I don't think Pascal was a gamble. I think they were still using IBM Watson at the time. Pascal averaged 20/11 with decent efficiency and stocks, which is probably why Watson's decision maker likely labeled him as a top choice for his draft spot. His weaknesses were his age and the conference he played in.

Skal was a big gamble since he was trash in college, had zero outstanding skills outside of hitting open shots in practice, didn't have any outstanding draft measurements and looked really slow on his drives in draft workouts.

Gotta admit this is really fun to read AND

hopefully will show people that the draft is still a crapshoot
Pretty neat and on the fridge for the real fans:

The guy also has an insane work ethic which you can never fully predict in this day an age where these players become instant millionaires

Masai clearly saw his athletic potential. Really a great pick

Ooof, these early overreactionary posts did not age well lol. That's why this sport is so great, you never know which gem you pick up late in the draft. Trust Masai, believe in this city, and believe in yourself.

Um no.

I can name way more times when fans got it wrong, and the team was right than the opposite.

- How about when Raptor fans booed Stoudamire cuz they wanted Ed O'Bannon?
- How about when Knicks fans booed Porzingis?

I could go on and on and on....

That's incorrect statement - All you have to do is read the draft threads. Fans are correct way more than you think.

Masai or any GM for that matter have been wrong lots.

youre right and you're wrong. yes fans have often seem to have been 'right' and management 'wrong' but the reality is that neither is right or wrong. Both are making wild guesses. Sometimes the people fans and management pick with their wild guesses turn into stars and then the fans go around acting like they 'knew' and they were 'right', and sometimes, more often those players don't, in whcih case the fans trash the management for having been 'wrong'. But if you actually listen to real GMs talk frankly about drafting instead of RealGMs talking crap, then you will know that real GMs understand full well that it is a crapshoot and that who turns out to be a star and who turns out to be a bust is almost completely unpredictable. that's why the best players from any draft year are often picked 5th or 15th or even later. because nobody knows. everybody is guessing. fans and management. all we can know is that they look good compared to their young peers and they might turn into good NBA players. everything else is bs.

Passing twice on high-upside plays like Labissiere and Davis is disgusting

When a potential top-10 talent slides, you make the damn pick and worry about the rest later

Even the GODDAMN KINGS had the sense to pick up SKAL with the very next pick (28)...even tho he didn't work out for them either!

:banghead: :banghead:

And he got 12 and 1s. LOL

to be fair, around 5-6 of the And1's came after this thread was bumped up last year. (i suppose they wanted to remind me)

Lol at reading some of these past comments. Hindsight is 20/20, but some people were complaining that he had no athleticism when we drafted him!

I remember I wanted Skal with that pick - Is there a way we can find out if we posted on an old thread?

Siakam is a beast! Who knew...

I wanted Skal and I stand corrected. However, Siqkam’s motor was identified early. This to me is similar to Masai’s pick of the Manimal all those years prior. Solid work ethic. Good story. Excellent motor. Couldn’t shoot - but pascal has developed his shooting, unlike Manimal.
I believe in Masai.

Difference between Kenneth Faried and Pascal Siakam is that Siakam actually worked on his game to become better and realize his seemingly limitless potential while Faried was content to stay the course.

This thread is hilarious. By the 5th page you can see everyone with the hot takes are starting to talk themselves off of the edge.
Maybe the trick is to draft under the radar monsters who have good attitudes. Delon, Yak,spicy,Fred, Norm, OG all seem to be stand up guys that won’t cause problems.

Pascal has been a really unusual case.
I actually remember reading up on him before the draft and thought he sounded great. Sophomore with huge rebounding numbers and a great motor. I didn't know why he was talked about so little. Then I found out he was an older college player, so his ceiling didn't appear as high. Next Masai drafts him and I don't know what to think, but during the Raps first open gym that year I watched him outrun everyone including the point guards and defend anybody on the court. He stood out like a sore thumb because there was literally nobody, including DeMar, who could get past the kid.
Fast forward and now he's actually looking like a tremendously skilled offensive player who can defend every position. His shot has really started to come along and his biggest weakness is now rebounding which appeared to be his greatest strength. It's just weird. Great, but weird.

How much is Siakim getting paid next contract?

I feel like 20 mil per season isn't unreasonable if he improves a little more.

My only beef with pascal is who cuts a PB and J sandwich vertically? It’s either horizontal or diagonal the ****?

That’s why he reminds me of a late blooming Paul Millsap. Do it all forward that inhaled rebounds in college but wasn’t asked to do too much.
Once they refine their bodies a skill set they end up turning out pretty good.
I’m still waiting for the up and under after the spin move while drawing a foul.
