Post#621 » by Mischa » Thu Sep 20, 2018 4:59 am

In watching a few commercials over the weekend, two music background drops jumped out at me.

First of all, I think I heard a Rolling Stones song in a commercial for the first time, ever. It was a cover version of "Sympathy for the Devil" for what I think was a car commercial. (A heavy cover version of the song. Sounded pretty good, actually).

Made me think, "Well, I guess the Stones don't have enough hundreds of millions of dollars individually, so might as well sell portions of their catalog for another few million."

**

There used to be a loss of street cred for artists who "sold out" and allowed their music to be used in commercials. But I don't think it carries the same stigma that it used to. And it's become an effective way for bands to get their music heard by the masses (google search interviews with John Mellencamp about this topic. After selling a song for a car commercial, he said, "it turns out that General Motors is a better record company than Columbia or MCA.")

[He simply said he wanted people to be aware that he had a new song out, a new album, and he had no faith in the record company promoting his work, and no faith that his new songs would get airplay. He lamented that Tom Petty had released what John thought was a great album one year earlier, but no one knew anything about the album because old acts weren't getting any airplay.]

So the Stones, 50-plus years into their career, have "sold out." Some would say they've been selling out, in more ways than one, for more than 40 years. Dabbling in disco probably disappointed their fanbase in the late '70s.

I don't think "cred" is anything Mick Jagger and the guys are worried about at this point. And I guess I don't care one way or another.

**

On the other side of the coin, there’s a new blues/hard rock band I’m sure many you have heard of from Frankenmuth MI called Greta Van Fleet. They are young guys, early 20s, and they sound like early Led Zeppelin. Almost exactly like Led Zeppelin.

This sound has given them an instant following with older rock fans who have precious, precious few new bands to listen to, because that genre of music has become an endangered species. So Greta Van Fleet is a wonderful breath of fresh air for tons of older fans, and I'm assuming that at least a few younger fans are appreciating them to.

So this past weekend, I noticed a commercial for Fanatics.com sports apparel, and in the background is Greta Van Fleet's song, "Highway tune."

**

So it struck me that here's one band, the Rolling Stones, 50-plus years into their career, one of the top two most famous bands ever, and they are just now "selling out."

And here is the apparent torch bearer of blues/rock, brand new Greta Van Fleet, "selling out" with basically their first or second song.

I thought it was interesting and ironic.

Feel free to disagree or challenge anything that I posted, because I'm by no means an expert on music. I just call 'em as I see 'em.

Seems like a lot of great songs by great bands have been used in commercials, but I don't have many good examples, though I do remember a popular Rush song being used not long ago in a car commercial.

Now Rush isn't on the level of Rolling Stones for popularity but what made me respond to your post.....you think the Stones are top 2 bands ever?

There were kind of before my time, but that seems surprising. Though I guess on the Media Lounge a couple years back some maybe argued they are...put them up with the Beatles or other top bands.

I'm only on ep 4 so far but Bodyguard is pretty good. Finished Haunting of Hill House yesterday (great one) and started on that after.

There is a movie called Suicide: The Ripple Effect that I highly recommend. You can ask for a screening in your community.

Sooo I had a seizure like 5-6 months ago and on the fall I guess I hit my jaw and cracked my wisdom tooth...It doesn't hurt but I knew I had to do something about it because I don't want to get an infection. Went to the dentist today and said I should have it removed along with all the others.

So for starters I would rather get my leg cut off than oral surgery.

My dentist said that they give you an IV and and that I will be conscious during the surgery and that FREAKS me out. I thought you just got knocked out. Also he went way to much into depth about how the surgery would go that freaked me out more. He was showing me pictures of my teeth and like they are going to cut here and pull this back and this and that....AHHHHHHHHHH

So if anyone has had any kind of procedure like this before Id really like to know if the drug they put in you really helps that much even though you are still conscious...and anything else. Im scuurreedd. Thanks.

I got my wisdom teeth taken out but I don't remember being conscious. But I have gotten other dental work done to where they numb you so much you can't feel a thing. Can't you just tell him you want to be knocked out?

Well that sucks. I usually just bite the bullet on something like that and get it over with. Maybe just take some shots or a lot of GABA before hand.

Yes it does...Also in my bottow jaw i have double the nerve endings...its like 1 in 10 people. They cant even numb the pain for a cavitie. The dude once put like 5 shots in my mouth did nothing i just had to endure it. But this is so much worse...Im farked.

But in the end its like end up dying to some stupid tooth infection or get tortured for awhile?

Hey man.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out while I was awake. They injected a bunch of local anesthetics before removing them all. The first one or two injections were just like getting a shot at the doctors and then after that there was no pain for the remainder of the operation. When they prescribe you something for the pain after the operation, make sure you take it.

Not sure how your nerve situation affects the anesthetic, however.

Not that I can recall. It was just a series of shots which made my mouth completely numb and then the doc went to work.
