Our league ranking in opp ppg is one spot better right now than it was last year (19th) and the roster last year was probably at least slightly more defensively talented. I just don't think its possible to be very good at defense when your backcourt rotation is Kemba, Lamb, Parker, and Monk, and Batum is supposed to be your starting units defensive stopper.

Im actually surprised by that. Swear it seems like we gave up at least 120 a game for a month straight.

I was surprised too. I think it seems worse because we are giving up more points, but everyone is giving up more points.

Yeah pretty much, but it is important to note that Clifford's plan works vs teams that can't shoot the three. These tend to be young teams. Teams that can shoot routinely blew us out of the gym under Clifford.

Our 3pt defense is 12th this year (34.7 for opposing teams). That is better then it ever was under Clifford. Last year we were 27th (37.5%) and the year before we were 25th (36.9%). Cliffs best year we were 15th (35.3%) and the two years before that we were 22nd (35.7%) and 27th (37.2%)

Clifford's scheme is a relic from before the space and pace era. It helps beat the rebuilding teams and can drag a middling team to the 8th - 12th spot, but you get blown out by the good teams in the playoffs if you get there.

Coach JB goes small a lot more which helps defending the 3pt line but gives up more points in the paint and more offensive rebounds to the other team. Part of our problem has also been Willy (I play defense with my arms at my sides) Hermangomez. It also takes a little bit to adjust to a new scheme and hopefully we will continue to improve.

Yikes, I just realized we're currently 18-8 at home and 7-18 on the road. Thats not a good sign for our chances in the playoffs.

I checked team advanced stats expecting us to have a terrible Q4 ORTG.

https://stats.nba.com/teams/advanced/?sort=OFF_RATING&dir=-1&Season=2018-19&SeasonType=Regular%20Season&Period=4

Q4 ORTG: 110.5, ranked 7th
Q4 DRTG: 112.2, ranked 27th

Not what I expected to be the primary problem.

I would have expected also to be worse in offense in the fourth.
But our real problem this season is toughness and defense.

https://fansided.com/2019/03/05/nba-zone-defense-heat-nets/

Interesting read - mostly about Heat and Nets, but the Hornets are mentioned as well. The short version is that more teams are trying Zone defenses and finding success with them. The Hornets are one of only 2 teams that tried enough to make the top 8 list without it working for them.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody
