NY and Boston after Z

Post#1 » by GYBE » Wed Aug 15, 2007 6:13 pm

According to the wiretap the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets are chasing Zambrano.

If he leaves, we're really screwed as far as pitching goes. Lilly/Hill is not a passable 1/2 for a contendor. Gallagher clearly isn't ready to step into the rotation, we'd wind up with Lilly/Hill/Marshall/Marquis/Dempster. Ugh.

There's also virtually no good FA pitchers we could go after. We'd have to wait until the 2008 offseason when a bunch of good guys become available (including Johan).

I still think Z will re-sign. His wife and her whole family are Chicago-bred, he's building a new house here and he genuinely seems to care about being a Cub. But if Hendry lets him leave, he should be fired on the spot.

And it's (Please Use More Appropriate Word) that the best hitting pitcher in the majors would go to an AL team.

Just to add, the Red Sox and Yankees don't even need Z. They both have great farm systems with pitching prospects ready to break into the rotation soon. NY has Joba and Kennedy, Boston has Buchholz, Bowden and more.

Losing him would hurt us so much more than it would help them.

Too bad they can't have him anymore.
