This might be one of the worst "nicknames" I have ever heard. And on top of that, a player needs to actually do something to earn a nickname.

You need to read weird Celtics Twitter to get it.

Haha, one thing I will never do is Twitter. Although I have an account but that was just to follow PSNH (now Eversource) about when my power would be back on in 2008 or 2009.

Why?

Because
1. What is a 'time lord'? I don't know and I'm not looking it up. Nicknames shouldn't leave most of the audience blank.
2. Does it have anything to do with his abilities or traits on a basketball court? Or just the fact that he missed a flight and a practice?
3. If the latter, is that really what we want to keep top-of-mind with this guy for the next 10 years or so?
4. Have we ever been a franchise of crappy/gimmicky nicknames?

If we want to slobber over nicknames that we think sound cool but have no substance, I'm telling you, we should get Lucky looking a lot more like

because that's a slippery slope.

Dr. Who ran from 1963-1989 and then again from 2005-present. That's 39 years of being on television and over 850 episodes airing in nearly every country in the world with broadcast TV. I wouldn't really call that leaving most audiences blank!

I watched some of the original Dr. Who when I was much younger. This name rings no bells. But thanks -- I've asked several times and no one's even bothered to say it's from Dr. Who. Or answer my other questions, which were

Because of the Dr Who universe they are referred to and refer to themselves as Time Lords.

It's a pun based on Dr Who

How is it a pun?

Err okay not a pun, poking fun.

Despite being a TimeLord Dr Who is known for arriving too early or too late.

I think if Danny wanted to use Lob, he could have at least gone with Rob Loblaw.

You are so wrong. Those aren't the coolest parts of bball, and Dr. Who is perennially cool.

New Nickname

Post#1452 » by stonehandluke » Sat Dec 15, 2018 3:20 am

Hi, guys --

I'm leaning towards "Space Lord", because the court's a different size when he's out there. He was way out of position, but caused a man to rush a three. He stole a rebound from his own team from the top of the key. He just covers a lot of horizontal and vertical. Binky! Binky Binky!

Yours,

I didn't even know you could change thread titles or I would've done so way earlier lol. Thanks to the mod who did it!

Anyways, no matter whether you like it, you can't choose nicknames, not as a player and not as a fanbase. They develop organically, and this one has and is bound to stick. Time Lord it is.

I don’t feel like nicknames should have to make sense, they should just happen. I heard he doesn’t even like it, but I still don’t care. I feel like timelord just happened and caught fire so why even question it. All aboard the Timelord Williams express, we goin places!! Get on the train or get the F outta the way!!

It's timeline, you don't get to choose your own nickname. It's gathered traction and like it or not that is what the public are rolling with.

Just the fact that there is this discussion about the nickname means something. I mean, are sports blogs and twitter lit up with discussions about Mo Wagner or Omari Spellman. Don’t think so. To have a big man picked late in the first round garner any attention like this is a good sign.

And since when did nicknames have to be good. Traditionally there were more of “badge of honor” ironically given to emphasize an odd character trait or personal flaw. Or a mistake made that the recipient has to transcend. It’s not like there are calling him Stinky. Time Lord sounds pretty cool and can be tied into his timing on blocks and defensive presence. “Time Lord blocks it back to the Jurassic!!!”

I actually like it, however, in the broadcast of the Atlanta game, Scal mentioned a nick name someone suggested (on Twitter?) that I like even better...
