2019 Packers Off Season Thread - Cut Day Saturday

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Fri Dec 14, 2018 5:19 pm

Given that the season is essentially over and there have been some articles on the offseason decisions that will be forthcoming I'm going to start the offseason thread a little early. Human posted the following in the Bears thread, we'll roll with it here as a starting point.

humanrefutation wrote:Pete Dougherty has some thoughts on who's gone after this season:

He thinks that Clay might come back on a reduced number.
Cobb's gone.
Perry's gone.
Graham's gone.
Bulaga's gone.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I like the idea of Clay coming back at a reduced number but I feel like he may feel like trying somewhere else.

Perry is probably gone.

Bulaga you'd think is gone, but assuming he's relatively capable, would you cut him? I'd maybe draft his backup because I'm not sure you'll do better on the free agent market for $7 million.

Graham I could go either way. I'm not sure I want to cut him for 50 cents on the dollar since we'll have lots of holes to fill. I don't mind keeping an OK tight end at a high price tag instead of paying him $5 million not to play for us.

Perry and Graham are in the same boat. You dont open up enough cap space to make cutting them worth while. Not a fan of passing the buck down the road with the June 1st cuts

Clay could be back at reduced number. Cobb also. He is more likely to get a quality offer from someone else though.

Bulaga will probably be back. Draft his replacement and if the replacement ends up being starting quality earlier then expected Bulaga simply becomes a high prices backup on the line providing quality depth.

Theyll have cap space. They dont need wholesale cleaning. Some of these guys will be back. Some wont.

Graham might be worth the 5M you save cutting him. Perry is probably not worth the 3.5M. No way Cobb and Clay are back at even close to their numbers. I wonder if Bulaga could make the move inside.

They really need to give PT to Tonyan these last 3 games. I'd like to see if he's a potential contributor next season. Kendricks and Lewis are crap.

The reason you cut Perry is [I'm not a cap expert] but you get more savings in 2020 if you do it in 2019, right?

It's not just the cap either. Those roster spots need to be upgraded (we can hope....) and put to use.

If you tell me they can find 4-5 pass rushers better to put on the roster for 4-5 million or less I'd be in agreement. Otherwise you still are able to use the guy for depth and cut him next year.

With Cobb, Graham, Bulaga, and Matthews the wear and tear of mileage is showing and Perry can't stay healthy long enough to help. Their best days are behind them, so the Packers need to move on... Even at the risk of some of their replacements not working as well as hoped.

I know we are eager to shed large salaries, but you don’t cut someone unless you know you can use that money to upgrade the team at the same position or another position of greater need.

The Pack is bogged down by not getting the maximum return on its resources. Getting the highest return is the mark of the most talented rosters. The process of redeploying resources can happen in just one off-season but more likely in 2 or 3. The Pack need to clean house of large salaries of veterans who no longer play anywhere near the level when the contract was signed. The FO started the process last season with Jordy. No reason not to go all out this off season.

CUT - Matthews, cobb, bulaga perry, graham, spriggs,

Matthews doesn't want to play Inside or drop in coverage as much as he did the last 2 years. He leaves the Pack to play with a team that will use him as outside pass-rusher and also pay him more $$.

Cobb – Young guys like MVS and St Equa should play ahead of him. Plus Pack may snag a WR in FA or draft. MAYBE IF he took big pay cut and did PR/KR. But Pack cannot afford to keep 2 return specialists with both taking WR roster spots. Davis is younger and his PR success is more current.

Bulaga - just too injury prone therefore unreliable - Oline needs to build synergy between them - keeping bulaga just screws that up again next season with missed games. Even if Bulaga stays relatively healthy the Pack only delays the inevitable. Pack needs to “tackle” the right side now.

Perry - he could have the 2nd great year of his 7-8? year career or he could miss his typical 12 games. Let the chips fall where they may and get someone who actually plays.

Graham – He might get a little better for one season -maybe - until the wheels completely fall off. Let’s not drag this out.

Spriggs – Will he pull a Fackrell and actually show a pulse?

NEEDS:
If your going to beat a good QB – a good pass rush is #1.

