I hate that Jeff and hawksfanatic are left to figure out the calculus without an insider around here to confirm anything.

I should've known this was too good to be true! I guess we all should be really concerned about them attempting to tank this season so they can have their cake and eat it too. It may be too late for that now though with them at 23 wins.

WonderBoy is gonna heroball them to 30, plus Memphis+Orlando's starting to look like a firewall, so Not-Bottom-5 is looking pretty good atm.

No way they just incinerate the top 5 protection just like that, but I think it'll be a moot point since there's no way I see that pick finishing top 5 without some lotto luck.

At first glance, it seems like the Knicks got fleeced. Fwiw I still have no idea why they just straight traded Porzingis right now without at least waiting for the deadline. They're completely gambling on those two max FA slots, and if they strike out it may get ugly.

Dallas is also taking a big gamble. Porzingis is opting into the qualifying offer next season, making him an unrestricted free agent in 2020. If he bolts from Dallas, then that roster will consist of Luka and not much else. With that 2021 pick being unprotected, we could see a mini-Brooklyn situation, and possibly a disgruntled Luka.

As for us, I think this enhances that Mavs pick this year. That team arguably got worse in the short run and may begin sinking against a Western schedule if Porzingis doesn't come back and gels quickly. I'd say that pick finishes top 8, if not top 7 after this. Then, we'll have to hope for some lotto luck.

Hmmmm, worries of a Mavs' slide and/or Cuban pivot. Seems like I remember someone discussing that recently, might've even seen a thread about it being a good thing the Hawks were firmly planted at 5th worst and looking like they're trying to stay there in case they have to set a hard screen. Crazy

I really don't have much to add except if the Mavs start sitting Doncic regularly, I really hope they actually get penalized for that. It might well take even more than that. If they don't, then IMO, they win at least 10 more games.

There's probably going to be a lot more sweating though now.

What a double standard this is...The Hawks probably sit more players than anyone in the league over minor stuff!

No way they intentionally tank.

They are too far ahead in wins and the top 5 slot is way too competitive at this point.

Also KP wanting out of a tanking organization is the reason they got him in the first place and that would give him a very bad first impression. Plus you don't want to irritate Luka and potentially ruin his chance at winning ROY.

Way too much potential damage for a very small chance at keeping their pick.

The screen will be set as your other thread indicated. Hard screen by us no doubt.

Looks like Detroit is gonna get this one. It shouldn't be this close though.

I get what you have been saying; but the really good thing is there are about to be eight teams tanking who have worse or a equal record to them. With a thirty something percent chance I would be afraid them sitting at 6th. As far ahead as they are, I don't think Dallas will even get there.

7th, 8th, or 9th slot will be their odds to move up in my opinion.

I'm under the impression if the Mavs get their top 5 pick it goes to the Knicks?

I think the Mavs probably keep it because if the wordage of the trade contract is being held up to make us not get the pick unprotected. Then it should also hold up in saying the Knicks won't get the pick until we get ours like is stated in the contract itself. So realistically by the way they worded it they shouldn't be allowed to touch a 1st round mavs pick until we have gotten ours 1st. If they wanted to make it fair they should make ours unprotected at this point and then that would guarantee the knicks will get theirs in the next 2 years.

They have to get a extra pick. NBA rules do not allow a team to give up two consecutive #1 picks. Now if they pick up one in this years draft or next, I think they could give the Knicks their top five if that is where they end up. Then we end up with the Mavs pick for the following season.

They key is the Mavs have to have three #1 picks in the next two years to be able to give up two of them.
