Stro is only 27 .. Say we are a playoff contender in 3 years Marcus will be 30-31 which is totally fine should the results be good.
Anyways sounds like he's gone at some point with our controlled media talking negatively about him these days.

Because he's a free agent in two years...

that's okay... Pay the man if need be. .. If we are gonna be a playoff contender in 3 years time we are going to have to likely spend money on SP anyways.
Move Stro by all means but i wouldn't take the best deal if it isn't fantastic just for the sake of clearing money or getting rid a harmless sometimes annoying personalty.

Why not trade him now then pay him in 2 years if he's good and the team is good? What is the issue with the coming 2 seasons that changes so much?

There is that. Or more likely we can use those dollars to pay for someone even better.
Why keep him now, hoping that he is good in three years? In three years we will have even more information. Plus gain an asset or two along the way.

Shoemaker's a nice addition. Competition for the 5th spot/possibly a guy whose stuff will really excel as a reliever if it comes down to it. Not overpowering, but gets a good swinging strike rate.
Have to like those 1 + 1 guys who are still in their arb years; really nice trade bait when they excel, because a team can pick up a cheap year with little risk.

Shoemaker for 1 year at 3.5MM is a really good deal. I like guys that can strike people out at a good clip, and his walk rate is practical too. He has had some problems with the long ball, though, which will only be exacerbated by playing in the Dome/East.
One step closer to Stroman and Sanchez exiting.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Saying ‘just pay him’ in 2 years isn’t a very good planning move, he will be free to negotiate with all 30 teams by then. And they’ve likely seen enough signs or held enough talks to know that an extension isn’t happening at a reasonable price.

To be fair, we dont know how much cash is coming back to pay out Richard's owed
Edit: doesnt change the fact that he sucks and will likely have an ERA over 6 with the ugliest of WHIP's next year.

We gave up essentially nothing. Panas is old for his level, had a very bad 2018. and is limited to 1B/corner OF. He isn't really a prospect.
Richard is decidedly unappealing, but he's a back-end starter who gets a tonne of ground balls and will bore his way to a lot of decent-enough five inning starts, if healthy. We now have roughly 15 fifth starters, however, and the odds that Stroman or Sanchez will be gone are increasing.

**** your asterisk.

If you had to keep one who would you keep? Stro or Sanchez?

We’ve cornered the market on 7th starters.
Might as well put the srf, pannone, merryweathether, Thornton’s etc in the pen
Good chance they can work 4ip any night in relief
Piggybacking is back!
Worse era this year... Richards or Elvis?

As a pitcher? Stroman, without question. However, I would imagine that he has far more value; I'm still pretty unconvinced that Sanchez is even a starter long-term.

That’s not a very good comparison, completely different situations.

I've done a lot of thinking and I'm about 732% sure that this is all a form of psychological warfare where the Jays are going to confuse teams when they prepare as though they're going up against the easy portion of the rotation and "SURPRISE MFERS!!! Every part of the rotation is the best part of the rotation!!!!" And as a failsafe, other teams are going to be risking injuries with all the home run swings their highly paid allstars will be foolishly taking against the Jays.

Re: 2018-19 Offseason Thread
Interesting pitching strategy this off-season (since there isn't the high minors organizational talent yet to do otherwise). They have loaded up since the trade deadline, either via trade or free agency, with guys who might exceed their 2018 contributions to their former teams, but are recovering from injuries of varying severity. Merryweather, Shoemaker, Paulino, Richard, all have or have had injury issues that would have made their current teams question the wisdom of keeping them in preference to others. If even one exceeds low expectations, they become interesting trade bait. i.e. likely to bring back at least as much in prospect value as they offer on a rental basis, plus in some cases, with control years to boot.
2019 will never be forgotten because FLAGS FLY FOREVER
