Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
So with the specific years of 2021 and 2023 picks to be conveyed, that's the earliest the Knicks can retrieve those assets. Dallas will either keep their 2019 pick or convey it to us.
It's clear, there's no incentive for them other than to tank this season, and they need that 2019 pick badly. Going to be pick 6-7 or bust for us.

and in case anyone was wondering, the projects on the Mavs 1st we own are as follows.
2019: 1-5 protected
2020: 1-5 proected
2021: 1-3 protected
2022: 1-3 protected
2023: unprotected
Each year the Mavs don't convey our pick, the Knicks ones also would get bumped back a year.

Is that true? Man that's ridiculous for NYK. They have fully put all their eggs and their chickens in the free agency basket. The problem, for them, is it's inconceivable that Durant has made up his mind right now. I'm sure they've spoken to Durant (via back channels) but I don't think it's a done-deal.
That means, imho, this is a blind swing by NYK. That tells me that the way this is gonna end up is with Knicks' brass trying to convince folks the "value" was in shedding salary and acquiring the great DSJr.

It has to be so due to the Ted Stepien Rule. If the Mavs can't trade back to back firsts, they can't give up 2021 and 2023 if they owe us 2020.

There's probably going to be a lot more sweating though now.
No way they intentionally tank.
They are too far ahead in wins and the top 5 slot is way too competitive at this point.
Also KP wanting out of a tanking organization is the reason they got him in the first place and that would give him a very bad first impression. Plus you don't want to irritate Luka and potentially ruin his chance at winning ROY.
Way too much potential damage for a very small chance at keeping their pick.
The dynamic with KP should be a positive factor for us. He has already said he is keeping a qualifying off on the table which would be terrifying for Dallas however unlikely it actually is. Hopefully they don't want to show him half a season of losses and dysfunction.

Yeah - there is no way for them to convey a pick to the Knicks during that time without picking up an extra one to convey or keep. (For example, if their pick is top 5 this year and therefore doesn't convey they would have to trade for a first round pick in 2021 in order to give one to the Knicks because otherwise they would always be at risk of conveying two consecutive years).

Which explains why there were reports yesterday that they were looking to acquire another first sometime soon to those picks would move out then.

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
I have no idea what Dallas' intentions are with the Porzingis trade, but I actually think they can now make a run at a playoff spot.
THJ and Doncic make a much more compatible duo on the wings as Hardaway can play off ball much better than DSJ. And if Kristaps is indeed capable of coming back in February at some point, they could make some noise and get back to .500 on the season.

Update:
The AthleticAccording to a team source, the Mavericks will retain the top-five protection on that 2019 pick owed to Atlanta. If they land in the top five, then it likely means that the picks that convey to New York would be pushed back to 2022 and 2024, leaving room for Atlanta to land Dallas’ 2020 selection. It’s awfully complicated, but if you can only take one thing away: yes, Dallas could still tank this season and land a top-four pick — even the top overall selection and Zion Williamson — with some lottery luck.

PRECISELY why Schlenk has the Hawks safely hovering comfortably cushioned in 5th worst. Let Dallas try to dive to 5th worst record and watch what happens. I’ve been telling y’all

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
As of today, there are 10 teams with a record worse than Dallas. When it is all said and done, I don’t see them being worse than the bottom 4 or us. I also think they finish with a better record than Memphis, Orlando, New Orleans, and maybe Detroit. I know Detroit just beat them, but there was no Doncic and I’m guessing they start “resting” Drummond/Griffin once they realize they aren’t getting the 8th seed over a bad Hornets team. I think the 7-10 range is still a safe bet for them. After that, it’s just lottery luck.
For the talk of them improving and making the playoffs, I don’t see that at all. The last two spots will come down to the Clippers, Lakers, Jazz, Kings, and maybe the Wolves. With LeBron back I see the Lakers getting one and Utah probably getting the other.

KEY words. Hawks (5th worst) are only 6.5 games behind Mavs. KP doesn’t play and Luka sIts here and there and watch that rapidly change. Good thing Hawks are in perfect position to block.

Not just the Mavs, I think a lot of these teams between 5-9th worst will start sitting/trading guys. You will also see teams contending for the playoffs start to amp up their focus and play. The games against the bad teams will have more of a must-win feel for the ones battling for a spot or positioning. The new lottery odds have me nervous regardless of where they wind up though.

There probably won't be a better chance to cement not only the Hawk's draft position by maximizing the trade deadline, but if Travis does this the right way, the talent coming back over the next two years should have Atlanta sitting pretty. I like Schlenk's drafts for the most part, but the trading thing is TBD.

Helpful keeping the Mavs pick, hurtful for the position of our own. I don’t think Hawks would blantantly try to out-tank other teams for the top 5, only block Mavs from it if pick was threatened. Schlenk didn’t trade Luka to not end up with that 2nd pick and would defend it.

Re: Mavs & Cavs Draft Pick Watch
My heart will be pounding out of its chest on lottery announcement day because of that Mavs pick. If they finish with around the 7th-8th worst record (my prediction fwiw), and luck into a top 3 pick, that pick in 2020 will be much worse with Luka, Porzingis, (Zion?) and whoever they can attract in free agency. We're expecting that Mavs pick to be a given this year but if it isn't then this rebuild could have another year added to it (especially if we aren't fortunate with our point in the lottery).
Just thinking about this year's lottery stresses me out.

They should just apply the new lott rules to the whole thing. At the end of the season the lott not only determines draft order, but also PO seedings.
Ping pong balls say:
CLEV is top PO seed and GSW get top pick

I’ve always said that knee and back injuries should be taken seriously, ankle, foot and wrist injuries are not a big deal. Medical science always gets better every ten years. So coming back from a knee injury is a lot better but if Kristap? What if the Knicks know something we don’t know or there belief is not 100% and there is a Brandon Roy situation?
