Unsure. Evaluating the pick/trade as a whole, I'm right on the fence...leaning disapprove pending where the Dallas draft pick falls.
Trae is an exciting prospect with a ton of potential, but I would have been happier and more comfortable selecting Luka. A late 1st thrown in is not enough to persuade me otherwise.

I tried to encourage myself after a good overall floor performance against the powerful PG duo of Jaylen Brunson and J.J. Barea. “Okay, he’ll gain some confidence, he’ll build off this” I told myself, in a loss mind you.

Back to reality, after a cool -17 our prized lotto pick now has the second worst Win Shares in the league behind Josh Jackson (another sparkling Top 5 pick). Problem is all of the other rotation players in the Win Share cellar have some semblance of defensive value outside of some undrafted Bulls stud named Antonio Blakeney, who bests Trae’s effective FG shooting by .66. Awesome.

Approve. He’s the guy I wanted the Hawks to draft @ 3. My expectations were that he wouldn’t nearly be as productive as he is. I expected him to be a better shooter though. I knew he would be bad defensively, but not worst defender in the league bad. Overall,he’s exceeded what I expected from a rookie PG.

Trae's ultimate value will not be appreciated until the Hawks have better players around him, because his biggest value comes in his court vision and passing. You have to put guys around him that can make shots, but you also have to insulate him defensively. This is easier to do at the point guard position than it is at the post positions, which is why Marvin Bagley will likely never be more than a rotational big in the NBA as he lacks both the defense and perimeter shooting ability to make his athleticism work.

I am rooting for him, I want him to be great. But he can't throw it in the ocean. He is on a historically bad shooting slump.

I know you “have a dog in the fight”, but Bagley isn’t as bad at either defense or shooting to justify that projection of journeyman big. Truthfully, he has been playing pretty good for a rookie big coming off the bench. He, too, needs to hit the weight room like most 19 year olds playing against the best athletes in the world. He hasn’t been as good (also hasn’t been as good of a team FWIW) as JJJ defensively, but he is still looking like he will be the better offensive player in the long run.
