The RingerWho Will Be the NFL’s Next Passing Yards King?
Drew Brees just broke Peyton Manning’s record for career passing yards—so naturally, it’s time to figure out who’ll eclipse the Saint’s mark
Monday night, Drew Brees became just the 10th quarterback in NFL history to hold the career passing yards title. With Brees now the NFL’s passing yardage king, it’s time to look ahead and ask: Who will be the next quarterback to break the record?
The Favorites
Matt Ryan (43,397 yards, in his 11th season)
Career Passing Yards Per Game: 266.2
Estimated Games to Break Record: 118 (7.4 seasons)
Estimated Age to Break Record: 40.6
If I had to bet on one player to be the next passing yardage leader, my money would be on Ryan. The 2016 MVP has missed just two games in his career, and if he continues to play at the rate he has over his 11 seasons, he’ll break the passing yards record by the end of the 2025 season. He’d be over the age of 40 then, but seeing as that’s just a little more than seven seasons away, he has the quickest path to breaking the record that’s still realistically within a player’s expected career length.
Things will look even rosier for Ryan if he’s able to pick up the pace, which he (along with just about every other quarterback) has done this season. Ryan’s thrown for 320.2 yards per game through his first five contests, which will be by far the highest mark of his career if he maintains that pace; it’s a full 11 yards per game better than his MVP season. If Ryan starts turning in seasons like this one, he’d break the record in a little more than six seasons, when he’ll be 39.

Yahoo Sports24. Atlanta Falcons (5-9, LW: 27)
I’ve said this in this space before but it needs to be repeated: It’s almost impossible to have a quarterback as productive as Matt Ryan this season and still have a terrible record. Ryan is on pace for 4,922 yards, 34 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 107.6 passer rating. No quarterback in NFL history, with a minimum of four starts, has ever posted a 105 rating on a losing team.

Re: Is Matt Ryan in the midst of a Hall of Fame career?
The AthleticEnjoy Matt Ryan and Julio Jones while you can
Ryan and Julio Jones have formed quite the dynamic duo during their playing days together. Despite the way the season went, Jones managed to go for 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns. It marks the second time in his career that he has led the NFL in receiving. Jones has been a consistent force and model teammate during his time with the Falcons.
Jones recorded 100 yards in 10 games this year, which broke his own franchise record. At the age of 29, Jones is still very much in the prime of his career. While it took Jones eight games to score his first touchdown, he ended up making up for that in the final nine games.
Ryan, meanwhile, also had one of his best seasons statistically. His year ended with 4,924 yards, 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. To compare, in his MVP year in 2016 Ryan threw for 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Ryan and Jones will go down as two of the greatest players in franchise history when it is all said and done. It’s certainly a shame that these two players’ seasons, spectacular on the stat sheet, will end without a playoff appearance.

I wouldn't call it a shame. Call it what it is: empty stats. I don't blame Julio or Matt really. It was a crappy offense that only worked against crappy defenses.
Maybe we'll get lucky and get an OC with some creativity and guts but with Quinn in charge i think it'll be more of the same. Predictable football with plenty of talent to look good on paper and in the stat sheet but little to show for it.

Re: Is Matt Ryan in the midst of a Hall of Fame career?
Matty Ice needs an offensive HC to stick with him for the rest of his career -- a la Sean Payton and Drew Brees.
The Athletic2019 Quarterback Tiers: Fifty-five coaches and executives rank the NFL starters
Tier 2
A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.
Tier 1 votes: 13 | Tier 2 votes: 39 | Tier 3 votes: 3
Ryan got 13 top-tier votes, more than double the total for the rest of the second tier combined, but with the Falcons missing the playoffs four times in the past six years, most voters had a hard time pushing Ryan into the top tier. Some feel as though he’s prone to the costly turnover.
An offensive coordinator thought there was a case for Ryan as a 1, but he thought spotty performance in big games made the case less convincing.
“He was on his way to being a major one if Kyle Shanahan had stayed (as offensive coordinator),” a GM said. “The coordinator changes he has gone through have led to some inconsistencies. He has a chance now with Dirk Koetter. I’m not as scared of Ryan in pure pass, but when he gets going, he can carry a team.”

