Re: 10 Games, 10 Stats
In the 351 minutes LeBron James has been on the floor, the Lakers have a net rating of -4.8. Further, in the 134 minutes LeBron has been off the floor, the Lakers have a net rating of +6.7. Add it all up and the Lakers have been, through 10 games, 11.5 points per 100 possessions (+9.7 on offense, +1.8 on defense) when LeBron is out of the game. Look, no one is going to argue that LeBron isn’t great or anything dumb like that. He’s clearly still an amazing player even if it’s clear he’s operating about about 55-60% of playoff-LeBron levels. But these numbers are what they are and they’re not good. If you want more bad news, the two players right below LeBron in terms of overall negative net rating when on on the floor are Kuzma (-5.6) and Lonzo (-8.6). Woof.

This is a good thread because I go into every season thinking 10 games is a good enough sample to see what's going on, 25 is solid data and 50 is what your team is going to be.

Re: 10 Games, 10 Stats
Of them #8 is the most interesting. We begin and end the games since Ingram has been back with the Bron/Ingram initiation and most of the time one of them is shooting our passing out to someone with nearly no time on the clock after some form of P&R or isolation. We've been especially forcing this to close games recently. I'd love to see that stat in the 1st and 4th quarters with Bron/Ingram on the court as compared to just one of them. That may give the definition needed to confirm what my eyes have been seeing.
The rebounding one is also interesting. I'm convinced that our defensive rebounding issues have more to do with the "switch everything" defense than they do with the personnel alone. We get caught a lot scrambling in space when shots go up and we aren't blocking out. Further, we tend to have our better rebounders on the perimeter while the smaller guys are in the paint. Again, my eye test against so called advanced stats but the difference this year has more to do with the defensive execution of a flawed scheme IMHO than it does with the personnel.

Re: 10 Games, 10 Stats
We should do what GSW do. They switch, not reactively, but proactively to get the matchup advantage THEY want as the defending team. The aggressive mindset and intelligence of their team defense is a winning model to draw from if you ask me (and Larry O’Brian
).
We currently get switched until we can be easily punished by an advantage created. In Pop’s case he switched us until Aldridge or Gay had KCP on them, repeatedly. They scored this way every time down the court for a way too long stretch. Embarrassing.
Our team defense has ways to go. It starts with LBJ buying in, pulling from the front, bringing Luke’s vision to the floor verbally. He’s practically been ignoring that end of the floor so far.
Want to be popular in LA, LeBron? Here’s the secret sauce: To make it in LA, you have to work your ass off. It takes inhumane effort, perseverance, belief, never give in, being spotless, anticipate well etc etc. In basketball terms this Angeleno show biz mindset translates to something like “play defense like a rabid pit bull on every possession every game while leading your team to win after win”. I know, it’s only game 11 tomorrow but that’s how you win the LA crowd.
It’s time for him to play hard defense blue collar style and then run the break with some glam, and the LA crowd will see him as one of them. Proof? Showtime.
You don’t play defense, you’ll soon start hearing boos. LA knows basketball.

Woof. Not one bit surprised about LBJ, matches his glaring no effort on defense.
As for Kuz and Lonzo, I’d like to revisit their stats after 20-30 games. Too many variables have affected both of their contributions. I’d like to see Ingram and Kuzma get more playing time apart from each other and less together.

Yes, to be fair it's not only a small sample size but also the high variation.
However, what isn't a highly varied small sample is the 203 regular season and playoff games, over the course of which Lebron's defense has permanently degenerated from average to poor.
203. And counting.

Probably 6-4. Hoping for 7-3. Not going to embarrass myself by even mentioning 8-2.

Interesting. Can you tell me how you got those stats? For the last 203 games? I mean, it matches the eye test to be sure. I say that as a huge Lebron fan. I think there is a valid reason for that, but the facts remain, he hasn't been a good defender for a while.
