Bears off-season moves
With the season being over for the Bears I thought it would be a good time to start thinking about our off-season moves.
Fangio Replacements
Gregg Williams
Todd Bowles
Rex Ryan
Steve Wilks
Ed Donatell
Clearly, my top choice would be Bowles but I think he'll choose the Bucs. Rex Ryan would be best option but I don't think he'll be an option. I believe he'll only return if he's offered a HC job. Gregg Williams is a great DC but I don't think the bears will consider him. Wilks will be looked because of his previous success but ultimately I don't think he'll be considered.
Ultimately I think Donatell gets the job.

I don't see the Bears adding a TE with one if the first picks or in initial free agency. Depth at OL and CB is probably more important. I also wouldn't be surprised if a RB is taken in rounds 3-5.

Re: Bears off-season moves
I would add Chuck Pagano as candidate to replace Fangio. His scheme is 3-4 and he is a veteran DC.
For releases I would add: Bobbie Massie, Kevin White, Marcus Cooper, Cody Parkey in addition to Sims.
Howard may need to be moved for a RB that fits better.
Needs: RT, DB, K, RB, WR
Donatell is up in age and may not want the added responsibility of running the whole defense and playcalling at this stage as he seemed content to work under Fangio for years after having been a DC in a couple spots in his career, but this is pure speculation.

Massie and White expire. Cooper has already been cut. I think we only cut Parkey if we bring in Gould. And i don't think we move Howard becayse he was great once Nagy adjusted play calling a bit. But he and Cohen are the only reliable RBs and Howard expires, so I can see another guy being drafted.

Ja'Wan James would be a good addition. Where does he play?

I think our needs are RT and K, and depth at RB, QB, OLB, CB and WR. Assuming we re-sign the guys listed above.

If we cut parley our cap hit becomes over 5 mill.

Also we’re not going to get rid of a guy who was top 5 in rush yards his first two season, made a lot of game winning plays this season Andre is still on his rookie contract

Isn't there a deadline after which we can cut Parkey without the cap hit?

No. If the Bears wait until June or July 1 then the cap hit drops a few hundred thousand to $4.2M I believe.
And I agree that Howard will not be moved. Unless it is for a very high pick and we add a couple RBs.

Re: Bears off-season moves
We could also use a KR. Cohen only handled PR and our kick return average was near the bottom of the league I think.
While I'm on the topic of kickoffs, Cody Parkey kicks like a *itch in kickoffs. He was trash in every category this season. He needs to fix all this stuff in the off-season because we owe him too much damn money for this!

Bears can make do with a 4.2M hit IMO. The national media is saying they don't see how he can be brought back. He blew 11 kicks total and you could see how angry Nagy was. Parkey needs a fresh start. With Robbie G being available next season Bears won't have another shot at improving at that position if they hold on to Parkey.

We'll have about 15+ roster spots to fill, including a starting SS and RT and a nickel CB, with $20M. Any kicker we sign will probavly get at least $3M. So we would be paying over $7M for a kicker. The only way i do it is if I've already filled those three major needs, filled the other gaps in the roster, and still have money to spend.

I wouldn't be shocked if we cut Long. He's under contract for two or three more years, is one of the highest paid players on the roster, and has been on IR three years in a row now. Witzman played really well.

Or how about restructuring Long to accommodate the cap hit from Parkey. Parkey literally trained himself to hit uprights.

I don’t see us cutting long. Restructuring him might happen. We probably bring Massie back as well in all likelihood.

Re: Bears off-season moves
Chuck Pagano is in. OLB Staley is out. Rob Ryan might be the new OLB coach. Donatell may leave to be DC in Denver, not sure who'd replace him.
Cut Sims.
That gives us about $25.6M in cap space.
Sign (1 from each position, in order of preference)
SS 5-7m/yr: Amos, Thomas, Clinton-Dix, Boston or Vaccaro
CB 3-4.5m/yr: Callahan, Nelson, Claiborne, Coleman
RT 4-6m/yr: James or Daryl Williams
WR 2m/yr: Bellamy
P 1.5m/yr: O'Donell or Pinion
DE 1.5m/yr: Roy Robertson-Harris
RB 1-1.5m/yr: CJ Anderson, Damien Williams, Latavius Murray, Zach Zenner, Mike Davis.
OG 1m/yr: Witzmann
OLB 1m/yr: Golden, Lynch, Harold, Irving
LS 0.7m/yr: Scales
OG 0.7m/yr: Rashaad Coward
TE 0.7m/yr: Ben Braunecker
Long will make 8.6, Amukamara will make 9.5, Trevathan 7.65. Maybe we can restructure those contracts. Long is the best candidate.
I would also consider trading Long, Trevathan and Amukamara if we fill their positions in FA or if Heistand/Pagano thinks the younger backups can step up. Witzman or Coward would have to take Long's spot. Kwit or Iggy takes Trevathan's spot. Callahan or FA takes Amukamara's spot, and Tolliver moves into the nickel. A trade would give us cap relief and decent draft picks that could also compete to fill the void. Trevathan is probably the best candidate for a trade out of the 3.
If we clear enough cap space I'd also like to bring in WR Tyrell Williams for 5-6m/year, but that's a luxury deal. He'd be our #2 WR.
EDIT: Anderson and Williams probably played themselves out of our price range, unless we trade Howard and are willing to pay 2-5m for one of them to be our starter. I would keep Howard.

Edit. Parkey and the ST Coordinator will be kept for at least one more year. If they both suck again then there both gone.

Re: Bears off-season moves
Parkey made a comment about not wanting to practice at soldier field b/c he didnt want to sit in traffic. I think he needs to go after the june milestone or by training camp. Move Tabor out now. Dont need another year to see why he was coaching on the Browns 0-16 team.