Re: Is Matt Ryan in the midst of a Hall of Fame career?
The AthleticWhat we learned: The Falcons are wasting a season of Matt Ryan’s prime
Through the multiple failures the Falcons put forth against the Arizona Cardinals, especially during the first half of Sunday’s game, Matt Ryan was nonetheless brilliant. Outside of untimely turnovers, Ryan has played well for most of this season. His game against Arizona was the best he has had this year.
At 34 years old, Ryan is still very much in the prime of his career. And that’s what makes a fifth loss in six games that much harder to stomach. After reaching Super Bowl LI, and being so close to bringing Atlanta a championship, this team has taken quite a few strides backward. Yet Ryan hasn’t taken a step back whatsoever.
For the season, Ryan has completed what is a career-best — to this point — 72.1 percent of his throws. He has totaled 2,011 yards and 15 touchdowns, although a lot of the yards have come while his team has been forced to play from behind. But if Ryan continues at this rate, he will wind up surpassing career highs in yards and touchdowns.
Ryan, who has only missed two starts in his career, has taken Atlanta to the playoffs six times. Prior to 2008, the Falcons had been to the postseason a combined eight times in 42 years. With Ryan, the Falcons have enjoyed the best decade of football in team history. In Ryan’s six postseason trips, Atlanta made it to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl. He won the NFL’s MVP honor in 2016, as well.
This season has the makings of being another wasted opportunity for Atlanta with Ryan still in the prime of his career.
That’s something that shouldn’t sit well with anyone at team headquarters in Flowery Branch.

Man, Matty Ice is a single 4th quarter collapse away from being a surefire, first ballot Hall of Famer.
That hurts.
Congrats to the 2016 MVP

Matty gets plenty of **** from fans.Jamaaliver wrote:
Management hasn't provided him with the best OLine over the years and he has taken a beating for it.
We also blew his chances at a Super Bowl during an epic season.
While do I feel sorry for him at times I realize his days are numbered. Whenever he decides to call it a career I don't believe he's going to be a Falcon.

The Falcons' failures are the sole fault of Matt Ryan.
Falcons have been on the decline ever since Ryan signed his $150 million contract. Because of Ryan's selfishness, the Falcons have not been able to improve their defense and OLine.
Brady only gets paid $10 million per year, Ryan gets paid $30 million. No $100 million QB has ever won a Super Bowl. With that much cap going to one player, Ryan needs to produce high enough to over compensate for the Defensive players the Falcons lost and were not able to sign over the year.

Tom Brady made $25 million this past season with Tampa Bay. He will come closer to $30m after bounces for winning the Super Bowl.atlantabbq99 wrote:The Falcons' failures are the sole fault of Matt Ryan.

This site says $28m for Tom.

Re: Is Matt Ryan in the midst of a Hall of Fame career?
Extending Matt Ryan's contract may be the Falcons' best option
Matt Ryan has been a polarizing figure in Atlanta for almost his entire career. Even after 14 seasons, there seems to be a 50/50 split within the fan base on the perception of Ryan’s tenure with the Falcons.
Considering how much the team’s talent level has declined in recent years due to salary cap constraints, the 36-year-old quarterback’s minor decline isn’t exactly a surprise. This isn’t to say Ryan is playing bad or has been the one holding the team back, but general manager Terry Fontenot and the front office have been in salary cap damage control since taking over for the previous regime.
NFL teams were given a potential salary ceiling of $208.2 million. This is before the 2021 cap rollover, in which the Falcons will have $1.2 million added to their 2022 total. So, taking into account the amount of rostered players (30), the dead cap from the Julio Jones trade ($15.5 million), and the voided year of Dante Fowler ($4.6 million), Atlanta only has about $13.2 million to get to a roster count of 51 players. The cap hit of Fowler will simply switch from active to dead money.
