I think we were watching two different games, because I thought that Culver looked horrible and got out played by Shayok. I posted this on the draft board that i'm not a fan of Culver and watching him tonight, it was so frustrating watching him shoot free throws and jack up alot of bad and selfish shots
Jan 17th

And your point is what? Everything i said was true, he had a horrible game and got jammed up alot in the lane, instead of going back out, passing or finding and setting a pick.

this is what i said about Culver...
atlantabbq99 wrote:I'm not a fan of the guy. He reminds me of Terrance Ross when he was in Washington. I like drafting elite shooters or elite defensive wing players and he is neither. He seems to be a good college player that does a little bit of everything well, but on the same level of shooting as Klay or same level of defense as Jimmy Butler, just in that in between level where not much happen.

The only positive thing I can say about the guy is that his PG skills seems to slightly above average, but I'm not sure if I would put him in the Brandon Roy category yet. This is one guy that I would really want to see his combine number first before thinking about drafting.

His athleticism is about where Ross was in college, but I'm now starting to think he is a worst shooter than Ross. I always said he was a good passer and had good PGs for a SG. I even said he could be a step below Brandon Roy.

Culver is a very average prospect. I don't know why lesser minds get offended when I don't buy into the hype of an average prospect.

One thing I'm finding difficult in viewing these college players is discerning between bad bbiq (of the player) vs bad coaching/system. Even at the highest levels (of NCAA coaches) it's not automatic that a bad result/play is because of something the player did wrong.

1. You asked the question.

2. I push back on the assertion. Everything I've read/heard on the kid portrays him as humble, selfless, devout, salt of the earth kind of kid.

3. If he's being overly aggressive for that TT team, it's because the coaching staff has pushed him to do so. He is the offensive catalyst on that team.

4. You literally asked the question.

If your best argument for a prospect is that they pray alot, you lost the argument even before it started.

And you apparently don't know how to read, because I never called him selfish or a bonehead.

Yes!!

This is why I'm so torn on RJ Barrett. I've read for years that he was being groomed as an aggressive, 1st-option-scorer capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone. But what we've seen this year at Duke is a ball dominant chucker. He needs more coaching. He needs a tighter leash. I fear Coach K has built a 1-and-done machine that is forced to allow these NBA bound freshmen a green light, regardless of inefficiencies, in a bid to keep the 5 star kids coming to play at Cameron Indoor.

But should I believe what I've seen for the last 3 months? Or go by what others have reported on the kid at every level for the last few years?

It's tough grading teenaged freshmen. The 2021 and 2022 drafts are gonna be rough...

But when's the last time you heard Zion or RJ or Morant talking about Bible Study in the locker room before a big game?

Above all, Texas Tech sophomore wing Jarrett Culver is a man of God. Culver defines himself by his faith and by his family. It’s the first thing you have to understand about him. He firmly believes that none of [his success] would be possible without the presence of God and those who raised him.

“It plays a big role,” Culver said. “Before games, I’m praying and reading my Bible. It’s a routine now. I feel like God is with me on the court, and he protects me. It’s big for me.”

If we want to know who Colonel Schlenk is picking with those 2 top 10s, somebody needs to create a chart with the highest combination of BBIQ meets shooting. That’s who he’s going for. Tough call in this draft, outside of the 1st 3 picks we might see some picks that seem to go higher than their pre-draft projection. Schkenk will pick smart shooters who can be coached up on D. Which 2 picks meet that criteria the most?

Honestly, I might be ready to trade out of this draft.

The Zionists will no doubt be horrified to read this, but from my position as an unemployed NBA scout (similar to my status as an NFL and MLB scout), there just isn't ANYONE who strikes me as this bonafide difference-maker that Schlenk acknowledges we have to find at some point in some draft.

One month to go. We'll see.

If Colonel Schlenk can somehow swing a late teens/early 20s 1st rounder in a trade, Jontay Porter seems very much like his kind of player. Not a freshman (still young), extremely high BBIQ, good handles, great passer, good shooter, good defender. Has good size (6’11) if he can get into shape (don’t give me body fat stats, see Draymond Green). The injury is a concern, but could take a flier on a 3rd 1st-rounder. Hawks future C?

100% agree.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Travis trade back with the Celtics to acquire multiple picks in the teens and snag Johntay specifically.

My top 13 on my personal big board Jan 30th 2019

For me, from 6-25, they are all similar in terms of overall to me. Just the ones I like the most potentially is higher on my board. To me, this class is much better than the 2016 class but that class was known for having a strong top 7 with Chriss being the one with the massive untapped potential and being the 8th guy. This class is much much much deeper. The issue with this class is #1 is as good or better than any class ever but #2 would have been fighting for #7 pick with Wendell Carter Jr. last year. Ja is a similar prospect for me to Trae and that could be much better than you expect long term while going through the struggles, short term. I actually like Ja more than Trae as a prospect, just a tad, personal preference. Honestly, I can't rate Cam or Jarrett in the same class with Mikal Bridges which was slightly higher than WCJ or Trae although I like Cam and Jarrett more than Knox as a prospect.