Edge Rushers//OLB - 2 - Draft top 15 guy - name skips me at this moment -Trade a 3rd to move up if necessary. Plus spend Matthews $$ on FA IF any worthy are available.

It had better not be able to be said that the Pack did not give Rodgers enough weapons.

TE - Needed more than WR imo. Guy who can also block some. Tough position for rookies to impact 1st year - but do not want to keep signing downward vets - Gronk? We had the answer in Gates and TT got cheap. Spend Graham $$ for FA IF any worthy are available. Also draft 4th for devlopment with Tonyon

WR –Sign the best, youngest, (least crazy) that can be had for Cobb $$.

Pack has GOT TO PROTECT Rodgers. This means finding solid starters for right side and a reasonable quality back up LT.

RT starter – A draft deep in OT with LT’s usually off the board first means Orlean's 1st pick will likely yield a rookie RT who can step right into a starting role. IF not Sign veteran who can play RG or RT for Bulaga $$ IF any worthy are available.

RG/ starter - either or both Justin McCray & Lucas Patrick could blossom into a starter or stagnate? If both don't cut it move vet FA RT to start here but my $ says one of them will step up. Maybe last draft's 5th rd pick will finally join the team.

LT backup – Trade a 5th & 7th picks for an older veteran who still has a year in his tank..
I see OL like this.

Bahktiari – Taylor – Linsley – vetFA1 – First
vetTrade – Patrick – McCray – McCray – vetFA1

After resourcing the passrush – take another look at secondary-

CB - I really like King but Pack cannot count on him until he shows he can put together a full season healthy – Draft 2nd IF any worthy are available And sign Breeland who proved he can produce TO’s. Definetly keep King and give him time to get healthy – not like Heyward whom we all learned to not throw the towel in too soon. Last season’s ridiculos injuries proved you can never have too many good DBs.

FS & slotCB- Is Williams gonna stay at FS or play the slot? Jackson is not an Outside CB - does he take the slot or FS. Some feel Alexander is best suited for slot but I like his ability to play the other teams best receiver. I see the secondary this way

OCB - Alexander / Brown
OCB - King / Breeland / 2nd
Slot - Williams / Jackson / 2nd
SS - Jones / Brice
FS - Jackson / William / Breeland / Greene

TO RECAP ROSTER REBUILD

FREE AGENCY
Edge – matthews$
TE – graham$
WR – cobb$
RG/RT – bulaga$

TRADEvet
5th & 7th for former starter LT now backup

DRAFT
1st=Edge
1st=RT
2nd=CB
3rd= used to trade up in 1st rd for Edge
4th=TE
5th=traded for vet backup LT
6th=DL
7th= traded for vet backup LT

Packers 2019 Master Plan

Matthews and Cobb on short cheap deals.............2 years $10 mil each
Kendricks/Lewis on short cheap deals.................2 years $5 mil each
WIlkerson...................................................1 year $5 mil
Ryan.........................................................1 year $3 mil
Breeland....................................................3 years $18 mil

Cut Nick Perry now.

Spend your draft capital on Pass Rushing (2), Offensive Line (2) Safeties (1) and Defensive-Line (1) for a majority of your picks.

If you can make the above deals happen, I think you need too. It shores up a lot of holes with capable veterans that can still play. We use free agency and draft to fill the rest of the holes like offensive line and linebacker. I think the cap would leave us to sign 1 or 2 players.

No one wants to hear it re: Rodgers but it appears they've made the fatal mistake of paying a player for past production. He's still a good player, but for him to justify that contract he has to be the Godgers that it's quite possible he's no longer capable of.

Yeah and there was no reason to give him that contract. Two more years under control with the franchise tag after basically takes him to near retirement or at least an age where he isn't going to be able to get the contract we gave him.

We have two first rounders and have a lot of needs but I'm fine drafting a QB with one of them if Gute thinks he could be a successor. Kizer isn't that guy.

I'm gonna be really annoyed when they win the last two games. That's probably a difference of 10 draft slots right there.

It’s crucial to sit Rodgers these past two games and let him start healing. We must lose these games and we will if Kizer is starting.

Nothing is going to be solved unless Aaron plays like himself. We have need for a #2 receiver, pass rush, safety, and a lot of O-line.
