It doesn’t happen often. And it hasn’t happened in awhile. Maybe KD? Definitely Kobe and James. Shaq. KG maybe. Every once in awhile there’s a player that raises the bar and leaves you in awe with their natural gifts. Even less often there’s a player that has those things, plus a drive to impose himself. My biggest knock on James is that the drive just wasn’t quite at the highest level. Physically dominant. But there’s been a few times where he wasn’t the most desperate guy on the floor.
I believe this is the generational talent. I think this is the one that changes the way we watch the game. Changes the way children play. Right off the jump he’s too much to handle in the nba. He’s going to out run, out jump, and over power a majority of the players in the league right now. And for the few that can keep up with him, I think this is the player that takes it as a personal challenge. And says “oh yeah, well top this”.
I never believed we’d be in a position to draft him. We’re not bad enough. And we’re not that lucky. I think we’ll be fairly close but we’re going to have to come out of pocket. The question is should we and how much is too much?
If it’s me I’m not screwing around. At all. I’m going to get this kid. Even if it means erasing what we’ve collected up to this point. Or even setting us back a couple of years. I don’t care. Either get this dude, or spend another 10 years fantasizing of getting this type of player. I’m personally fed up with pretending. Pretending that the players we have are better than they are. Pretending that the top player is clamoring to sign with us in free agency. I’m just going to make this happen and live with the results.

Great take.
I don't agree exactly, but great take.
My concern is the toxic NY culture of overpaying for high-expectations with no patience whatsoever. Dude better be all that and then some or he'd get eaten alive here, especially if Mills steps in with a Carmelo/Marbury/Curry/Bargnani type trade to move up. Those kinds of expectations have proven to be absolutely toxic time and time again, and I wouldn't wish them upon anyone. If anyone could ruin the career of a sure thing, it's the New York Knicks under James Dolan.
I think being that it’s a rookie makes it a little different. We tend to over pay for small windows of opportunity. Then hang on too long. To me a typical move would be to try to get a player like this 8 years into his career. Have a 5 year window but with little else to surround that player with. Obviously it’s a risk no matter what.
As far as the culture it’s also a valid concern. One thing I worry about is that he’s so big at such a young age. What happens when that mature weight sets in? If he’s a party guy I can see him getting fat. Obviously that type of personality in nyc could be a disaster.
I don’t think that’s going to be a problem with him. But I’m really not sure either. Who knows how he behaves when exposed to that lifestyle. Again there’s that risk. Just my personal hunch. I have a feeling he rises above that.
For me it’s that competitive drive. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen that. Its definitely been awhile since we’ve had it here. Timmy has a little bit. But physically is limited in what he’s capable of doing. I’ve seen some flashes from KP too. But to see it in a young man right out the gate gives me chills. Add that he’s a physical phenomenon. And who knows what the limits are.
I totally understand being skeptical of making a power move. We all have the right to feel that way after all we’ve been through. I’m usually not on board with crazy moves. And would prefer patience. But there’s something about this young man that makes me feel like there’s no better starting place.
Be glad I’m not the gm man. Because I’m going to do what ever it takes. Even if it means having to take a few years to recover. There’s plenty of time with a young man like this. Hopefully we just get lucky and hit the lottery.