After that, it's like last year's draft for me. SGA and Garland are similar rated prospects in my tier system. 6-25 range equals the SGA and 13-22 range of last year. It's all about who you like the most. This isn't a weak draft at all. A lot of 3/D guys, a lot of guys with the size or athletic ability. A lot of two way potential guys with some BBIQ as well. But the superstar quality is extremely low in this class. It's literally, get a top 3 pick or SOL and truthfully, get Zion is you really only option. This is a great draft to have a mid or mid late 1st. Maybe not as much for a lottery pick. That said, I personally rated the guys I liked the most after 5.

I like K.Z., I think he could be a star long term. I see a potentially better Tobias Harris long term. I really like Jaxson Hayes, he is raw but smart, freaky fast twitchy but not skilled, high motor but not a scorer. Has a great bounce, great shooting form and shows a lot of potential with his shot long term. He is a strange prospect. - rebounder for position and doesn't have active hands in the passing lane but covers ground at an elite level, a tremendous shot blocker and already a tremendous team and PnR defender. Good frame. He has room for grow due to his broad shoulders. I like kids with NFL and West African dads, they usually have broad shoulders and are able to quickly add weight.

Read on Twitter

Rui is high on my personal list because he is one of the few guys that just translates for me. Combo forwards who can defend and switch, play on and off the ball, can dribble, can shoot and pass are in vogue in the modern NBA. It's hard to pass on him. Tobias Harris is about to be a max contract. These guys are the wave. Garland like SGA aren't going to set the NBA on fire but they translate and will help you ASAP. For both players, it's their ceiling but I am fond of their floor. I think both will land between All Star and good PG. A tad higher than prime Jeff Teague range.

Hunter is my favorite. 3/D, translates, can defend multiple positions, can pass. If he had more upside for me, I would have him with Mikal Bridges. I personally think he is a lot like a smaller Danilo Gallinari. He is a lot more skilled than he gets credit for and he is such all a plus in every area but he isn't a 1-3 option. In fact, like DMC, he is a #4 to #5 option on offense. NAW for me is a rich man's Arron Affalo. He has all of what Arron has but a much better shooter and maybe scorer. I can see in the right system, him becoming a potential All Star. I know some who think he is another Jamal Murray. It's possible, he is such an efficient scorer.

I am not as high on Langford, I think he is as talented as anyone in my 6-25 if not more talented. But talent isn't everything. I don't think he is athletic enough to get to the rack in the NBA for his first couple years and doesn't shoot the ball well enough to keep the defense honest. I think he will struggle honestly. But he is as talented as anyone in this draft after Ja, R.J. and Zion. Little has a lot of talent but I don't really know what he does at a NBA level. The potential to be a star is there with him but he is so far from it and it's unlikely he gets there. My Stanley Johnson of the class. I loved Johnson as a prospect. I focused on his star potential and less on his rawness and he doesn't do anything to get on the court at this stage at the next level. For prospects like these, they pray to go to Boston, San Antonio, Brooklyn, etc. Most teams will make them busts. Simple as that.

That's my personal 13 for now. It will consistently change. Guys move up and down.

If Hawks land in top 3 but miss out on the Zion sweepstakes, I think they probably bite on RJ with the thought of coaching him up. Then take the best of Cam, Rui, KZ, Culver, Little, Hayes, Fernando with the Dallas pick. Hopefully execute a trade (Prince?) for a late teens/early 20s and take a flier on Johntay Porter. If Schlenk walks away from this draft with RJ, Culver, and Porter in the first round, damn son...

2019 NBA Draft Prospects with Real All-Star Potential

RJ Barrett (Duke, SG, Freshman)

Image

From high school, All-Star showcase events and FIBA play to Duke, RJ Barrett's scoring has translated in every setting. The NBA should be next.

He's averaging 23.9 points with assuring consistency, having only finished below 20 points three times all season.

At 6'7", Barrett has strong positional size and athleticism for either wing position. He leads the country in field goals made in transition, where he's at his best using hesitations, body control and burst to weave and finish through retreating defenses.

In the half court, he scores in every way imaginable, often by improvisation. He's also knocking down two three-pointers per game and 42.6 percent of his pull-ups, encouraging numbers regarding his shot-making potential.

And despite taking some heat earlier in the season for his tendency to hunt for shots, he is averaging 3.9 assists. All eight of Barrett's ball-screen passes to the roll man have been converted into baskets.

He's close to being a top-three lock in this draft, capable of giving a franchise an offensive weapon to feature and build around.

I haven't really watched any Porter film since the last draft. I actually have him off my board for now. We will see, I want to know his status on the injury during the combine and workouts. The talent is there but like we talked about the draft board. His family history with knee injuries is massive.

1. Zion
Major Gap
2t. R.J.
2t. Ja
Gap
4. Cam Fam
5. Jarrett Culver
Slight Gap
6. K.Z. Okpala
7. Jaxson Hayes
8. Rui
9. Darius Garland
10. DeAndre Hunter
11. Nickeil Alexander-Walker
12. Romeo Langford
13. Nassir Little

Hunter is climbing for me. I initially didn’t love him but he’s growing on me a bit but 10 sounds right. I’m still not loving Jaxson Hayes besides his hands. Also no matter how much you dislike Keldon you gotta put him in the top 13 imo. Nice list!

As much as I love J Culver, Nickeil Alexander-Walker seems to offer similar skill set and production and will likely be available outside the top-10. He's the cousin of Shai in LAC. And I think that's a fair caliber of player to compare him too. An above average starter, but not quite a star.
