Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Cryp
I've just kept buying (mostly) index funds in my 401k. For my personal investments it's been a challenge. Everyone spends time figuring out what and when to buy a stock but it's just as important to try to figure out when to sell, hold, or buy more. I have a couple of stocks where, in hindsight, I should have sold and taken the profit. But I held and now I'm under water. I think they'll rebound but I'm not buying more. I usually don't hold much cash but I have more than usual.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

After you guys posted that story I clicked on the link and it took me to that story where the CEO is sitting there in jeans and t-shirt telling people free checking and we'll pay you 3.00% per year interest. The whole thing reminded me of some of those dot.com companies that went bust or Madoff or Enron.
None of it passed the smell test.

Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
Thanks for starting this thread midranger. I've enjoyed following along with what others have been doing this past year so I'll give my story.
One stock that had a nice year that I didn't see mentioned earlier was WWE. I have always been an index, sector, or targeted date fund investor, but just one time I decided to gamble a little on an individual stock because a) I enjoyed the product, which was essentially a global monopoly, and b) at the time they were paying $0.36 per share quarterly in dividend on shares that were bouncing between 9 and 13. And they were sitting on a ton of cash and no debt, so I figured the dividend was safe for a while. I was thinking of it more as an income than value stock.
So way back in post-crash 2008/early 2009, I bought 1300 shares over the course of about 4 months. Average cost was somewhere between $11~12. Then I was buying/selling a couple hundred shares here and there but no big gains or losses through early 2011 when the dividend was cut to $0.12 quarterly per share and I made my last sale to leave myself with a little under 600 shares.
When this year began they were trading in the low 30s, but they cashed in big on their new TV deals, signing for about $4 billion total just in the US over the next 5 years. Apparently the analysts didn't see that coming, because it shot up after that, getting into the mid-90s at one point. I sold about a quarter of what I had remaining when it was climbing past 85, missing the very top but still up on the current price, which has been in the low to mid 70s most of the last month. Now sitting with about 450 shares that I'll probably hold until retirement (me or Vince, whichever comes first.)

Here's something that might be of interest to pot investors. When it comes to doing your due diligence about investing, as Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, it's always something.

True story, as a child I used to hold my breath while we were driving on I94 down by the (I think) Marquette / Courthouse area because the smell of what I believe was Yeast( I could be mistaken but I am sure some you know what I am referring to and can correct me). Very distinct odor, guessing from the Breweries but I am not certain. To this day, when I drive by that area, I miss that smell.
As for the fine people of Sonoma, pushing commercial growers out might appease them in the short term, but when loss of local revenues and jobs from pushing out growing come to fruition, I'm sure they will (eventually) miss that smell.

I always liked that smell and kind of looked forward to it when driving by on I-94.

This was being grown illegally so it really has no bearing on legally grown investments that are exchange traded.
The story is interesting. My neighbors were growing a (one) plant and we could smell it quite easily. I can see this becoming an issue from a residential regulation standpoint. Cities will need to determine clearer rules and regulations.

Same thing happens in new developments in the exurbs of Milwaukee where someone in Hartland builds a house next to a farm and complains when the farmer lays manure.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.
Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

A fast-growing neighborhood on Milwaukee's near south side with new restaurants and costly condos is located a stone's throw from the state's largest sewage treatment plant — and its unpleasant odors.
Walker's Point is the only city neighborhood that can boast all three major rivers — Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic — flow around its borders. It is cheered as a walkable and bikeable environment that draws people outdoors.
As sure as some people moving to rural properties eventually complain of manure smells from the third-generation farm down the road, some of the residents who have moved into Walker's Point in recent years are questioning why sewage odors from the 1920s-era treatment plant on Jones Island invade their space.

This stuff is hilarious. Another one is complaining of traffic for a few weekends a year after you move to Candy Cane Lane neighborhoods.

Where I used to live there was a new development of condos and apartments built within a shopping/restaurant/entertainment area. Residents would show up at city council meetings demanding more green space/dog parks in the development. Stupid
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

In my opinion, the best way is to find crypto with a nice potential and to figure out which stock exchange offers more profitable conditions. Then you should invest in this crypto and get profit. Everything genial is pretty simple

Market taking another whipping. I have a chunk of cash in both my 401K and regular account. It's foolish to try to time the market but I'm not sure at what point I'll start buying.

What makes you guys think we have hit bottom? Rumors the FED is planning on raising interest rates in March 2019 again, it makes no sense but it doesn’t look good if they do.

I have no idea if it's at the bottom. It's impossible to predict. At some point you jump back in, knowing it may still go lower before it rises. The flip side is waiting too long and paying more. It's an inexact science definitely.
I'm getting a kick seeing all of these "experts" popping up crowing about how they predicted this when virtually all of them have been predicting this for years.

Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
Interesting theory that some money managers/funds will want to lock in any gains they might already have in order to window dress their performance for 12/31 year end reporting. The idea being that you'll see less new cash deployed here these last four trading days of the year, meaning prices won't recover just yet.
If you subscribe to this theory, you'd want to buy into the market before 12/31 with a belief that a lot of pent up cash will roar back in on January 2nd.

Don't care about rock bottom at all (MD is right, impossible to predict). For us, it's just a good time to buy.
