Here's why.
On the con side, yes, they're adding some salary. And one of those salaries is Plumlee's.
On the pro side, this is effectively a Melo situation in MEM. They're reportedly talking to ATL because they're looking for some way to climb out from under the remaining two years of a big lump contract that is even slightly larger than the Dwight Howard one we sent away. I mean, they're not even playing Parsons right now. Effectively, they're saying, we're better off without this guy even seeing the floor.
In exchange, they're getting a legitimate SG who will actually help them this season, and presumably next.
And, they're getting what we got when we sent out Dwight--flexibility. Can't easily trade a $25m contract. By comparison much easier to trade Plumlee's $12.5m, and if it came to that, Turner's $18m.
And they have no legit 3rd C on their roster right now, so there's that, for what that matters.
Somewhat obviously, I would have to agree that some degree of protection would probably be required to actually make the deal. (I didn't mess with levels of protection as I wrote this up.)
Last... I probably wouldn't have even bothered with that component to the package, except for the report that MEM has engaged ATL in talks about Parsons.
