Can Vuc be traded if he makes the all star team?

Post#1 » by thelead » Sat Jan 26, 2019 5:25 am

Obviously they 'can' but I'm asking 'can the team afford the PR hit of trading their first all star since Dwight'?

The problem is, if you don't trade him, you risk losing him for nothing this summer.

I wouldn't take the chance of him walking, optics be damn.

I think the FO would get ridiculed by the press. They already do that though, so maybe they do not care. I really don't think they WANT to trade him either.
Woj is the new Bucher. Shams is the new Woj. Espn is the new TMZ. The NBA is the new WWE.

But aren't the rosters announced before the deadline?

Our organization already looks like a bunch of incompetent idiots so whats the worst that could happen by trading another all star away from a talent starved team for pennies on the dollar? Cant get much worse.

It's much worse to watch an "all star" (using quotes because it's not certain yet) choose to walk away and sign with another team. That says way more about how crappy our franchise has been lately. Maybe the average fan wouldn't understand trading an expiring all star, but the sports world would and there'd be articles to support the move.

Theres no way they gonna trade him if he is selected. That would be a PR suicide.
Unless its for someone like DSJ and they can rationalise they get a potential future all star.
overall highly doubtfull
Id love to be proven wrong though.

I mean the Kings did it with Cousins who was already league-wide known as a locker room cancer and still got a ton of blowback and ridiculed in the media for it. It would be pretty ironic if we did it with Vuc now considering we are pretty much considered the Kings of the east.

Maybe it would go over better considering Vuc is expiring and we didn't make him any verbal promise that we would resign him, but I still think we would get ridiculed by the media. At the end of the day though, if the right trade is out there you take it without hesitation. Im not convinced that it will be though and think we would get much less value than we would like.

I don't see how it changes the math at all. There is going to be a PR hit whenever he leaves; regardless of whether or not he ever gets selected for an ASG. He has been here for a while and there are obviously a lot of Magic fans that are Vucevic fans.

The only considerations that should be relevant are whether or not the front office sees him as a part of the future and how confident they are that they will be able to bring him back if they do see him as a part of the future.
"Xatticus has always been, in my humble opinion best poster here. Should write articles or something."

Yeah that would be a Danny Ainge type move. I still can't believe he traded KG and Pierce after they won a championship. Cold hearted.

lol of course not.... we are already crapped on, so the pile would only get higher. We'd just have to be willing to get roasted if that's the route we go. I mean a lot of it would depend on what we got in return, but as an expiring with only a few months left I don't realistically expect anything more than a late first and a random young player. Yeah... not going to be a good look at all. Here's the kicker... he would have to be traded BEFORE all-star weekend, so he wouldn't even be representing us. We're looking at a possible scenario where Oladipo, Harris and Vuc will be celebrated as all-stars in their primes in the same season by non-Magic teams. Embarrassing.

And I don't think it's anywhere close to a given that Vuc would choose to walk. The man could have demanded out when henny and vogel took a fat dump on him with biyombo, but he didn't. Now he's playing great for a new coach he likes and credits for getting the most out of him. Plus he's put down roots with a home, family and restaurant... he loves his off court small market life.

Here's a quote from the beginning of the season before he had his kid...
``Orlando is a great city to raise a family because they have great schools and there are a lot of great people around here that I have met,’’ said Vucevic.``I know a lot of people who have kids now and when my kid grows up, they can spend time together. Orlando is a great, great city. It’s safe, calm and the weather is nice as well, so kids can play outside. So, it’s a great city to raise a family.’’

Does this sound like a dude who wants to leave Orlando? Seems more like a situation where the decision is more on the Magic. Shouldn't be an easy decision for either party as there could easily be a mutually beneficial deal on the table.

I advocated for trading him away last season at the deadline so that we would be able to properly tank and get the decent value out of him as a cheap productive center with 1.5 years left on his contract. we didn't do that. then I advocated for extending him this summer as cheap as possible. we didn't do that either.

right now as a management who wasted the first 2 years of their 5-year tenure to show something, they are not in a position to have their first big move being the trade of franchise's only all-star for pennies on the dollar. they can't afford to. even though there is a very decent chance that he will walk this summer, even though this might blow up in their faces. that's why this question doesn't have a good answer at this point, it's too late. they already **** up.

their best course of action now is keeping him and hoping to sign him cheap out of loyalty, which is an outcome that they can't fully control. maybe they will luck out, we'll see.

I dont care what accolades he “earns”. I’d rather have a real offense and the FO to actually build something sustainable. He basically made the all-star team because he has a green light due to Orlando lacking options.

Surely if he makes an all-star team it bumps up his trade value (which we want) while also bumping up how much he'll ask for in the offseason (which we don't want).

I do not believe he'll be a perennial all-star. I don't trust him to keep up this level of play especially if the team isn't built around him going forward.

If the Magic losses the next 2-3 in a row, then Vučević is really the right thing to do FOR HIM.

When's the right time to make a decision on Vučević?
