Can Celtics trade for AD if they trade Kyrie

Post#1 » by clydewally » Mon Jan 28, 2019 6:16 pm

I understand that the Celtics can't get in on the KD trade talk till after the season because they have Kyrie. Could they participate if they traded Kyrie simultaneously?

Rose rule;
NBA teams are only allowed to have one player who signed a Rose Rule extension and are still on that contract {VIA TRADE}
So to legally get AD in a trade it has to be after Irving signs a new deal which is 7-1-19 at the earliest. The Celtics would have to offer a substantial better package in principal over other offers for the Pels to wait that long to trade Davis as none of the picks Boston owns in 2019 except maybe the Memphis pick if the Griz retain it this year would be on the table as the draft will have been over.
The way I see it N.O. has no incentive to wait and so the best Boston can hope for is N.O. gets a deal done with a team A.D. won't stay at.
Yes is the answer they can trade for A.D. if Irving is traded first or in the same deal.
But Davis camp has made it clear he wants no part of Boston without Irving on the roster

With all due respect, the claims that BOS can't outbid other teams for AD are silly. BOS can participate in such talks at any time, including now. They just couldn't pull the trigger until later.

As for NO waiting, of course they do not have to wait. But if the C's are able and willing to make a better offer for AD than what others are offering, why wouldn't the Pels wait to get the better deal? What if BOS is going to include Tatum and more? NO has no deadline forcing them to act now, and take LA junk instead, for example. Ingram, Ball, Kuzma, and Zubac get lots of attention for being in LA, but they are the core of a 30+ win team, not a winner (and perhaps the best player towards those 30+ wins is not even in the mix to be offered).

Could a team say "now or never" to dealing with NO on the Pels schedule? Sure. But this isn't likely to get serious until June, where everyone knows who is getting which 2019 pick, and where some pick restrictions for the future get released. If a team wants AD, where can they go to bid for a replacement if they walk away? It's not like there are any other AD's out there to get.

Yes, if they trade for AD and Kyrie goes the other way, that's legal. But as was already noted, that's not feasible, since AD wouldn't stay without Kyrie in the mix.
