The HOU deal makes sense for both sides. Morey is obsessed with beating the Warriors, and after losing Ariza and LRMAM, it’s unlikely they have the horses, especially when we don’t know what Boogie might add in the playoffs. Morey needs every bit of talent per dollar, so Knight needs to be in the deal. To reach the right value, stacking up win-later (not win-now) assets is his only hope to add an All-NBA quality talent right now.
Morey is also facing horrific lux and repeater taxes after re-signing Butler, so Dieng can’t be in a deal. In fact, I would imagine even Eric Gordon looks a little scary, if you have to pay lux taxes on top of his $14 mil salary.
I suspect he’s offering Knight plus filler (Chriss, Qi, Nene?) plus four 1sts AND Gordon for Taj Gibson
Moving Gordon frees up minutes for Jimmy, and helps the Rockets financially next season. Taj and Gordon are similar in productivity, but Taj has a skill set that overlaps the Rockets stars less, and most importantly, Morey can use his Bird rights to try to bring him back at a reasonable number next year.
For MIN, Gordon and Taj are both reasonably paid, and a win-now Thibs would want to bring back a starting swingman. I don’t think MIN should be heading towards using assets to try to clear cap for this summer’s crowded free agency, so Gordon’s second year is not a big drawback. MIN can afford to lose Taj with a resurgent Dieng and Tolliver - more minutes helps justify the money spent on both. I would hope with this change, MIN could get all later picks fully unprotected. I would also note that neither team would need to wait until October 31 to complete these simultaneous trades.
