Jackie MacMullan: Jimmy Butler, 76ers on "thin ice"

Post#1 » by GoCeltics123 » Fri Jan 25, 2019 5:35 pm

I don't think this affects his FA that much, but I think Jackie Mac alluded to what has been rumored before of issues with Butler in Philly:

"I think he's on thin ice, Zach," MacMullan said of Butler. "I think he's on thin ice. And I think he's a very talented player and no one has ever called him soft either, he's a very tough player. On paper, he would be exactly what you'd want on a team. He's not a selfish player, I would never say that about him. He defends, boy does he defend. He gets at it. He makes good decisions on the offensive end of the floor. I don't know him well enough to know, is it real or is it bravado—this whole idea that I'm going to take everyone on.

"I can tell you, having spent a couple of days in Philadelphia, they don't love it."

Lowe also mentioned he doesn't think Jimmy will get the full 5 year max offer from Philly, he thinks it'll be more like Jokic when he almost gets the max offer, but is a few dollars short.

Butler seems to need to be on a team that has an established veteran star.

On thin ice in general based on the Minny narrative, but I wouldn’t describe him being on thin ice in Philly. Things are going well here. Embiid/Simmons/Butler have been great on the court together.

Doesn’t mean a damn thing, other than maybe a team that wants Jimmy leaked a non-story

again, what does 'He's on thin ice" mean? are they close to trading him? let him go in FA? and why would a reporter from Boston know anything about this?

Interesting this story comes from a Boston for life reporter.

Last time she reported on a team outside of Boston with the "LMA wants out of SA" it was completely BS.

Questionable report, but Jimmy has a reputation of being not-so respectful towards staff, so I could see that frustrating people she potentially could be in contact with.

Odd, a few days ago Haynes said he was "speaking on behalf of teammates" when he talked with Brown and they like him it seemed.

Wasn’t that true until Pop smoothed things over?

Yes I read the quote but it’s extremely ambiguous. Who in the Sixers organization would tell Jackie MacMullan they have a problem with Butler’s antics? Unlikely to be anyone of significance, if anyone at all.

Usually I wouldn't buy this much at all but that Hoop Collective pod a couple weeks ago with Windhorst/Shelburne/Friedell does kinda back it up a bit, though things could've changed a lot since then and probably have.

I like Jimmy, hell of a player, but seems like there is some friction with teammates everywhere he's been. Could be a completely unfair assessment only reflecting his time in Minny.. What do 76ers fans think so far? Bulls fans?

I believe he offers Philadelphia deeper lineup versatility, but lineups featuring Embiid Simmons and Butler are only +2.7 net pp100. That's pretty lackluster given the financial commitment to Butler past this season, age, and overall firepower.

No clue man. I still think he re-signs and everything, maybe by thin ice they're referring to his request of the 5 year max.
