My point is, in discussion thread, arguments for and against are expected and needed. We need comparison between different rookies. Some heated discussions too. If someone want to talk how all rookies are great, he should open, Rookies admiration thread.

Re: 2018/19 ROY/Rookie Discussion Thread (Pt 2)
This thread name is, ROY/Rookie Discussion Thread. If you want to discuss, who is ROY, you just have to compare different rookies. And no, they are not all similar good. If someone says your favorite rookie is not good or that some rookie is better than other and you don’t agree, you should with arguments, stats, advanced stats... show, how this is not true. And not by calling people “stans”. But there is a catch, calling people “stans” is much easier. For example if I say Luka is much better than Trae, I can present advanced stats to back up my claim. The question is what would I get back from Trae supporters? For sure not facts and advanced stats.
My point is, in discussion thread, arguments for and against are expected and needed. We need comparison between different rookies. Some heated discussions too. If someone want to talk how all rookies are great, he should open, Rookies admiration thread.

Luka with 30 Pts, 6 Rebs & 5 Assists... Can't believe people compare him to any other rookie including Ayton who played terrible today.
ROY & It's not even close!

It's not uncommon for rookies to have bad games - Doncic has had a few of them himself this season.
I think Ayton has clearly been the 2nd best rookie so far this season - no need to lift Doncic up by putting Ayton down.

Luka been in a FT slump as of late. good news is he gets to the line quite a bit. basically the race is for 2nd place for ROY unless he misses 20+ games due to injuries.

Great game by Luka. Although, he's missing lots of fts lately.
Ayton just had a bad game on a SEGABABA. If you got stopped by DJ and Powell, you probably just had a bad day.

That pass off the trap to Jordan at 2:48 is just nuts. His shot creation and creation for others is just off the charts. How can anyone not see this guy as a future star?

Sometimes it feels like if Luka didn't take those stupid shots, like the one at the end of the game or the one he took from almost midcourt, he would be a .400 3pt shooter.
That's the one thing that's bothering me about him. He takes some dumb decisions sometimes. But I guess that's part of his persona…
Oh yeah and his FTs are indeed getting problematic. He almost didn't hit the rim on one of them.

Are you referring to those half-court heaves to end quarters? If yes, then I disagree. Players shouldn't be concerned with their fg percentage if it meant a chance to get points on the board.

A lot of nitpicking on a guy who just put up 30/6/5/3 steals on 8-14 shooting in a win...
Much like Manu, you can't stifle the creativity of a player as cerebral, crafty, or ballsy as Luka.

No not talking about those, even if it seems like he takes a lot of them. The shot at the end of this game didn't make any sense. The game was over, he just did it because Oubre scored the basket. And he took a weird 3pointer from almost halfcourt, he could have gone for a better shot, there was a lot of time left when he got the ball on that possession. It seems like he will sometimes do something just for the crowd, something that isn't a winning basketball play. He does the same on passes, like throwing a pass on the backboard for DJ.
Listen, I love Luka, but that's the thing that gets to me sometimes. Just play your game, don't overdo it.

Overall I respect him for taking long ones instead of worrying about his %s. He's a true competitor and a great player. Everyone knows that.
The only reason he took the one at the end was because with 27 seconds on the clock or whatever, Dallas just dribbled out the clock, and a few Mavs were already shaking hands with Suns players, and Oubre on the inbounds went in and dunked it...so Doncic said "Oh, we are going to pad stats/be disrespectful?" and launched the long 3 to rub it back to Oubre.

I could have just said "great game", but that's a less interesting comment than the one that I did. Doncic is becoming my favorite player, but I'm not blind. He has things to work on. It's okay to be critical of people that are great in their fields, you don't judge them by the same standards.

Yes, but your nitpick is off base. The only nitpick here is his FT shooting. There's nothing wrong with his shot selection. He takes and makes difficult shots. That's a big part of his game. If he took that last shot in a one possession game, that's one thing. But it didn't matter here, and the poster above explained why he took it.

I see your point. He's open to criticisms and it's fine, really. I guess he's just trying to pull off a highlight with these difficult shots. He's not a spectacular dunker after all. He's playing like a vet, but there's still some "rookie" in him.

That was indeed petty. He's still an immature kid with an old man's game, if you get what I mean. He'll get past that soon.

Well I don't think it's off base and I explained why in another post… so.. I guess I'll just put "Clear #1 rookie so far". Thats' what this thread needed.
As for your comment, "he takes difficult shots…" doesn't go with "there's nothing wrong with his shot selection". A difficult shot is by definition a shot that has a lower probability of going in. Every player is shooting better on easy shots than difficult shots. I've heard it often about Kobe : "He's a good bad shot taker." Well he had a bad FG% on clutch shots.

Ayton is starting to figure it out. As of late, he has been way better than in his first 20 so so games.

Same thing was happening in Madrid. In Euroleague he was taking a full court last second shot like in every other game, to the point that he had a guy on draft board who counted that if you exclude those shots, his 3PT% percentage would be higher by over 4 %. I tried to talk sense in some people who called Doncic a bad shooter, just because they were stat readers and he was shooting 32% from 3. Firstly, he was taking those full court shots all the time, and second, he always was last resort ISO guy for Madrid when Possession went south, so he was taking way too much contested step backs. Doncic is and was a good shooter.

Luka Doncic misses a 63-foot three-pointer from beyond midcourt
Doncic: "F....k the stats!"
KD 4 heaves in the first 9 seasons with OKC... Doncic 2 heaves in less of half season.
Doncic will not will never be a "fake" superstar.
