What is the apprehension to Vučević inking a five year deal (over four years)?

He is only 28, and thus, five years takes him to 33. His game is not based on athleticism, and a five year deal really is not beyond his peak years.

Thoughts?

You are surely aware that, if the intention is to have him retire here, signing him to four year deal would mean that fifth year could be negotiated for veteran's minimum instead? And that no other competing team in offseason is capable of offering such contract?

This FO would get BLASTED if they re signed Vuc to a 5 year deal without trading Bamba before. At that point we then just wasted a big pick on Bamba.

No reason to do that. If we do resign Nikola here, it will be to trade him.

If you’re ready/have the thoughts to trade him in the future you trade him now and get assets.

Imagine if he signs a 4 year 80+M deal and turns into the old Vuc. That contract is then an overpay not moveable without a 1st. On top of that you’ve probably pissed off Bamba in the process and killed his development.

If it's declining contract, it is tradeable. I'm all for trading him now, because:
a) I don't think we will be able to resign him in the first place
b) we might find ourselves in pickle when team (say NY) strikes out on big free agents and turns to Vučević offering much worse contract than that above.

Edit: Oh, and Bamba can kick rocks. He's nowhere near ready to assume starting role and should be focusing on improving both physically and skillswise.

Exactly.

This would not only slap Bamba directly in the face and lower his confidence, but subquentially will drop Bambas value substantially.

If the pure intentions to resigning Vucevic means to only trade him later than why not sign him to a shorter declining more trade friendly contract?

Because Nikola will not sign that kind of a deal. I see three possible options happening:
1) deal him now
2) let him walk in FA
3) resign him on a contract we'll have trouble trading later

Yea comparing apples to oranges.

Vucevic has improved and changed his game specifically to fit today’s modern era big.

All I read from his post is that Clifford is actually a good coach and gets the best out of his players. Thanks for reassuring an observation I already had.

not really what i meant.

in the case of Al jefferson and Vooch both teams decided to go all in as a playoff team with them as their central players. They ended up having what, 2 seasons of a playoff berth and thats it? at least charlotte had kemba. beyond vooch who do we have? The path we are headed may end up the same unless we get lucky

Ignoring that a 5 year, 110M contract would be easily tradeble if Bamba became a starting-quality C, the rookie's contract is in itself a very good deal for a primary backup.

So I can agree with your narrative.

"Old Vučević" is worth 20M a year.

Is this what happened when Gortat played behind Howard?

Having a solid bench is key to winning games. Next year, Bamba is probably not yet a starting capable C, but he could be a super-6th.

I am amazed by how much "Magic fans" undervalue Vučević's worth.

What kind of stats do you think he will be putting up at 33? How will we be using him then? There's no way to know, but chances are we will catch up to the league and have more potent scorers by then. This is a guard league and his role will diminish, and we couldn't move Vuc on his team friendly deal that he has now and we had been trying to trade him for years. Many things can happen in 5 years. Hell we are on coach #5, and changed FO personnel and chances are high it will not be like it is now. It just isn't smart to give the 5th year. You probably were one of the gazillion who argued that Rashard should not have gotten it and we bid against ourselves. Well we do not need to do that again, even if we really appreciate his hard work. I actually wouldn't mind the 4/80 just because he has been underpaid for years and he should definitely be making more that Evan, but that's just emotional take and i am against a 5 year deal because i do not think it's good for the organization.

Many here are on this number, but I cannot see the Magic organisation low-balling a contact number to 80M. On a 4-year deal, I really think this is 100M.

3 years $70M would be fair deal for both sides. That's $23M per year, highest payed player, still not that bad deal for a team. After two years Bamba should be good enough to shop Vuc.

Bamba plays 13-19 mpg nowdays and can't stay healthy, i pretty sure high min season would end up Porzingis scenario next year, with him getting some nasty injury. (Fatigue factor increeses chance for all injuries and Bamba doesn't have energy for 22-24 mpg let alone anything more right now ).

Go post that on Dallas and NY board and let me know if they are eager to accommodate. You have no evidence that the market would offer more. If they do, like i said he should take the money.
