Trae Young isn't in a shooting slump. He simply can't shoot.

I don't doubt that Trae can develop into a nice facilitating PG. Surround him with talent and his skills should play up. He can shoot, he's just going to need space. I do doubt that he's going to turn into a star. That is a problem for Schlenk.

If the best the Hawks / Schlenk can do with top three picks is bring in avg starters, then we will be rebuilding for nothing but more Hawks mediocrity

Have to agree with tbhawksfan here. They spent a 3rd round pick to get Trae and a future pick. The #3 overall in a deep draft and specifically Doncic or JJJ were the opportunity cost of our draft moves.

I would agree that he shoots too much for a rookie and needs to get his teammates involved more... but to say he can't shoot is false.

And that's coaching/player development.

He was given waaaay too much freedom and responsibility much too soon.

He shoots 37% from the field and 24% from 3’s.

He’s on a Kenyan Runner’s pace to obliterate the worst mark of effective field goal shooting of any player in history with a usage of 28% at 29 minutes per. Again, I don’t blame him, he’s playing as hard as he can. The decision to start him out the gate is almost as bad as actually drafting him.

One thing I’ve noticed is Trae isn’t getting set properly before going into his shooting motion. It seems like he’s trying to compensate for his lack of size. Even on catch and shoots, he’s not consistently squaring up with the basket.

Why are none of his threes going in? I am losing faith. I cant watch any more 0-7 from three, it is in insufferable.

The biggest disappointment for every NBA team in 2018-19

Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young's shooting

Image

The Hawks took a gamble on draft night by trading the rights of Luka Doncic to the Mavericks for the rights to Trae Young and a 2019 first-rounder -- the logic being that if Young and Doncic were close to equal, the extra draft pick would make the deal worth it. So far Doncic has been much better than Young, but that's expected given Doncic's professional experience. What wasn't expected, however, is that Young would struggle as mightily as he has from the 3-point line. He's shot 24 percent from deep, dead-last among players with at least 100 attempts.

Young has showcased brilliant playmaking and passing ability, even on a team without much scoring help around him, but the shooting has to be a concern 30 games into his career. Making the pill even more difficult to swallow is the fact that Doncic, whose 30 percent 3-point shooting in Europe raised red flags among some front offices according to our Brad Botkin, is hitting at a 36 percent clip since coming stateside. Not to mention that Doncic is helping the Mavs win, which could significantly devalue that 2019 first-rounder headed to Atlanta.

^Taurean Prince's defense has been more dissapointing for me.
