Warriors host Hawks, Young without Curry

The highly anticipated first head-to-head meeting between two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry and rising star Trae Young apparently won't be happening when the Golden State Warriors host the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.
Curry suffered a strained groin in Thursday's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks and will not play against the Hawks on the second night of a back-to-back.

With or without Curry, the game figures to turn into a 3-point shooting contest.
The Warriors rank sixth in the NBA in made 3-pointers with 12.5 per game and lead the league in 3-point field-goal percentage at 41.9.
The Hawks, meanwhile, are shooting more 3s than last season (35.3, up from 31.0) and are making more (11.8, up from 11.2), but not hitting them at the same rate (33.6 percent, down from 36.0)

I'm thinking Klay let's loose and has a big game against our defense.

Warriors-Hawks cheatsheet: Any KD-Draymond residual to be concerned about?

The Warriors (11-3) will try to overcome the potential fallout from the Draymond Green-Kevin Durant beef and beat the young Atlanta Hawks (3-10) tonight.

Any fallout from the Kevin Durant-Draymond Green beef?

Conventional wisdom says no.

Both players have had spats since they’ve been teammates. Green is a fiery competitor who isn’t afraid to get under a teammate’s skin when he deems it necessary.

Most notably with Durant during a game against the Kings in 2017, when the two were seen arguing on the sidelines during a break in the action.

When it comes down to it, both men have shown to have respect for each other and Monday’s spat shouldn’t change that.

Yeah, no Green tonight.
Green called KD a bitch multiple times and the argument continued after the game in the locker room.

A big win tonight wohld be nice as a 12 point underdog.

Even without Green and Curry, I still wasn't expecting a win in Oakland. Durant and Klay alone outclass our entire team. But I'm still watching these lopsided games (and this one was closer than I expected) to see Trae Young's development, and this was arguably his worst game of the season.

9 assists is great to see, that part of his game is coming naturally. But he scored just 4 points on 12 shots and it's getting more and more demoralizing watching him brick 3 pointer after 3 pointer (0-5 tonight). Seriously, when is that shot gonna start falling? We haven't seen it consistently fall for consecutive games once since we drafted him. He deserved to sit on the bench in the closing stages because Lin gave us a better chance to win.

Taurean Prince got it going with 20 points, when his 3 is falling he's very dangerous. When it's not, then it's a tale of two players. Deandre Bembry also did a bit of everything tonight.

Yeah, it's becoming a thing now. An issue that league observers are talking about. And I think Young is putting too much thought into it trying to break out of this slump.

He's better on catch-and-shoots than pull ups. I'd like to see Lloyd incorporate a few more of those types of plays for him. Give him some easy bunnies to get him going.

NOTE: We shouldn't even be considering benching Young. But is it time to move to more of a PG platoon where Young and Lin split time evenly?

I posted his catch and shoot 3s percentages a fews days ago, he's shooting them at a 45% clip but isn't taking enough of them compared to dribble pull up 3s at 19% and twice as many.

Like you said, Pierce has to run plays for him specifically that gets him catch and shoot 3s otherwise he will gove having low attempts since the rest of the team as constructed rarely makes a play to allow him to do that on the fly. When other players handle the ball that's not a play they look for, part of that is also on Trae to move to get himself open for a potential shot.

Indeed.

It was your post I was referring to. And I agree it's on both Lloyd and Trae to improve his off-ball positioning.

Lin looks healthier, so even if we don't switch to a pure platoon, perhaps having Jeremy play alongside Young as a secondary ball handler could help.

(When DeAaaron Fox was going at Trae a couple of weeks ago, I was definitely thinking that playing Young off ball should already be a larger part of our offensive approach. If we draft RJ Barrett, Cam Reddish or Q Grimes next summer, I suspect it will be moving forward.)

Spoiler:
The Ringer had a nice write-up about this very topic earlier this year:

The Rookie Curve: Trae Young’s Success Will Depend on Perpetual Motion

Atlanta’s newest star-in-the-making won’t be able to avoid the Steph Curry comparisons, so he might as well lean into it. That means learning how to dominate opponents off the ball. That’s no easy task

Young has not had a teammate who will push him off the ball the way that Jeremy Lin will this season in Atlanta. Young had an incredibly high usage rate of 37.1, which would have led the NBA last season; what he didn’t have was another playmaker on his team. Young’s responsibility will have to decrease at least somewhat at the next level, if only to keep him healthy. While Linsanity has come and gone, he could make Young’s life easier next season by getting into the lane and kicking the ball out to him for open shots.

A huge part of Curry’s game in the NBA is playing off the ball, something Young rarely did in college. One story line to track in Atlanta next season is how much Young and Lin play together. It’s not as simple as just spotting up and waiting for the ball. Moving without the ball in the NBA, where bigger and stronger defenders grab and hold as much as they can get away with, isn’t easy. When Young didn’t have the ball this summer, he mostly stood in one spot and caught his breath. When he did try to move, he had trouble getting open.

Young’s elite shooting ability should make him a [solid] secondary option. He would be deadly when attacking closeouts, since opposing defenses won’t want to leave him open beyond the 3-point line. Young, like Curry, generates a lot of defensive attention, and setting back screens and cutting off the ball could open things up for his teammates...the Hawks can start that process by teaching him the right habits now.

I feel like Trae should sit with a "sore back" for a game or two. He's in a slump.

Now that Lin sucks much less, I think he should just play fewer minutes. Like I thought it was appropriate to play Lin down the stretch yesterday since Young was on the struggle-copter. I'd prefer that to sitting him outright.
