Tigers give High Schooler Rick Porcello 7.3 mil.

Post#1 » by Mr.Raptorsingh » Tue Aug 14, 2007 5:03 am

I wonder how Bud Selig feels about the Tigers giving this kid the highest signing bonus ever. Rick Porcello was the Tigers 1st rd. pick. He went towards the end of the 1st rd. mainly because of the signing issue.

I know Bud Selig does not want teams who pick lower in the draft to be giving top signing bonuses but this one is unbelieveable.

The 7.3 mil. is the highest signing bonus ever....at least that is what I think.

everyone knew he was gonna get this b/c he was a top 5 pitcher (maybe top 2) in the draft.

selig knows some kids will get huge signing bonuses (like porcello) i think he doesnt want players that dont deserve to be top 10 picks to get money like porcello.

That's ridiculous. Especially when Matt Harvey, who is better, wants around 2.5 mill.

And yet, the Tigers will be laughing when they have the top rotation in baseball in a few years.

**** Julio Lugo.

LOL at Matt Harvey being better than Porcello. Porcello is the best HS arm since Beckett.

Well worth it. It's a lot smarter to spend this kind of money on a great talent than on some replacement level free agents like some teams do. and I echo everything BG just said too.

Ryan Braun didn't even get that!!!
"The guy is an idiot," Pedroia said regarding Cabrera. "I dropped my bat. It kind of freaked me out. I was upset they took him out of the game. He is good to hit. He's 9-15. The guy [stinks]."

The best high school arm since Beckett wouldn't fall that far, I don't care what his demands were. He's good, but don't get carried away.

Signability (i.e him demanding too much money) is the only reason why he fell down that far.

Mark Prior says "I went to college and was not as good as Porcello coming out HS."

Maybe, and I admit to not following the draft a ton, but one would think if a kid was that good, someone would take a risk on him before 27th.

There's been a ton of really good high school arms since Beckett, so that's high praise. We'll see if he's that good soon enough.

Who was going to afford him before the 27th pick? The only teams that could afford him were the Angels, Mets, Red Sox and Yankees, and the Yankees are the only team that had a pick in the first round (at 30).

His pricetag was so high, that's the only reason he fell to 27.

You're probably right, but I'm just of the opinion that if someone is that good, you find a way to get him signed, small market or not. I'm sure there's a way they could of worked something halfway reasonable out.

And I hope this doesn't affect the Rays' negotiations with Price. A top of the rotation of dual lefties in Kazmir and Price is very inticing.
