Re: The Mayor - Spencer Dinwiddie Thread
So wait, I thought because of some stipulation in the CBA he couldn't get more than about 4/$48, even in the summer?
The 4/$48 is only by December 8th? And if he makes it to free agency he could get anything up to the real max?

Re: The Mayor - Spencer Dinwiddie Thread
I don't think we should wait to the off season, he will be a UFA and he will most likely be gone because teams will definitely offer him 18M or more and I'm certain we won't match that. What if we strike out on all the stars? we can sign him for the 44M, which is a bargain, and if anything we can always trade for him for value in the off season. I don't want to lose him for nothing.

Yes, the 4/$47.5 is during the season. After July 1st, he can get up to a 25% max.

We don't have match rights unless Spencer wants to give us the opportunity to match/beat an offer.
I'm not sure about the legality of extending him & then trading him. It might be possible. The only restriction I have seen is that giving him the full 4 year, 8% extension would mean he can't be traded for 6 months. That would be prior to the start of the 2019 offseason, so it wouldn't be a big deal in theory.
The opposite is true as well. If we were to trade him now, he can't sign a 4yr, $47.5mil extension with his new team for 6 months. At that point, he'd just hit unrestricted free agency.
What's not clear is whether we can sign him to a 3 year, 5% raise contract ($33.5mil) & then trade him at some point this season. The 3/$33.5mil contract is his limit in an extend & trade.

I'm always a bit skeptical of this sort of loyalism in the NBA, but you guys know him better than I do.
So would you feel comfortable with offering him 20 million/year? Because I don't think it's unreasonable (if he maintains this kind of efficiency) for a franchise like the Suns who are desperate for a PG.
if we max 2 guys i dont care if we give him a billion a year. to me there are only 3 deisgnations:
under the cap: only matters if you are the max + under.
over the cap: once your over the cap overpay whoever you want as long as you avoid the tax
over the tax: get under as soon as possible, not sustainable
id give spencer whatever we can while avoid the tax.
i would laso lose ZERO sleep if he walked and ZERO ill will towards him. at the end of the day he isnt a superstar
Agreed. But I would love to keep him here especially if we land Kemba and say Tobias Harris.
Lets hope the Nets clear this up quickly. The best scenario for all parties is to wait until the offseason, let the Nets land whoever they can get, and then go over the cap to pay Dinwiddie more than what we can offer now. I think that would be worth waiting for, but maybe Spencer, who isn't stupid, just wants to lock down his first big pay day of his career (after seeing what happened to LeVert, who could blame him for wanting to just gain some security right away. I'd gladly take 12 mil a season lol).

Marks really needs a game plan for this off-season. If the plan is to let Dinwiddie and Russell potentially walk, we need to get SOMETHING for them. Working this hard to develop Dinwiddie only for him to leave would be terrible.

Re: The Mayor - Spencer Dinwiddie Thread
With Oladipo out indefinitely, I wonder if the Pacers would be interested in a deal centered around their 2019 1st for Dinwiddie. Not only would Dinwiddie help keep them afloat while Oladipo is out, but I think they'd like to lock up a player like him -- Thad, Bojan, Tyreke, Collison, Joseph, O'Quinn, Al Jeff are ALL up after this year. So, they have some work to do for next season.
Also, this would give us yet another 1st, to go along with Denver's, and our own. Gives us some ammo to make a trade for a player, or move up in draft.

Re: The Mayor - Spencer Dinwiddie Thread
Spencer Dinwiddie deserves to get paid, but I think its best for everyone for a change of scenery. The Nets are stuck. Its been 2 years of heartbreak losses, unfavorable calls late, some heroic moments yes, but the dejection of the team on the bench at the end of the game yesterday said it all. This team's dynamic is competitive, but something needs to change in order for this team to start closing and winning ballgames

Exactly what I'm saying. We can sign Din now for cheap and always trade him in case stars want to team up here. His value will still be high at 11M a year and we can definitely get something for him.

Yea what needs to change is that we need a star(s). Once we get one we will get all the ticky tacky foul calls and someone that can close a game with free throws. This is what it all boils down to, stars run this league, it is what it is.

This is not a win now team though, we're rebuilding. I don't know why anyone is surprised by the fact that we're a bottom 10 team.

Re: The Mayor - Spencer Dinwiddie Thread
I think the number is good for Dinwiddie.
4/47.5 is a reasonable contract for someone with his talents + age. We could have him during his best years for a good price.
Ultimately, does Marks believe Dinwiddie should be part of the core going forward?
Is giving Dinwiddie the contract going to mess up his plans for summer 2019 free agency?

They'd be stupid to let Dinwiddie walk in hopes of getting a Tobias Harris. He's been the best bargain contract in the league time to pay the man.

Wow. I think he's much more likely to get half that in the open market - a full MLE type offer (w/ PO final year). Good on the kid if he gets what you predict. I think he's a contract away from anything like that still - sign a MLE for three years, somewhere where he'd have a chance to start and prove he can lead a play-off team/contender.
