the concept isn't bad. the problem IMO is using that concept for a big budget blockbuster. it's a huge gamble investing that much into an IP without widespread recognition. People know of it, for sure, but it's not something every 3rd or 5th person you ask on the street would know about.

I sorta understand where they're coming from, that maybe an interesting concept with some following and clever marketing would hook people into watching, but I would rather it be a smaller budget thing to hedge against various possible issues, like the script being a poor adaptation of the novel, or the acting being subpar, etc. Those can irrepably sink a blockbuster, and that's a much bigger loss than if the budget were smaller.

For me it seems like the studio has developed this under a similar umbrella as the Divergent series and Maze Runner series (YA big budget, despite the source novels probably being very different in theme, tone, plot). And those films didn't really do that well.
