Sigh....Oladipo out for season..What next?

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Thu Jan 24, 2019 1:55 am

As news of the injury trickles in, we can follow here and maybe spout some ideas of what to do. Tank? Acquire a fill in SG? Start Tyreke and ride it out?

Problem is the Pacers are good enough that even without Dipo you'll miss the lottery. The current team can atleast go .500 the rest of the way and still end up with a 5th or 6th seed.

If the injury is going to be career altering then you trade players at the deadline and see if you can rebuild for 2 years from now. If they think he can come back from the injury and be fine for next year i wouldn't even tank, just make small moves and try to finish the year strong.

Well my Tourette's syndrome is back! And I have to clean up the vomit in the family room now, I'm just hoping he will be ok and can come back next season. Surgical techniques are great and I'm sure he will have the best surgeon money can buy.

As for what to do, it has to be Evans stepping up. The team should be able to get a "disabled player exception." I've heard some talk that the Nets might want to move DAR since they have Dinwiddie signed now. I know the team won't tank, and they won't go trade for a Mike Conley or someone over priced.

How does the disabled player exception work? 50% of the injured players salary?

They won 8 out of 10 I think earlier this year when he was out. This team will never tank.

We have too good of a record at this point to tank, and even if we weren't we still wouldn't tank.

Have to believe Dipo will be back next year, I think we just ride it out and play cinderella in the playoffs.

Still wouldn't be opposed to Conley.

$32.5 million for a 32 year old with a history of injuries? No thank you sir.

After this year, he will have one guaranteed year left and then the last year of his deal is an early termination option according to the internet.

If we are trying to stay competitive, he’s our best bet. Makes more sense to me than dropping 5 years 35 mil per on kemba....

But in general it’d probably be Wise to just develop Holiday and Sumner in his stead.

A 33 year old Conley is not gonna exercise his ETO.

In a vacuum, I’m still taking 2.5 of Conley versus 5 of Kemba.

Just keep things simple and not make any panic moves. Vic's health is most important and we'll worry about Pacers basketball later. Someone in my thread last week dangled the idea of seeking a FRP for impending free agent Bojan Bogdanovic. If Vic misses extensive time, we might want to take that one into serious consideration.

I doubt many people would agree but I would go all in on this draft despite it supposedly being not good. I would look at all the teams trying to compete and try to get a first round pick from them while 1) not touching the core of Oladipo/Turner/Sabonis/Holiday and 2) not taking back any contracts that go past 2020.

Some of the teams and trades I would look at:

Portland: Tyreke and Ike (to make salaries match) for Evan Turner and 2019 first
Lakers: Bogie and O’quinn for Caldwell-Pope, Mykailiuk and 2019 first

Other teams I looked at:

Detroit: I don’t actually know what their rotation is and who isn’t playing much.
Brooklyn: Have two picks but I wouldn’t trade for Dudley unless we’re getting both of them.
New Orelans: Again, don’t have much of value they’d trade other than their pick.

I have a feeling that Pritchard won't want to disrupt the locker room chemistry any more than it already will be with Vic down. I could be wrong.

That's the way I feel about it. I'm sick over it. I had the oppty to meet Victor a few months ago when I did some work for one of his team mates. I won't say which one it's kind of confidential. But he's just a fine young man and a great example for any kid who might look up to him as a hero. We've got a bunch of guys like that, which is why this team won't quit. They should dedicate the rest of the season to Victor.

The Pacers had Evan Turner I don't think he will be coming back. I get that you're trying to bring in some draft picks, but I really don't want to revisit Evan Turner.

I don't like the 2nd trade much either.

Now I don't like the idea of this but I'm sure you could get Houston to bite on giving up a #1 if you want to take Brandon Knight. But I don't know if Knight can even play.

I'd like to move up and get a shot at Romeo Langford or Kris Wilks. One way to do that is look at the teams that are over the luxury tax and see if you can help them get out of the tax, like Houston. Now we're not moving up if we get the Rockets #1 but the pick could be combined with our pick and move up a few spots. Target teams would be OKC, Washington, Miami, Boston, and Toronto along with the Rockets are teams that might like to get out of the tax. Doing a deal with any of them will be iffy because we have to send out players and take back some trash they don't want.

One deal that might make sense would be with Boston for Rozier who they are not gonna be able to resign. I'm thinking something like TJ Leaf for Rozier, this does not get them out of the tax. They might want to move Smart who I know the Pacers had an interest in. We could do Cory Joseph for Smart and one of the Celtics 4 #1 picks in this draft. Now they might be holding out thinking they can get Anthony Davis. But, they have to try to resign Kyrie Irving this summer and they will go deep in the tax. If they decide this year is not their year and they are not getting AD they might just do some financial clean up.

Why would we make any trades couse Dipo is out... we have decent team, we have a several young players who needs minutes... we need to keep this team and find a new PG in free agency...

You're right we don't have to do anything we've got guys to step up. But if guys like Evans can't do it we have little time to get something done because the deadline approacheth!

I don't expect the Pacers to punt the season or tank. I think we can reasonably expect some kind of small move for a KCP or even Kent Bazemore, to help fill the gap. I hope we'll get to see plenty of Aaron Holiday.

Personally, I'd be actively looking to trade Tyreke, DC, and KOQ. Get whatever you can. I'd be willing to listen to offers for Bogey, and even Thad if a team is willing to overpay. I really like Thad and would be happy to have him re-sign and stay here until he retires. But there are probably a number of teams that could use Thad and Bogey, and if anyone wants to overpay for their playoff push, now's the time to be the seller and try to cash in some of the very tradeable assets we have for late draft picks or undeveloped young talent.

It might sound like tanking, and maybe in a way it would be, if we traded more than one or two of those guys and let Holiday and Alize get the playing time. But we're still likely to win 45 games and make the playoffs this year, so it wouldn't be tanking as much as it would be asset management and developing the young guys while actually competing (albeit not at the same level as a 3 seed).
