancer, by filling the vacuum that exists between detection and treatment....

WINGS is not only about the treatment of breast cancer, but we are also dedicated to education and outreach. We want to bring quality care to all women with breast cancer. Studies have shown the survival rate of WINGS patients far surpasses national averages (according to the National Cancer Society statistics). We believe it’s because of the stress free environment and quality of care that is provided to our patients.
