Re: Trade Thread: Armchair GMs welcomed
I would trade Portis and Blakeney for him in a heartbeat. Or Holiday... I think DSJ is one of those players that is going to start shooting the ball well. Like Gimme said, he has a smooth natural feel to his shot and he just looks like a guy who is going to turn 32% from 3 into 38-40% in a year or two.
I also agree with RealEast, the last couple times I've seen him play healthy, he was impressive on defense. For sure pesky and making things difficult for opposing G's and wings.
Honestly I would do that deal and I would move Lavine for the best deal, which should be a decent haul.
Go ahead and laugh but come back to this one again in two years...... just saying. I'll take the guy who has actually shown me more on both ends and more of an IQ, honestly. If you read Gimme's post, he could be talking about Zach (you could replace the names) for almost the entire time and it would be just as on point.

Hell, his FG% is 40.3!! That's beyond atrocious. Yeah, he's been a bit better this season, but that's mostly due to playing with a generational talent in Luka.
If there weren't enough basketballs in Dallas for DSJ, what makes anyone think it'd be any different in Chicago? We sure as hell can't bring him in with a promise of a major on-ball role. That's not available.
All true, but honestly, I like a Dunn /DSJ backcourt more than a Dunn/ Lavine one. I don't look at him as a replacement for Dunn.

But I think the reality is that he's been identified as a guy that likely doesn't help winning basketball, and instead of trying to trade at average value while the value is depleting, the likelihood is a guy like him is going to continue to play the way he plays and as people become more sure of what he is, that value is only going to continue to deplete.
DSJ has great value as a scorer. Is a talented lead guard with handles, shot making and crazy athleticism. He's not a great shooter but he looks comfortable shooting off the dribble and his shooting efficiency has improved a lot since his rookie season. However, he's not a good 'PG' (modest passer/playmaker but coupled with exceptionally high TO's), can't play a lick of defense, and is not effective off the ball offensively. Unless you're an absolutely elite offensive threat, how do you fit in to a successful team and be part of the puzzle. It's not encouraging.
Fit wise, he's a terrible compliment to Lavine. No defense between the two and no quality play-making. It would be turnover central. Dunn is both a better player and a better fit.
I'm not optimistic for DSJ to be a starting PG unless he's putting up numbers on a bad team. That said, I think he has the potential to be a really dynamic spark plug for a team off the bench that can lead a 2nd units offense.
So chuck Portis, Holiday, Valentine and whoever else that is semi-expendable on the table. But I'm not trading any important pieces or picks for him, that would be a big mistake.
I agree with everything you have written, and I know numbers don't back it up because it is too small sample size, but Simth jr. started playing some really good defence for several games before he got injured, he really was a pest for opposing PGs and it had significant impact on the team results - interestingly enough, Dallas losing streak started when he got injured. Not saying it is a sole reason (Barnes and Matthews had some awful shooting nights among else), but Dallas has been losing pretty close games, with small margin - I wonder whether he could have turned at least one or two around.
The way he has played, he's been their best perimeter defender by far and was containing opposition PGs from penetrating on most possessions, which is extremely important since Jordan has become a lazy ass on defensive side, who's only looking for rebounds (he's had multiple games with 0 blocked shots - I know it is not the most precise metric for judging rim protection, but at this rate it is indicative).
Also, few games they had during that stretch has been against teams who have very good PGs (Fox, Lillard) - I was looking forwards to those match-ups to see if that was a lasting change, but he was out injured.
That's interesting to know. If he can play defense and continue to improve his shooting, then you'd imagine he'd be a pretty solid fit in Dallas and that they should just keep him.
For now, I'll be skeptical of those developments until it's over a much larger period of time and his reputation starts to morph, but it's promising to here there's soe flashes there.
Let's be honest, any deal including Portis, Holiday, etc. Is a steal given his age and upside, plus years on rookie scale.

I would do a Dunn for DSJ swap. Make sense for both teams in that DSJ is a better shooter, finisher but Dunn provides defense and toughness for Dallas.
Lamelo will be a future superstar Bull. Book it. Lavar for president!

Re: Trade Thread: Armchair GMs welcomed
Honestly taking a flyer on Smith isn't a bad idea, especially if we're moving guys that won't be here in a year or so. Having him play off of Dunn in spurts or in that 6th man role isn't the worst idea.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.
KC: You were asked that question at the news conference announcing Thibodeau's dismissal and you answered yes

Flier on Josh Jackson or DSJ?
I think I’d prefer to keep Portis.

Yep, that is the type deal Bulls should make and then figure out the rest.
But imo Dallas is looking to either pack him for an established star (like Beal, but don't think he has that kind of value right now; A. Gordon has been frequent name on T&T board coming from Magic fans, and that would be interesting since imo he'd be great along Doncic) shortcutting the risk of him not panning out, or for similar young prospect who maybe has narrower but a more defined and fitting skillset (Bamba has been thrown around).
Still, him and Luka have very good relationship, he bought into the role and is working on his game in that direction (at least it seemd that way) so I think he gets more time - I think this rumor is in part consequence of Brunson's semi emergance too (although I am not that impressed with him tbh)
Not sure we have that kind of player (who is expandable) and I wouldn't (think) of trading Wendell for example.
As always, I'd like to see us take on salary for pick - in later part of Draft I'd have my eyes on, and if lucky to have him there, I'd pick Garland who might fall due to injury but is pretty talented guy.

They add a second Center better than what they have (RoLo), young talent (Portis), a disaster (Shrek) and a bench scorer that may play better under good direction. We could include Holiday but they should give an extra too.

Dallas isn't gonna want a non-shooting backup C any more than the rest of the league. In fact, they probably need MORE shooting than average from that position since Doncic is such a drive-and-kick weapon.
