This is part of a post from tsherkin on the General board.

The question I have for you guys is when did Gil become a team cancer?
Arenas has played 15 games in 2 years and shot under 40% across those games (39.8% and 26.1% in the 13 and 2 games). The 10 apg average is meaningless, as it was over 2 games.

I do not expect Arenas to be healthy, not after 3 surgeries in 2 years. In fact, I expect him to come back and look terrible as a scoring weapon, though I do expect him to make a more concerted effort to be a facilitator, since his attitude seemed to change as he rehabbed, and to be pretty good at it, because he's always been blessed with natural talent.

Having said that, it's worth mentioning that I do not like Arenas. I hate his style of play and think he's a cancer of a player, so my opinion is biased.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

If TSherkin doesn't want to take Arenas 10 apg in his last two games into account, he shouldn't take Arenas's 2 game stretch where he shot only 26%. Pretty much a hater.

Michael Lee's Wizards Insider on Arenas' surpise appearance yesterday:

"...one only needed a few minutes to watch Arenas at Barry Farms Recreational Center on Friday night to see that the three-time all-star is rounding into shape after three knee surgeries robbed him from most of the past two seasons. Arenas had 35 points, mostly on aggressive drives to the basket. He was surprisingly spry and springy, as he effortlessly attacked the rim for dunks. He had two-handed slams. He had a vicious tomahawk slam. He even dunked on someone. When was the last time you recall seeing Arenas dunking?"

Its nice but its not perfect. Its like I hear all this great stuff and as soon as I get excited, there is always something to bring me back down some. Everyone was starting to brag on him again and then Lebron was the 1st one to say that he looks good but still isnt all the way there yet. Then the reporters at the Farm said that he looked good but still was a step off. What does that really mean? Is he a step off because he's still 45 days out or is he a step off because he's just always going to be a step off. I love hearing the fact that he was blowing by cats again because he has started to settle too much even when he was healthy but everytime I now read about his J, its always off. Why cant he ever do both, get to the rim and hit the J anymore?

I just want it to be perfect. The question is will he get there by the start of the season, by mid season, at the end of the season, will he be like alot of guys who arent fully back until there 2nd year of the comeback, or is this the best that we are ever going to get and he will never have that same burst again? Again, he still will be great and we will be dangerous because he is just that good but I want the old Gil back with his new found passing ability. Thats what I want. My cake and eat it too

I think that this team has its back against the wall, combined with a favorable schedule, they will go on a nice run, winning at least 7 out of 9 if not all 9 straight while basically flying under the radar until its over. We will be playing some quietly good basketball while people will then debate are we good or just had an easy schedule. That will then soon be answered with the tough schedule but our guys will have momentum and will be confident

I'm a pessimist for this year and even I can't believe they're this bad. They have to start playing better, right?

Well lets see... we are minus 12.1 points a game to the league. So I guess we could improve quite a bit & still be pretty bad, huh?

But, if we improve even more we can be pretty good. So lets do that. Lets improve a whole lot -- after all, this is the optimism thread, right?

It was great to see that even though many years have passed some things have remained the same-

1. Wiz fans are loyal to a fault- some really thoughtful and maddening post on this thread...some of the same names too.
2. From Arenas, Butler and Jamison...to Wall, Beal and Otto... we always have second tier all stars and no chance at a ring-
3. Lebron....Lebron is the highlander...an immortal. He was the best player in the league when you posted this...and alas he is today as well.

This franchise has sucked the life out of me. I dont think the National media will ever create an uproar until we literally get to the 20th anniversary of Ernie. That's when his incompetence will finally be scrutinized

Wizards with a good chance to get in the bottom 5, if Atlanta keeps playing well. Maybe Porter can elevate the Bulls, who are currently 10 games behind the Wizards. Wizards with a slight chance to get Zion with the help of a Dukie in Jabari (and Wizards got some help from Rivers as well).

Right. I have decided to like this for now.

I can't stand Ernie, but these trades may have the effect I hope for long term: we play a feisty scrappy team that is offensively fun to watch while collecting pingpong balls. And if we lose enough then maybe 'no excuses' Ted will fire Ernie and we can begin the rebuild in earnest (and without Ernest) with a good draft pick and a new GM.

In replacing Otto and Kieff with Bobby Portis we get the PF version of Thomas Bryant. High energy good attitude, good fire, with poor defense. So we will get excitable fiery players who still lose. We drop Otto who is calm and careful , and Kieff who may be dangerous in a night club but only occasionally gave effort on court, for a guy who is so feisty he punches teammates into the hospital. Maybe he will start punching and punch his way up the stands through complacent cell phone using fans, and keep punching all the way to the front office personnel, and then continue to the owners box.

I'm interested to see if Troy Brown can get any play time, if it becomes clear that 48 minutes of Ariza and Uncle Jeff are not taking us far in our 'All in for the 9th Seed' rush. I'm curious to see a line up that goes like:

Sato
Beal
Troy
Bobby Crazy Eyes
Tommy Hype Bryant

To see if we can get an infusion of attitude and energy with a little savvy and passing around them. I dunno. With lowered expectations that crew could be fun to watch win or lose. And if I allow myself to dream I imagine moving Zion into that line at any of four positions....

Wziard fan drifts off smiling to himself, until its time for medication and group therapy...

ESPN lists 86 power forwards in their RPM rankings. Bobby Portis ranks 84th in DRPM. Jabari Parker ranks 85th. Only Marvin Bagley III is below them. But since this is the optimism thread, I have one bit of optimism:

Markieff Morris ranks 82nd. :nonono:

So having Portis replace Morris shouldn't hurt the defense one bit. :D
