2018-19 Player of the Year Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by ardee » Thu Nov 22, 2018 6:37 am

Mods please sticky.

Last couple years we've just had it all year so why not just go with it.

I would currently go:

1. LeBron James (clearly still the best, his defense is back and he has the Lakers overperforming after the initial rough start)
2. Giannis Antentomoumpo (the only other superstar who has so far played almost all the games)
3. Stephen Curry (per game basis he might be the best player in the league but he's missed a bunch of games)
4. Kawhi Leonard (same, I think he's better than Giannis but missed games hurt him)
5. Anthony Davis (very high highs but has had a few bad games too)

6-10 would be Embiid, Jokic, Lowry, Lillard and Durant in some order.

This is the most wide open year I can remember. Right now I’d probably have Embiid at 1, but a lot will change.

Crazy deep year/ start when the reining mvp averaging 29/5/7/2.5 and 4 threes can’t get a mention.

He’s actually also the league leader in steals per game right now too.

But yeah these discussions aren’t super objective, Harden won’t get press until his team starts performing better and likely won’t get enough attention if he’s perceived as taking a step back even if his performance is still elite.

Isn't it always wide open at this point in the year? Unless its like 2012 style where there is only one real superstar ala LBJ, it's usually quite open ended before 1/4th of the season is done.

Gasol has to be the surprise of the season so far (at this level), turned back the clock with ease. Giannis would probably be my top pick as of now. Kawhi has not impressed me in Toronto, I'd have Lowry far ahead of him as of now. Lots of guys starting slow (LBJ, Harden, CP3, Westbrook, Gobert, Kawhi, Dray) for various reasons. Curry positioned to look really good if he can make a fairly quick return.
I bought a boat.

Right now I have no order, but their are 10 players playing like PoY candidates. Once some players fall down to earth and the good teams start winning we will see. It should be a fun year though.

Typically we discuss all awards here, no?

I think DPOY is interesting as some of the usual players: Gobert,Draymond, Roberson, Kawhi, Embiid don't seem like candidates at this point.

should Marc Gasol be the early favorite?

Steven Adams maybe.

Think MIP is the one that gets me this year. Fox, Sabonis, Vuc has been great, TJ Warren. Tons of guys. Deep rookie class but Doncic seems favored. DPOY has a few as well.

I knew I had to be missing someone else obvious. Thanks. Yeah he should definitely be in the conversation tho I wonder if PG's rep will siphon votes away like Bowen used to do to Duncan?

Also, is it too homerific for me to say Barea deserves at least a mention for 6MOY? I know his efficiency is poor and his defense is pathetic, but Dallas is .500 on the back of its bench as Luka is the only starter to not be a major negative and JJ is clearly the engine of the bench.

Is it possible for Derrick Rose to win MIP?

Gasol is DPOTY right now, but if Covington will continue to play at current level, then he is no 1. Since the trade Wolves have 2nd best defense (and are very close to being the best), while before were 2nd worse. How he transformed that team on defensive end is amazing.

Raptors are 7-1 without Leonard, all games on the road. It's also another season, when his team is better on defense without him.
