Mavs have to consider bringing DSJ off the bench, he’s struggled quite a bit lately imo.

*Up*

Played around with Dennis' shooting numbers a bit.

Turns out they pretty darn promising actually. Legitimate improvement almost all across the field according to nba.com so far:

From less than 8ft:

- Rookie year: 52.6% on 6.1 FGAs per game

- Sophomore year: 52.4% on 7 FGAs per game

From 8 to 16 ft:
- Rookie year: 22.3% on 1.6 FGAs per game

- Sophomore year: 45.5% on 1.8 FGAs per game

From 16 to 24 ft:

- Rookie year: 33.8% on 2.2 FGAs per game

- Sophomore year: 58.3% on 2.0 FGAs per game

From 24+ ft:

- Rookie year: 31.5% on 4.9 FGAs per game

- Sophomore year: 28.6% on 4.7 FGAs per game

Sources:

Sample size is obviously very small so far, but it's been a promising start within the three point line. He won't turn into Steph overnight but it's really cool to see how the numbers have shaken out up until now.

As a result from the improved midrange numbers + the one more FGA at the rim his overall 2pt FG% went up from 43.5% to 52.3%.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/smithde03.html

FT% also went up by nearly 6% (high 60s to ~ 75 now).

If we play around with the parameters a bit and change the shot distance from 8ft steps to 5ft steps then you atcually get an even more telling outlook on him. I just saw that.

Less than 5 ft:

- rook: 55.5% on 5.5 FGAs

- soph: 57.9% on 6.7 FGAs

5 to 9 ft:

- rook: 24.6% on 0.8 FGAs

- soph: 33.3% on 1.0 FGAs

10 to 14 ft:

- rook: 18.2% on 1.0 FGAs

- soph: 16.7% on 1.0 FGAs

NOW IT GETS FUN

==>

15-19 FT:

- rook: 30.4% on 1.6 FGAs

- soph: 58.3% on 2.0 FGAs :droop: :droop: :droop:

20 to 24 FT:

- rook: 35.1% on 2.7 FGAs

- soph: 36.4% on 1.8 FGAs

You proably only watched the last game? Honestly, he had a couple of really bad games, and it looked like he wasn't even trying (you could see it from his body language). Of course people overreacted, but it's not like it came out of nothing :)

Who's leading the Mavs in 3P%? That's unthinkable.
1.DFS 44.4%
2.Barea 38.3%
3.Dennis / Matthews 38.2%
4.Doncic 37.9%
5.Barnes 34.5%

That's ridiculous. But that's significant improvement for both Smith on roster.

DSJ is taking better(easier) and less shots this year. He has more assisted 2pts and 3pts shots. Meaning his shot selection is better this year. Luka is taking (too) difficult shots, only 50% of his 3 pointers are assisted. His shot selection has some room for improvement.

Going by RPM data so far:
http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/2/position/1

DSJ the worst of all our PGs.
Position 75/90 for all point guards.

Trae is 89/90 lol, go get those stats!!!!

Powell needs some love with 3rd best PF rating, but really, i put that down with having to play with JJ on the court at all times.

Barnes in a role of a spot up shooter is a very good player for the Mavs. Spot up shooting and occasional post-up works best for him, he can be very efficient.

A rather expensive role guy (DFS may be that guy to do that for half the price next year), but yeah, he's been doing fine --- one of the reasons of the win streak. It has also been interesting to notice that the Mavs have not been force feeding him and having him iso a lot. I feared that could happen to "justify" his pay.

Small sample but his catch and shoot frequency went from ~25% last year to ~35% this year and his 3point percentage improved to 42% on those this year. The biggest thing though --- small sample as always --- he went from having 22% to 8.9% in iso plays.

This team has been rolling, so it's still early to determine if this will be the norm, but it's noticeable that compared to last year the offense is much improved in the ball movement (DSJ isoed in ~19% of his plays, ~6% this year).

Here’s a question for you guys. If at the trade deadline and the Spurs are still sliding and decide they want to go into rebuild mode would you be willing to offer up DSJ/Wes for DeRozen?

No, he is not efficient enough.

In an ideal world, we'd be able to get someone like Bradley Beal or Middleton.

I'd be curious to know if people would take DeRozan in "for free". As in, if he was available to be absorbed into cap space, if people would want him. Something tells me that many would still say 'no' to that.

DeMar is putting career numbers and his overall impact for team is steel low.

Dennis against Houston played the most aggressive game he done all year , excelent on defence for a few games already and attacking the paint , shooting north of 35% for three. All that while adjusting to new role being 21 years old.

When you have just one ball handler even MVP great one like James Harden team steel struggles (like they are doing without Paul) , because you can take ball off him on some situation and forced the rolle players to make plays.

Let them develop , get used to each other and we could se more Houston type of games very soon..
