Potential Vic Fangio Replacements

Post#1 » by patryk7754 » Mon Dec 31, 2018 12:05 pm

Fangio has been deserving of a HC job for a while now but his chances of getting that job have never been higher. With that being the case, we have to prepare to replace him.

My top candidate is Todd Bowles. He was an excellent DC in Arizona and even tho the jets were terrible (I put little blame on coaching and more on talent) that defense had a lot of good games.

Too early for this. The hot trend is younger, innovative offensive minded coaches who can develop QBs. The next McVay or Nagy.

I read, he deserves the opportunity however the winning teams are offensive coaches with good DCs. The NFL is a copy cat league. That being said I think teams will kick the tires on him to cast a wide net, But go with the hot trend in the end. I could be wrong too obviously, but with Arians possibly available as far a defensive coaches, Harbaugh might end up being free plus the plethora of younger offensive coaches and patriot staff being a commodity.

If Vic does not get his shot now, he never will.

This is probably true. So if I had to pick someone other than Vic right now Bowles does seem to fit based on his history with Nagy and being an HC candidate for Pace back when Pace was hired. Tho I selfishly dont want to think of Vic leaving.

I doubt Fangio gets an offer for a HC job. Lots of reasons.

- As has been mentioned, the trend is towards innovative offensive minds.

- If you look at the list of HCs who were just fired, most of them were from the defensive side of the ball.

- Coming into this season, the Vikes Mike Zimmer and the Panthers Ron Rivera would probably be offered up as defensive guys who successfully made the transition to HC. Now...not so much.

- Last season the Lions bucked the trend selecting Patriots DC Matt Patricia as their new head coach. This is now looking like a borderline disaster.

- Fangio is 60 years old.

This said, if Fangio gets a HC job, I'll be very surprised if he is replaced by anyone other than his D-backfield Coach Ed Donatell. Donatell not only provides continuity, but he has many years of experience as a DC.

If I was Vic I would say no to both the Dolphins and Broncos . I would not entertain a job from any team with qb issues because they will sell him on how they are all for a defense first approach then fire you mid way through the rebuild for a young offensive minded coach.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I expect Vic to be back.

But if he isn't, I'd look at Todd Bowles and Rex Ryan as DCs.

As I've already said, I don't think you're crazy. I expect Fangio to be back.

As I've also said, I'm not inclined to go for some "big name" DC. Do any of us know What a Bowles, Ryan or Wilks will actually bring to the party? Give me Ed Donatell.

Fangio's best bet, and they may go another direction. Looking more and more like he's going to be back.

Obviously nothing official yet, and this guy could just be FOS.

Congrats to Fangio. Wish him luck.

I didn't realize that Bowles and Nagy have some history (Eagles 2012) and have kept in touch. Reports are that it's between Bowles and Donatell. I'm OK with either and trust the Nagy-Pace team's judgement.
