Opinion needed - Visiting Orlando #4

Post#1 » by AddiFB » Mon Jan 21, 2019 12:32 pm

Hey guys

I'm planning my fourth visit to Orlando. I've been there in February, March and April. That time period has been perfect for me but since my girlfriend is in college, we can't go in FEB-MAR-APR.

We are now thinking about Christmas 2019 or June 2020.

Now I need your opinion on the weather on these two dates: How's the weather in December? I've heard June can be quite wet, a colleague once was there in June and he rarely saw a dry day, so I'm quite sceptical about June, to be honest. Google search tells me June can indeed be wet. So, June is a weather lottery?

Also... what restaurants/places to eat would you recommend that are not the regular "chain" places? Something the regular tourist might not know about 8-)

It depends on your interests, where you want to go, what you want to do, etc. If you want to hit the parks, the summer is when most people have their kids and it can be a bit of a nightmare. Awkwardly enough, one of my Physics teachers worked on the coasters at Busch Gardens (I believe he is in the little video of Kumba?) and when we went to take data on the rides for a project, we went on his suggestion of February 20ish because it is usually dead. It was. We attempted to ride Montu 20 times in a row (I blacked out on 14 on the batwing, no shame.) They didn't even make us get off because no one was in line.

Mills-50 has a lot of cool things. Interesting acts show up at the Plaza, there are some great holes in the wall to eat (Loving Hut, Lac Viet, Taco Cheena, Drunken Monkey), and there can be some interesting events there (Full Moon Drum Circle on every Full Moon and the Milk District Food Truck Rally/Bars). There is also the Scottish Highland games in January as well as wine crawls and ghost pub crawls during October when the Halloween and mellower weather start to hit. The American Ghost Society usually tries to do a big midnight ghost hunt at Greenwood cemetery or somewhere equally creepy if you are into that.

Lastly, Lakeridge WInery has events that are pretty cool. I went to one of their spring jamboree things where they had basically an Arts and Crafts show out on the field with a stage and live music and wine tours/tastings. It was a great event.

Weather in December was excellent this year. Could get some cold days but usually it's perfect and rarely rains. Summertime we get rain often every afternoon but sort of depends. It is usually short and later in the afternoon 4pm or 5pm. You can get some serious downpours for a day or two at a time depending on the tropics. I guess you might also get a hurricane although they usually come later.

The women wear less clothes in June but the parks are less crowded in December, so I guess it depends what you're looking for.

If you are coming from Iceland the heat and humidity will be tough to deal with if you are waiting on long lines in the parks during the summer. I suggest December as it will be cooler but if you want to hit the beaches then yea do summer time. If you want to see cooler weather and less lines at the parks prob come mid Jan and Feb.

In June it will rain every day but usually only around 2 to 3pm and for short periods usually, but its heavy rain. Then the sun comes out and its like it didn't rain at all just moments ago, but again the humidity will make it feel really hot and sticky. Lots of sunscreen and drink water, buy a plastic poncho to protect yourself from those heavy but short downpours.

In terms of restaurants check areas in Winter Park, Thornton Park and Viettown/Mills-Colonial 50 district. Lots of local/independents restaurants that are really good. There is also a cool brewery in downtown Winter Garden, Crooked Can Brewery.

Whatever you do don't go to Disney on Christmas day.

We did Orlando at Christmas for the first time this year and enjoyed it - the weather was great from Boxing Day onwards.

Obviously, if you want to see some basketball, then June isn’t really an option (unless the Magic make the Finals of course....cue endless laughter) but I’ll let you decide whether seeing Magic games is something you do or don’t want to do at the moment.

Agreed, but when you consider the obesity rate in Orlando, this may not be as good as it sounds.
