I think Prince doesn't fit due to age/timeline and all that but agree our "core" is probably fluid at this point.

Here's why.
On the con side, yes, they're adding some salary. And one of those salaries is Plumlee's.
On the pro side, this is effectively a Melo situation in MEM. They're reportedly talking to ATL because they're looking for some way to climb out from under the remaining two years of a big lump contract that is even slightly larger than the Dwight Howard one we sent away. I mean, they're not even playing Parsons right now. Effectively, they're saying, we're better off without this guy even seeing the floor.
In exchange, they're getting a legitimate SG who will actually help them this season, and presumably next.
And, they're getting what we got when we sent out Dwight--flexibility. Can't easily trade a $25m contract. By comparison much easier to trade Plumlee's $12.5m, and if it came to that, Turner's $18m.
And they have no legit 3rd C on their roster right now, so there's that, for what that matters.
Somewhat obviously, I would have to agree that some degree of protection would probably be required to actually make the deal. (I didn't mess with levels of protection as I wrote this up.)
Last... I probably wouldn't have even bothered with that component to the package, except for the report that MEM has engaged ATL in talks about Parsons.
If Memphis is giving up that 2020 first I think they would expect to be getting expirings, not an overpaid 6th man and a 3rd string un-playable center. While I get that they are getting smaller contracts they can move, I don't see them being able to do that this year.
And I doubt Atlanta would be willing to pay parsons what it would cost to buy him out this season. he is due to make $49 million (this and next season). You know he isn't going to take a huge cut from that.
I don't know what other offers they have on the table or who else they might be dealing with, but I figure THAT is the measure of comparison, as opposed to what "they would expect." So, if they have a better option, sure... take that one. I'm not sure there is one, but maybe there is.
And/but based on what we know, the alternative for now is $24m and $25m being paid for absolutely nothing.
To me, if this was a serious conversation between the GMs, the principals of the deal here are reasonable, and it then comes down to the pick protection.
To your other point, ATL comes out of the deal responsible for $1m more overall payroll than what they're starting with... so no big deal even if they wouldn't get to slice off some salary from Parsons' side.
I'd missed this, at least the Plumlee part. From a few days ago, fwiw.

My guess would be a top 5 protected Memphis pick in 2021. Similar to the Dallas pick protections.

Kings deal: Not a big fan. Jackson is okay as a backup wing option, but does he have a spot on this team as a future player?
Magic deal: Yuck yuck yuck. Eating Mozgov's huge deal for a lottery protected 2019 first? No thanks. Not only that but does Lin push them into the playoffs? I doubt that as well. So unless that pick has some serious reduced protections in 2020 that also seems like a no-go.
Pistons deal: It is better than the Magic deal because of the salary returning to us. Still would much prefer a future for eating 2020 $.

What if the Magic or Pistons deal were for 2020 or 2021 lottery protected FRPs. Those seem like possible deals to me.

Reports are that Philly has inquired on Dedmon. I'd love the opportunity to get Fultz and try to rehab him. He certainly has potential, and is in desperate need of a sports psychologist (something that famously helped turn John Smolz's career around with the Braves), but it could be a nice low risk/high reward move.

I definitely agree with the theory of low risk high reward but I’m also weary and hesitant on Fultz weak mentality. I’d argue Smoltz is a different case. He had already established himself, Fultz hasn’t done anything.

Ah yes... first the Plumlee / Parsons scenario, and now the Dedmon / Fultz component... the Hawks "Megatrade of 2019" might yet not be the pipe dream previously even I myself had assumed

Fultz can't shoot. It's not mental. The boy can't shoot.

He has a disease. I'll pass at this price. I'll rather two future high 2nd rounders.

I don't think he's a lost cause. While I don't bank on getting #1 overall value from him, when Fultz has played he hasn't looked completely lost on the court. His shooting can only get better from herr, maybe in Atlanta he'll be able to put it all together. Without being in the spotlight, I think he can focus on being the best version of himself instead of the #1 overall pick. I'd take the chance for a year, he'd be a cheaper backup than Lin next year, and he could be a longer term option behind Trae.King Ken wrote:personanongrata wrote:Fultz can't shoot. It's not mental. Shot well in hs and college.
I think the mental piece is real. However, i also think he had something weird happen in addition to that but is trying to hide it. It's also been said he has questionable advisors so its a mess all around.
Risk with a capital R.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
I realize I'm a little late for the party:

Bleacher ReportNBA Trade Rumors: Markelle Fultz Needed for 76ers to Acquire Dewayne Dedmon
From a money perspective, a trade of Fultz for Dedmon and Prince would work.
The question is whether either team would agree to it.
The Sixers may be disinclined to give up a former No. 1 overall pick for two role players, however much those two players would bolster their bench. While Fultz's early career has been sidetracked in the most bizarre fashion imaginable—as either injuries, the yips or some combination of the two have caused Fultz to lose the jump shot he displayed in college—he still has massive potential and could yet develop into a star. Giving up on him so soon is a risk.
He's currently sidelined with thoracic outlet syndrome and his timetable to return to the court remains unclear.
The Hawks, meanwhile, can afford to take on a project like Fultz since they are still in the early stages of a rebuild. But there are concerns that Fultz may never rediscover his shot, and given that his ideal position is point guard, his fit with Trae Young would be questionable.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
So, this guy is wondering if the Sixers would trade Dedmon AND Prince???
Whoa.
How much do they pay these guys to write this stuff?
Must've been a pay cut somewhere along the way, because this is one of the more irrational crapola hallucinations I've seen published.
No. Prince is not in that deal. That's crazy talk.
Dedmon brings them value for their playoff run, in exchange for a big, big question mark health-wise, and from a Philly perspective, a drag on the morale in the locker room.
Dedmon for Fultz makes a LOT of sense for both sides.
