Re: 2019 Draft Discussion
Ja Morant goes up against #7 Auburn today in about a half hour, most likely the best test he'll have all season.

How did he play overall? I take it you watched the KU/ASU game? What happened there? I know ASU is pretty good...only ranked PAC12 team...only one even getting any votes in both polls.

Kansas played really small down the line and put the super productive twin/brother too close to the basket, so he didn't get the ball. ASU had some clutch bad midrange contested shots from their #1 and he didn't miss a single one. Game
First win against a top ranked school since 1981.

We want Tre Jones, great facilitator and a pretty good defender. Perfect fit next to Booker and I believe he is exactly what we need on this roster
He is projected late first round so if we were able to trade the Bucks pick and our early second rounder for him, it would be perfect

I like him, he definitely showed up in a tough game. He'll need to put on some weight, but he's really athletic. Not too good of a shooter, but he has good court vision, finishes around the rim well, and attacks the paint hard. Needs to work on his decision making and bring more intensity on defense though.

Do you think you'd rank him in the top 5 in the draft class?

Re: 2019 College Basketball and Draft Discussion
Morant is solid. Knows how to force contact, absorb it and finish. Good to great quickness and absolutely elite ball-handling. When i say elite i mean Francis/Iverson/Irving/Walker level. That alone enables him to create separation and space to hit his teammates in a variety of angles. Rebounds pretty well and appears to be at least average defender overall - lacks fundamentals (like positioning) but has very quick hands and above average lateral speed. Outside shooting is fairly unimpressive, but 80% from the charity stripe on high volume is encouraging. Form is not broken, although a little unconventional. Prone to forcing plays and attempting wild things on the court which causes quite a few turnovers.
I still think Garland was far superior prospect because of his elite shooting, always under control play and overall offensive polish, but now that he tore his meniscus i'm pretty wary of selecting him in the lottery. It's a huge bummer for me, i liked Darius so much as a player and thought he'd be a perfect answer for our PG spot going on. But who knows, maybe a guy like Morant is a gift from heaven.
If we can't grab Kemba, then sticking to the draft is the only right thing to do. Impatience is still our biggest enemy long term.

Wish we had a mid-late first because Jontay Porter would be a nice stretch 4 for us.

He plays a lot like Westbrook but probably out of necessity for Murray State. If his shooting were better he'd be top five no question.

Re: 2019 College Basketball and Draft Discussion
Serious question, why are a lot of people (mostly in other threads) hyping up Bol Bol as the Suns’ future PF? To me he’s a C through and through, as is Ayton. Unless he has Porzingas level coordination and shot creation I hate the fit. And now a foot issue? Avoid at all costs for me.
Morant is someone who I am willing to take a gamble on. Looking around the league, most of the great PGs are getting pretty old. I think it’s worth it to possibly grab a PG prospect who can join the ranks of Fox, Young, and Jamal Murray as the next great young point guard in the league.

I would only want Bol Bol if he played C, and alternated with Ayton. I wouldn't play them together much (if at all), but they have such different strengths as he is shooting 52% from 3 and averaging 2.7 bpg and is an extremely solid defender. Just looking at numbers, he appears to be a perfect modern C. Would just be a contrast. If they did play together, Ayton would make more sense at PF with his DFG% solid on the perimeter and him sticking with his man would be easier, but you really don't want either chasing around PFs much, particularly with so much small ball.
It just depends on where we draft and who is available. With Ayton it might not make a whole lot of sense to take him (though good C depth and one who brings D and shooting can't hurt). There just don't seem to be any PFs who can shoot, block shots and play great D, and only one PG...though he's been shooting terribly from deep..could be in large part due to a lot of attention though.
I don't know what my board would look like at the moment. It's still too early...but his numbers are impressive across the board.

Kyrie would be a nice acquisition. Too bad he would destroy our cap space. And he probably won't come here

Anyone have thoughts on PJ Washington? Tankathon has him mocked to us at #31. 7'3'' wingspan is nice.

I'm fine with that, if we feel that we have our core/scorers with Book/Ayton/TJ. Good rebounder, good shotblocker, great wingspan (for he is not that tall), good athlete seems like his body could fill out nicely, not a terrible shoother either, (so far) he raised his shoothing % and efficency from last year. If he continues this he might even slip into first round.
Seems like he could be a fine role player (5th-8th man) with a bit of luck in the right system - so again, if we feel that we're "set" with our scoring stars and we are hunting for energetic/useful roleplayer-type he should fit right in.

Re: 2019 College Basketball and Draft Discussion
Starting to buy in to the hype w Ja Morant.
He's crazy athletic and finishes well by the rim. He's got the handles to get there. He rebounds very very well for a point guard. He can run plays, finish layups, and make accurate passes with both hands too, at a level very rare for a guy his age. And speaking of age, he only turned 19 in August, which is only a month or two difference from how old Ayton was a year ago.
His jumper is a work in progress for sure. In the half court his form looks inconsistent and very flick-y at times. Thing is that when he slows it down at the line his form looks much more solid.
Another weakness would be defense. Hes another guy that gets a lot of steals but through risky reaching and ends not being as impactful as those steals would imply. Still, he looks like hes 6'4 (idk why hes always listed at 6'3 bc that's the tallest 6'3 guy I've seen on tv - maybe his growth spurt threw some numbers off?) And he's super quick, so he looks to have the size/speed to defend a lot of nba point guards. Also worth noting is that his ridiculously impressive vertical leap allows him to block shots way more than most point guards. He's averaging .6 blocks a game I think. He also rebounds really really well for his position, which is a nice bonus.
Overall, it's only the beginning of the season, so I want to take it slow and be careful not to allow Ja's blazing start to leave an ingrained impression on me. Auburn and Alabama were tests that he passed w flying colors for now, but his continued play towards tournament time will be very important in determining his value. For now though, he's reminding me two of the best bigger point guards to have emerged in recent drafts; mostly De'aaron Fox and Shai. It even seems like he's shooting better at the rim than those two, which is encouraging despite being against lesser competition. Let's see how it goes, but the hype is definitely real and justified for now.
