Prediction: How much will Nikola Vucevic garner in free agency?

Post#1 » by Magic_Johnny12 » Wed Jan 23, 2019 11:02 pm

I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone's thoughts were on how much our beloved Nikola and soon to be All - Star will demand this off-season. He's having an all-star caliber season and for this exercise we're going to assume he makes it in this year and continues his stellar play over the course of the entire season.

Extra points if you guess the amount of years and what team(s) offers it.

Does he take hometown discount to stay in Orlando?
Does he take a shorter contract max deal?
Does he care more about long-term security (just had a kid)?
Does making the playoffs this season help his case at all?

I have a sneaking suspicion that Vuc is paving the way out of town. Just based off some recent things that have been said, like Fournier reiterating Vuc’s impassioned speech. “We’re not stupid; we know if we don’t make the playoffs this year, this is probably it for us”. (Next line is “Just like Vuc and myself, we like it (here in Orlando) and like playing with each other”).

And in his recent interview with Woj, he kind of skirted the question about free agency by saying “I haven’t really thought about it”.

As a Magic fan, I’d like him to stay because he’s the best player we have right now, and it’s always a shame to lose an asset for nothing. But from Vuc’s perspective, he’s in his prime now, he can get paid the same or similar money from actual contenders, so signing up for another 3-4 years of struggle might be a hard sell for him.

Vuc seems like a class act though, so maybe he’ll take one for the team and re-sign even though we likely won’t make it very rewarding during his tenure short of some low playoff births.

I was thinking the same. Capella is on a great deal. I think he stays around because of his baby, maybe on a 3 year deal, however, I think he get's offered close to Adams money by some other team. Brook Lopez got $22.6 a year at one point? I think it's between that and Adams money unfortunately. Anywhere between $18-22 would be nice.
Do not max Vuc!

If it’s a 2 year deal then closer to 18m.

If 4 years, 14-16m.

I voted Clint Capela money because NBA GMs never cease to overpay. He should get a ~$16 mil per year deal but people just don’t have good judgment skills.

Not sure anyone will pay 20 million a year. What other center free agents next year? Kanter, DJ, Noel, Len, Gortat, Lopez, Howard, that's off the top of my head.

He isn’t an all-star. All—stars perform in the clutch. He’s clearly above average but he’s not an all-star.

None. If we give him a huge contract half our cap will be tied up in centers.

Capela gets his numbers by having 3 different PGs to run high pick& roll and get dunks.
His skillset ,despite similar production is nowhere near as high as Vuc.
You put Capela on Magic instad of Vuc and he would look like Bamba, BIyombo or Mozgov because he would get zero good looks and would run pick&roll with who? Evan and Augustin ?

If somebody has good sense of quality around the league than he'll get his 2-3 years 18-21M deal per year, with Magic or with somebody else.

It would be interesting to see how would Magic handle offense if he leaves. I can't imagine Clifford sticking around for 2,3 years of rebuild being 57 years old and not being guy who is perfect for rebuilds.

While you are correct about the offensive side of the court, you are completely forgetting Capela’s true value: defense. Now, let’s not pretend Houston’s defense would look the same with Vuc instead of Capela.
