An interesting trade IMO, would be Portis for Dennis Smith Jr. The Bulls, IMO, should not keep Portis after this season as he's clearly the worst of Lauri, Carter, and himself, and no need to spend a ton of money on your back up PF.
The Bulls don't really have an answer at PG, and while I'm not excited about Dennis Smith Jr per se, you have 2 more years on his rookie deal after this, and maybe he still develops into a player down the road or can be swapped for something better later.
Mavs don't really have much at PF after Dirk retires, so getting a look at Bobby and his RFA rights might be more intriguing than anything else they can do with Smith Jr.
While I'm not a huge fan of Smith, I know he's got a crapton more trade value than Bobby Portis, a slow big man who's a black hole on offense and completely useless on defense and is almost done with his rookie deal.
Dallas is likely looking to find a versatile defensive big or 3&D guy. Probably asking for Isaac from Orlando.

DSJ's value is a lot closer to WCJ than compared to Portis. Remember, DSJ was someone the Bulls could have picked instead of Lauri and the only reason he is being traded is because he doesnt fit with Doncic, not bc he sucks. I would trade for DSJ and maybe get additional pick. He is at minimum a starting caliber pg and Dunn can get traded as he is too old to develop. Easily the most athletic guard since Rose which we missed out for a very long time.
I would like to see this lineup: DSJ/Lavine/FA/Lauri/Bol or DSJ/Lavine/De' Hunter/Lauri
Lamelo will be a future superstar Bull. Book it. Lavar for president!

No real interest in pairing DSJ and Lavine in the backcourt. At least Dunn and Lavine fill in for each other’s weaknesses.

I would absolutely do Portis for DSJ... I feel like you'd have to sweeten that deal though, Portis with upcoming RFA status doesn't hold much positive value.
Smith Jr. isn't a bad player. Is he the answer at PG? Maybe, maybe not. Last year I thought he seemed like fools gold, but this season he's upped his shooting efficiency significantly and supposedly flashed some good defense.
Dunn is a superior playmaker and defender, and I think those areas are significant in terms of the fit with Lavine and our bigs, but his lack of shooting also causes significant fit and lineup issues (he's on 34.6% so far this season, 9/26, so I won't completely write him off as a non-shooter from 3 just yet but it's unlikely he becomes any more than a low volume threat from deep). I do think DSJ gives you more firepower, shooting, and general upside in comparison.
Of course, it's not an either/or thing. We have nothing notable backing up Dunn at PG, Dunn himself isn't at a 'lock him in' starting PG level, and it would, in this scenario, cost us a upcoming RFA who has his fit issues as well. DSJ is well worth a flier.
Worst case scenario, DSJ is an upgrade on the backup PG position and has longer on his rookie deal compared to Portis.
It's really hard to say Dunn is superior to DSJ when he's like 5 yrs older with an enormous cap hold and expiring contract. When I say DSJ is superior, I am talking about in terms of age, potential, production, efficiency and DSJ checks out on all boxes. I would never pay someone 15-20 million dollars multi yr for a 25 yr old injury prone pg that cannot space the floor. No more Lavine/ Jabari type signings where you just randomly throwing out near max contracts for nobody. If the Bulls get DSJ, he will be the best pg since Rose for a long time. I just dont see anyone surpassing DSJ unless the Bulls use a number 1 pick on a pg.

If they were truly sold on DSJ's potential then I doubt you'd see him moved regardless of the fit with Doncic. And it begs the question, if you can't fit with a Doncic, how many teams are you going to fit on? Most elite teams have creators on the wings in some capacity. If you want to be a high usage, on-ball PnR guard, then you need to be an elite scorer and as a PG probably a high level creator as well. It's hard to envision DSJ doing either of those things.
As he was in his rookie season, this is why I'd say he's fools gold, because he was an average on-ball piece that didn't really make his teammates better and didn't play defense. You don't see those guys on winning teams. That said, if the shooting and defensive progressions are legitimate, then he may be a more well rounded player than expected and have a decent career ahead.
I didn't say Dunn is superior, per se, but he is night and day better at the areas I mentioned, it's hard to see DSJ ever being remotely close as a facilitator or defender to where Dunn is now. As it stands, DSJ is not a good fit with our roster... PG skills and instincts are hard to teach and he is limited size/wingspan wise on defense regardless of effort.
I'm all for DSJ if we can get him cheaply but I wouldn't invest serious assets in to him.

Re: Trade Thread: Armchair GMs welcomed
Bulls get : Barnes, DSJ
Mavs get : Portis, Parker, Arcidiacono
For the Bulls : young talented prospect at PG that fits our system, veteran help at 3-4 spot, volume 3 pt shooter
For the Mavs : clear one year on a big salary, help at PF with Portis - Jabari, 3rd string PG that fits their style
Long shot probably. Suns and Magic have better assets to send.

hell no, Dallas would do that.. they want to make playoffs, not miss out

They have Doncic, Barea, Brunson for PG and Harris too, they dont need Arci AND THEY DONT WANT to lose Barnes for
Parker, Barnes and Doncic have solid chemistry...

You're right I guess, who would want Jabari

They lost Barea to an achilles injury though, that's why I added Arci in the proposed deal.

I'm all-in on turning Bobby into a recyclable asset in Smith. What about Portis/Blakeney for Smith/Mejri? I'd throw in a 2nd rounder, just for some extra board moaning.
Bobby would be great for Dallas and a super fit next to Jordan.

Dunn is only 1 year further a long in his rookie deal than DSJ and is a bit less than 4 years older, not 5. DSJ has been more or less terrible (PER of 12 this year 11 year before as a volume scorer which inflates PER). His team is looking to get rid of him. I would say DSJ is on the verge of being an also ran for his career not on a path to likely high production.
I think you're inflating both his potential and current ability pretty significantly. He was picked 8th in a draft class that wasn't viewed as being super stacked by any stretch. He wasn't a guy that is can't miss (or even close) and he hasn't played that well to date and isn't in the plans of his current team.
DSJ's most likely outcome is somewhere between deep bench and fringe starter, not star.

Re: Trade Thread: Armchair GMs welcomed
I’d like Smith in a sixth man scoring role, more so than I like the thought of paying Portis to play that role. He probably won’t be much more than that. Short guard with short arms that isn’t very efficient and doesn’t see the floor isn’t all that valuable a player.

How about a deal to help BKN this year:
Bobby/RoLo for Crabbe/Levert
Punts FA money down the road a year and Levert is a good talent (if he ever gets healthy). Crabbe may be resignable on a cheap deal in a year if we like him.

Wouldn’t mind this deal. Bring in Dennis Smith as a back up and see how he does. Definitely has potential.

Unfortunately Billy King isn't still running that team.

I'd deal Portis for DSJ.
I don't believe DSJ will ever be a starting PG for a good team but I like his potential as a scoring guard off the bench.

Re: Trade Thread: Armchair GMs welcomed
Listening to Game Theory with Sam Vecenie and the deal they discussed was Lopez to HOU for Brandon Knight and their 2019 first.
HOU just lost Capela for 4-6 weeks, Nene is also out so they are down to Marquess Chriss and PJ Tucker at their 5 spot. Lopez isn't a great fit for them but he could provide a body to soak up minutes for the next month. They need some reinforcements to help out Harden for the foreseeable future.
Getting off of the Knight contract is the real win for them here. He has next year signed for 15 mil, so this allows them to get under the luxury tax and make some moves in the offseason. This deal makes a lot of sense for both sides.
